Eyewitness report from Eagle Rock:

Cal Lutheran 24 Oxy 14 Final

The Kingsmen got the big plays when they needed them and beat the Tigers on a beautiful, clear night.

The first half was a tough defensive battle. After a scoreless first quarter, CLU pinned Oxy back on its 2 after a well-placed punt by Josh Oosterhof. Oxy played it very conservatively and punted the ball back to CLU at the Oxy 44. From there Brian Stuart scored on a beautiful run to the left side and CLU had the lead 7-0. The Tigers came back and tied the score on a 12-yard pass from Scott Saunders to Chris Washington, who did a toe dance to stay in bounds at the back line of the end zone. The half ended 7-7.

In the third quarter, Oxy's Kevin May intercepted Jericho Toilolo's pass and returned it to the CLU 38. On 4th-and-2 Oxy went for it but Saunders' pass was incomplete and Oxy turned it over on downs. Duly inspired, Cal Lutheran went 70 yards and scored on a 4-yard run by Stuart and CLU led 14-7.

In the fourth quarter, after CLU intercepted a Saunders pass, Jackson Damron hit a 38-yard FG that looked like it was tipped but floated through to give CLU a 17-7 lead. On the next series Saunders was intercepted again, but CLU couldn't move the ball and had to punt. Jordan Washington caught the ball in traffic at the 13, spun completely around and sprinted up the middle and down the left sideline for an 87-yard return and Oxy cut the lead to 17-14. The Tigers' euphoria was short-lived, however, because after the ensuing kickoff Toilolo went deep to Eric Rogers on a 74-yard bomb, and CLU was up 24-14. Oxy had the ball a couple of more times but couldn't get a score, and CLU ran out the clock.

For Cal Lutheran, Brian Stuart had 164 yards on 28 carries and 2 TDs, and was very impressive on several runs, especially going to the left. Fast, quick and strong. Jericho Toilolo was only 11-for-23 passing for 154 yards (and 74 of those were on one play) and an interception, but he had 38 yards rushing on 6 carries and had some keys runs scrambling away from pursuing Oxy defenders. The Kingsmen's defense played an outstanding game, holding Oxy to 216 total yards and only 4 net yards rushing. Jordan Barta was in the Oxy backfield all night long; he had 9 tackles, and sacked Saunders twice.

For Oxy, Scott Saunders was 23-for-39 passing for 212 yards and 2 interceptions. Brothers Chris and Jordan Washington combined for 282 all-purpose yards.

With the win, CLU is now 6-1 and 4-0 SCIAC and in complete control of its playoff destiny. The Kingsmen are at La Verne next week. Oxy falls to 5-2 and 3-1 in the conference. The Tigers play at Pomona next Saturday in the annual battle for The Drum.

Saw a portion of the KLADY-TV coverage on the Oxy website, and it was a major upgrade from the Linfield game. The "50" camera person did a better job following the ball, and it was good to have a hand held sideline camera, even if that person wasn't the steadiest. The score graphics were welcome, and the announcers were fine.
There was an occasional repeating audio glitch, hopefully that will be fixed before the next game. It did appear as though the director was inexperienced, because they kept cutting from both cameras in the middle of the play, you don't see this anywhere else because it's disorienting to the viewer. The only other easy fix would be the score graphics, they may have been done by the director as well. I noticed for a time in the game, the score was 7-7, but strangely, the graphics had 07-07. Of course, 07-07 is not a real score, you never see zeros like that except for access TV.
Overall, good presentation for this type of production, and the SCIAC will be well represented in the playoffs, good to see the SCIAC playing all the NWC teams again.

Watched the game and I agree that whoever the SCIAC sends into the playoffs is going to be tough to deal with.  A strong top three teams in the SCIAC this season.

You are just trying to get us overconfident for the inevitable Linfield game. ;)

Oxy can still tie for the SCIAC championship in a two team or three team scenario, but, because of the Rose Bowl Rule, they will not get to the playoffs if only one SCIAC team is chosen.

Congrats to the Kingsmen on a hard fought victory in Eagle Rock.  For some reason I couldn't get the broadcast here, so all my info about the game so far is from the box score, as well as the SID and OxyBob write-ups.  It looks like the Oxy offense just couldn't get anything going in the second half, while Stuart put up a solid ground game for CLU, who didn't pass well except for the one long bomb for a TD.

The Tigers can still get a piece of their 5th SCIAC crown in 6 years with a Redlands win over the 'LU.  Here's hoping Oxy gets back to it and finishes out the season with pride and hard work. No repeats of the '07 Whittier game please!  One of those was enough for a lifetime...

Oh and...
*GULP* Go Bulldogs!  :o

All three of the SCIAC teams are "others receiving votes".  Maybe  they will sneak up on the other teams during the playoffs.

Hats off to the Who on their Win last night at the Rock. Sounds and looks like both teams battled their tails off in the first half. Unfortunately, my Tigers couldn't claw their ways back during the second half.
Here's to Oxy learning from this game and finishing off with strong W's. I can assure you that Coach W and Crew will find extra ways to still motivate the men in Orange and Black to finish all games on a stronger note.

At this point, rakings are useless for any SCIAC team unfortunetely. It would be nice from a respect standpoint, but I think everyone here knows where the SCIAC stands in the respect department anyways - so whats the worth.

Rankings aside when CLU wins out, they will face Linfield at Linfield. Oxy left hoping for La Verne/Redlands, Redlands hoping for Whittier in a repeat scenario of 07'.

Though continuing to prove their ability weekly, for CLU there is nothing left to do but WIN, one game at a time, Starting with La Verne.

D O.C.

stoonk....sorry, I DO plan on Redlands - CLU in two weeks.

IF it turns out to be CLU heading north to McMinnville it will serve them well since the home - home starts 2010 season. Most of the team has traveled north to PLU and know what to expect on such a trip, except for playoff caliber team, of course.

Ghost of Brig

Dens, they lost to a playoff caliber team in oregon earlier this year...

This story in the Ventura County Star summed up the game nicely:
