In college, if your knee is down, you are down.  Deussen caught the ball, slipped, and was down.  He made no motion to rise, in fact he even put his hand and head down, disappointed that he'd slipped.  Aiello was 3-4 yards away, and easily had time to stop or avoid him.  Instead he visibly loaded up and took a free shot.  The refs called it correctly, and the announcers both immediately called for a flag before it was even thrown and said "how can anyone boo this call?" so I'm obviously not alone in my opinion.  One of the announcers is even a Redlands grad, for pete's sake.  The play is at 2hours, 13minutes and everyone can watch it as many times as they need to see what happened.

Anyways the call itself wasn't even the point of my post, nor was badmouthing Redlands fans specifically.  I simply intended to say that I find it unfortunate when fans, players, or alumni of any team make excuses about reffing, because it doesn't allow the players to take responsibility for their actions on the field, and taking responsibility for one's actions is an important quality in the character of any man.  I think learning to deal with what happens in intense competition with class is a big part of the point of why we play sports in the first place, especially in division III.

Good luck to everyone today.

Agreed guys.

How about advancing a blocked PAT? OXY tried on the first Redlands TD. They're all college boys in the heat of the fight.

YOu can advance a blocked PAT and you get 2 Pts. if you make it the endzone...if you don't you just get pounded :)

Oxy always plays hard and consistent, and for the most part play with a lot of class - I think everyone knows that by now.

As far as heart goes, its tough to whomp the #12 ranked team in the nation at their place 43-25 without heart, I bet you rememebr that.

Looking forward to a good time at the Lu this afternoon for a big Homecoming win. I would challenge any tailgate in the conference with the parents of CLU this year, they go big!

Thanks for the video, I thought he was getting up but obviously the video proves he didn't. However the ref. was still late in blowing that whistle, which is really my beef. I have seen it happen on the field as a player and as a fan. Real shame when the ref. isn't sure if the play is dead or not.
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.

There was another play when the ref didn't know whether there had been an interception or not.  One of his assistants finally made the call. :(

I'll be curious to hear thoughts on the CMS-CLU game---much closer than people were predicting with CLU scoring the winning TD late in the 4th and CMS matching them pretty well statistically...  Is CLU not as good as they seemed earlier?  Is CMS better than people thought?  ???

poetry in motion

Poets(Mean Machine) are getting a spanking tonight by a pissed off Redlands team with a point to make to the rest of the SCIAC conference and D3 football teams. Whittiers starting QB our only hope to make plays on offense must be injured. Back to last years painful moments to watch. Where's Paul Crue (longest yard fame) when we need him?

Jack Parkman

I believe there was a post oa while back about Caron padding his sons stats at Pomona.  I hope he is happy for the last touchdown tonight.  Use your head coach!  There is no reason to throw the ball up 17 points with 1:19 to play.  Pathetic.

Eyewitness report from Eagle Rock:

Oxy 20, Chapman 14

Beautiful, clear, warm night at Oxy. The Tigers did just enough to beat the Panthers.

Yesterday I mentioned:

Memo to Oxy: Try covering #82 Dan Delahoussaye this time. He only had 6 catches for 190 yards and 3 TDs last year.

Oxy got a break right off. On the first play of the game, Eric Willcockson went long to Delahoussaye for a TD but the play was called back for illegal procedure. Oxy scored first on a 22-yard FG by Neil Martin. Chapman came back on a 28-yard pass from Willcockson to Delahoussaye. Jim Hildensperger blocked the extra point try, and Nick Saraceni picked up and ran it back for 2 points and it was 6-5. Scott Saunders hit Jordan Washington on a 42-yard TD pass play featuring some nifty-shifty moves by Washington, and the quarter ended with Oxy up 12-6.

In the second quarter, Oxy had a chance to extend the lead, but Jason Haller fumbled going in and Chapman recovered. Oxy led 12-6 at the half.  No scoring in the third quarter. The Tigers finally broke through with about 6:30 to go on a short run by Haller, got 2 on a pass from Saunders to Washington, and it was 20-6. But the lead didn't last long because Kevin Krail ran the kickoff back 91 yards and CU converted a 2-point PAT and it was 20-14. That's how it ended.

Both teams operated most of the night in fits and starts. The Panthers have two excellent receivers in Delahoussaye (9 catches for 91 yards) and Chris Langstaff (7 catches for 101 yards), but Chapman just wasn't able to sustain its attack. For Oxy, Saunders threw for 310 yards, Jason Jordan Inabnit had 7 catches for 141 yards including a 71-yarder, Chris Washington had 168 all-purpose yards, and Haller rushed for 113 net yards on 24 carries. If you like punting, this game was for you. Chapman punted 8 times and Oxy 7 times. Oxy's Alex Groh, the Pablo Picasso of Punting, showed his artistry by killing 4 punts inside the 20, and booming three others.

Oxy is now 4-1 and faces La Verne next week. Chapman is 2-3 and hosts Cal Lutheran next Saturday.

Owing to the complaints of Redlands fans, pregame activities were awesome. Security took down the barriers in the lower parking lot, and Oxy and Chapman partied in a festival-like atmosphere. It was a veritable UN as Panther and Tiger fans sang each others' fight songs and gave everyone hearty pats on the back. As usual, I showed up and ate everyone's food. Just call me SpongeBob.

Tiger Heart

Congrats to SCIAC Player of the week Scott Saunders and the Tigers on another well deserved win.  Great teams find a way to win even on their off nights.  For the last couple of weeks the Tigers have struggled one way or another and they've still found a way to get the win.

Quote from Pat Coleman:
"Because the way in which they lost is key to understanding their mind-set, which is only what the entire column is about."

Sorry Pat, I didn't check the FAQ page before asking this and I assume it's on there, but who gives a dip about Redlands and their program?  They lost to a superior team last Saturday.  When does the mindset of a team losing to a superior team ever make national news?  Especially when it has become a tradition for that team to lose to that superior team every year.  Oxy has made putting Redlands in its place a healthy tradition.  Where's the story on that?

I guess I do understand the underlying point of the article:  Hey Redlands, it is okay that Oxy beats you every year.  Obviously, even after six straight, your program still can't gratefully swallow a loss to the Tigers but worry not, you still have a shot at the playoffs if you win out.
I wouldn't be holding my breath for both Oxy and Redlands in the playoffs together.  In the last six years Redlands has lost to Oxy six times.  In every season but one they followed up that loss with another SCIAC loss somewhere down the road.

I'm sorry. From now on we will only talk about undefeated teams.

Well sheesh Tigerheart--- [sarcasm] why are we talking about Oxy either, they also "lost to a superior team"....  might as well cancel the rest of their SCIAC schedule and call it a wasted year...i mean they, like Redlands, lost a game[/sarcasm]

Oh callow youth.  TigerHeart . . . whatever happened to grace in victory?   Smack talk ahead, grace after, not vice versa.

And I think that all west coast DIII fans would prefer to see MORE SCIAC and NWC presence in the playoffs, not fewer . . . and so outside of our head to head contests, like to see our competition do well and gain recognition on a national scale . . .
