Maybe we could plan something with advanced notice and you could leave work early and meet up between 5-6 on a friday?

Quote from: Tiger Heart on October 16, 2009, 10:23:38 PMWhy does the story keep repeating about how Redlands was unlucky by having a penalty on their "game winning touchdown"?  Stop making excuses to build up sentiment for Redlands.  They LOST that game because the TIGERS BEAT them.

Welcome to the board, Tiger Heart. You obviously haven't been around long enough to know that Redlands has never lost a football game because the other team beat them. Redlands always has some flimsy excuse, lame explanation, or feeble reasons why they lost. Their never-ending arrogance and trademark hubris won't let them admit that they got beat by a better team, so instead they let the excuses fly. Heck, I got an earful of it on the field after the game last Saturday. I walked over to a Redlands player whose name I won't mention to tell him good game, how much I have enjoyed watching him play, and to wish him good luck down the road. His dad was standing there and he launched into a tirade about how Oxy fixed the game and has the refs in their hip pocket, especially when they play Redlands at Oxy. I was taken aback and stared at the guy while he sputtered and ranted away. Finally I had heard enough, so I turned and walked away. As I did the guy called after me, "Don't fear the truth!" Well, pal, there are two immutable truths from that game -- 27-24 and 6 straight, baby!

Yep...six straight and that's the reality Redlands current players, fans, and alumni have to deal with. Games are won on the field and idiot parents don't help and trust me I saw plenty of them during my four years in the program.

Slow week in the SCIAC, but predictions nonetheless:

Chapman @ Oxy:  This game has given Oxy fits recently.  Chapman blew an early lead last year in a close one, and Oxy had to beat the Panthers in overtime at their own homecoming in '07.  Unfortunately for Chapman, almost none of the starters that actually played those games return this year.  The beating they took from Whittier doesn't bode well for this game.  38-14 Oxy

CMS @ Cal-LU:  This one was close last year, but from the video I saw it looked like a fluke.  CMS doesn't have the offensive firepower to stay in this one for long.  34-14  CLU

La Verne @ Pomona-Pitzer: I think this one could go either way.  Pomona's offense has been a lot less potent than I thought they would be, and La Verne played Whitworth, CMS, and even Redlands fairly close.  I'll go with P-P b/c of the home field advantage.  By that I mean that historically they have so few people at their games that the silence is actually a distraction to the other teams.  28-21 P-P

Whittier @ Redlands  Whittier showing some positive signs last week is encouraging for the SCIAC, but bad timing this week running into the Bulldogs.  If the dogs have some character on their team to come back from the devastating loss last week, which I think they do, this should be a route.  38-14 UR

*BONUS* Let me be the first to petition both the Oxy and Chapman coaches to play brothers Kyle and Zach Kazarian against each other at some point in the game.  Senior Kyle is Oxy's #2 QB, and saw action in this game last year.  Soph QB Zach doesn't have a pass attempt on the year however, so that might be too much to ask for.**

Nihon Tiger

Sorry to hear about that OB.  You could hear some of the Redlands fans whining on the broadcast about the penalty calls.  I think the worst was after the blatant late hit on our WR Deussen, I heard a fan say, "Why don't you just give them the TD!"  So bad it's funny.  It's always unfortunate to hear parents or players blame referees for a loss, since it doesn't help the player or the team to do so.

That being said, I will admit that SCIAC refs are pretty dodgy sometimes.  Specifically a game I played at Pomona two years ago, where the referee was actually threatening players.  As in shouting, "Hey, number 8, I'm watching you!  You'd better not do anything!"  to our QB during his cadence.  Ridiculously unprofessional.

Memo to Oxy: Try covering #82 Dan Delahoussaye this time. He only had 6 catches for 190 yards and 3 TDs last year.

Why does the story keep repeating about how Redlands was unlucky by having a penalty on their "game winning touchdown"?

Because the way in which they lost is key to understanding their mind-set, which is only what the entire column is about.

Tiger Heart . . .

Welcome to the board . . . nice opening post . . . spot on . . . but you do realize it was "Tiger Heart" that let Oxy nab the win right? Don't begrudge Redlands the press . . . what we have to focus on is winning out, hoping that the SCIAC gets two bids . . . and the NWC does as well so we don't have to open in a SCIAC v. SCIAC first rounder!
You wanna bet.  A double win for the NCAA bean counters.  This actual helps the chances of two teams from these conferences. ::)

Nihon-
I was at the game and saw that hit. What happened was the Oxy player caught the ball and landed awkwardly. By awkwardly I mean he sprung up quickly as though his knees did not hit the ground. The referee however, failed to blow the whistle. So as a player, I've been taught to play until the whistle blows. I agree that the OXY player was most likely down, however it is the referees responsibility to blow the whistle and call the play dead. It seems to me that a lot of SCIAC refs do not understand that players react to the whistle and therefore they need to be on top of blowing the damn thing. The referee didn't blow the whistle until after the Redlands player tackled the OXY WR. I would think the ref would realize he didn't blow the whistle soon enough and would not throw a flag because of it. Instead the flag gave Oxy a 1st and 10 on the 5 or less yard line for the go ahead touchdown. It was a big play in the final quarter of the game.

And whats with all the hatred on the boards? I thought we were civilized in this conference? lol
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.

Being a Dad of a Senior Redlands player, it was very hard to lose the game last week.  But, Oxy was the better team in the end,  as much as I hate to say it.  The good news, is that Redlands beat themselves.  We owned OXY,  but let them back in.  Kudo's to the OXY players, coaches.  I tried to pull into the lot to tailgate before the game, but some dude closed the gate on us redlands people.  My 13 year old daughter was tripped by a 20 something year old girl wearing an OXY sweatshirt when she walked to the bathroom and berated.  Im not going to say ALL oxy fans suck because of these reasons like some others might say.

We'll be tailgating in the parking lot at Redlands Tomorrow.  WE wont close the GATE on any Whittier fans.  If there are any Whittier parents or fans that would like to tailgate with us and meet/talk/eat you are most certainly welcome.  If you bring something to BBQ I'll cook it up.  You are most welcome.  Some posers, I mean posters want to hang a whole program, players, coaches, the parents and everyone else associated with the programs.  Most of you losers that do this were never players and my opinion only are nothing more than sad, lonely people that have been wasting oxygen since the day you were born.  Someone that has BEEN THERE and DONE THAT wouldn't stoop that low.  I hope there are no injuries on ANY Teams tomorrow.  Go Bulldogs'

Baloney. Deussen caught the ball, he put his knee down, and Aiello came from 3 or 4 yards away and hit him. He didn't "spr(i)ng up quickly as though his knees did not hit the ground." It was a blatant penalty. Not even close.

I saw the OXY receiver land on his knees untouched and the Bulldog had momentum and whacked him. Receiver could have gotten up.

Did not see the play in question . . . but it's my understanding that a player is down in college when his knee hits the ground . . . contact is not required like in the NFL.  So while not the model of clarity, it appears that the ball is considered dead when the ref blows it up OR when the players body (other than hand or foot) hits the ground.  Thus, if the receivers knee hit the ground, the play was dead and the penalty appears to have been justified, as described.  If his knee did not touch the ground and no whistle, then it was live.

"Live Ball Becomes Dead
ARTICLE 2. a. A live ball becomes a dead ball as provided in the rules or
when an official sounds his whistle (even though inadvertently) or otherwise
signals the ball dead (Rule 3-2-2-i) (A.R. 4-2-1-II and A.R. 4-2-4-I)."

ARTICLE 3. A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle
or declare it dead:
. . . .
b. When any part of the ball carrier's body, except his hand or foot, touches
the ground or when the ball carrier is tackled or otherwise falls and loses
possession of the ball as he contacts the ground with any part of his
body, except his hand or foot. (Exception: The ball remains alive when
an offensive player has simulated a kick or is in position to kick the ball
held for a place kick by a teammate. The ball may be kicked, passed or
advanced by rule) (A.R. 4-1-3-I).

With all due respect IrishDog:

1.  Have you been here long enough to know who have been players and who have not?
2.  Are you suggesting that those who have been players are always the modicum of class and respect?
