I just want to wish "ALL THE PLAYERS"  good luck this weekend in their games.  I know they've worked very hard during the off season and this is my first year as a parent experiencing D3 football.  I've enjoyed every minute of it, both the wins and the losses (good character building)!  I've been following this blog for the past few weeks and although you guys can be very "Obusive, lol" at times, I really enjoy the informational part of it!

I've learned so much about D3 football and the passionate people who support it.  This year has been a great experience for my son who has been fortunate enough to see some great field time as a freshmen.  He loves the program he chose, the coaches and then academic decisions that he made!

Keep entertaining me with your POSTS!  I have seriously learned a lot with the back and forth discussions and I hope you guys won't disappoint me over the next two weeks!

Again, good luck to each and every player this weekend.

jdD3FBfan,

+k for your first post AND it's quality.

We won't disappoint.  Soon we will all unite against the NWC. :D

I'll be looking for you, if you get sent to Texas.  But first you have to beat Chapman and CLU. :-X

Saturday's schedule:

Cal Lutheran (6-1, 4-0 SCIAC) @ La Verne (0-7, 0-5) 1:00 p.m.
Oxy (5-2, 3-1) @ Pomona (4-3, 2-2) 1:00 p.m.
Claremont (3-4, 1-3) @ Whittier (3-4, 1-3)  7:00 p.m.
Redlands (6-1, 3-1) @ Chapman (3-4) 7:00 p.m.

CLU vs. ULV: Cal Lutheran will roll over winless La Verne.

Claremont vs. Whittier: The Stags have lost 3 straight. The Poets are coming off a win at La Verne. Pick: Whittier.

Redlands vs. Chapman: Alex Rouch leads the Panthers to upset win over the Bulldogs. Then again, maybe not. Pick: Redlands.

Oxy vs. Pomona: 111th meeting between the Tigers and the Sagehens, dating back to 1895. (No, I was not there for the first game.) Oxy leads the series 59-48-3 and has won the last 5 in a row. Since 1941 the teams have played for "The Drum," which is awarded to the winner. What would you rather be, a Tiger or a Chicken? Pick: Oxy.

Thank you Oxy Bob!  This is the kind of information/history I enjoy learning about from this blog.  I knew nothing about the history of "THE DRUM" until today!

Thank you!

I have it on good authority that while Bob was not there for the first game, he did listen to the audio broadcast via tin cans and a very long string. ;D ;D ;D

Oh yeah? Have you been to a Chapman game?

I actually have attended (2) Chapman games during the recruiting process.  The coaches, players and administrators treated our family with the upmost respect, as did all of the schools we visited.  I believe the Chapman players work hard and deserve to be treated like the respectible young men that they are....So I am not quite sure what your statement ("Have you been to a Chapman game?") is supposed to mean!

If you are talking about the "QB" comments that are flying around, I was not saying I learned "anything" from those.  There will always be OPINIONS from every side and since I have no first hand knowledge on the situation with the Chapman QB I will not comment on that.  I believe the coaches make choices based on what is best for "their team", and usually those of us on the outside don't really know the entire story. I am absolutely "outside" the circle on this topic.

Good luck everyone.  Looking forward and hoping that all of the Senior Players have great games!  Enjoy.

Classy, much respect.

This weeks games (CLU-La Verne, Oxy-Pamona, Redlands-Chapman) are as Big as any. They are all playoff games now.

Don't feel bad. None of us know what any of D O.C.'s cryptograms mean.

Enjoy your trip to Chapman. Except for the electrified fence and armed sentries with guard dogs protecting their precious field, Chapman's a nice place. For a pregame meal try Watson Drug & Soda Fountain on Chapman Avenue off the traffic circle in downtown Orange.

The History of Cecil the Sagehen

The history of the Pomona College mascot and nickname is a slightly more complex matter. As mentioned earlier, the college competed under a variety of names through 1913, when the nickname "Sage Hen" first appeared in a November 29, issue of The Student Life:

"Once again the Oxy Tiger wanders from his lair and comes to peaceful, peaceful Claremont with intent to murder. The Sage Hen will fight -- on the field. On the campus she is entirely amicable."
~ E. H. Spoor '15
Sports Editor,
The Student Life

From 1914 thru 1917, the nickname "Hun" and "Sagehen" were used arbitrarily. Beginning in 1918 and continuing to the present, the Sagehen became the only symbol of Pomona and later Pomona-Claremont, and Pomona-Pitzer athletics.

What is a Sagehen, and how did it become our mascot? The first question is far easier to answer than the second one.

The Sage Grouse, and more specifically, the Greater Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is a large ground-dwelling bird that can reach up to 30 inches in length and two feet in height. It is distinguished by its long pointed tail. The Greater Sage Grouse is an omnivore and eats mainly insects and sagebrush, hence its name. It is unique for its fierce loyalty to a specific area, and thus its livelihood can be completely reliant on the existence of sagebrush.

There are several stories regarding the origin of our beloved Cecil the Sagehen. The most prevalent is that a reporter while intending to refer to the Pomona athletic teams as sage (meaning wise) Huns, accidentally typed hens. While this story is frequently retold, this seems both unlikely and highly coincidental. Considering the relative distance from the "u" and the "e", and taking into consideration editorial supervision as well as the actual existence of Sage Hens in the southern California, this seems to be no more than a myth. However Pomona College came to be known as the Sagehens, it seems especially fitting considering the bird's origins and originality.

The first reference to "Cecil" is made in the 1946 Metate (Pomona College's yearbook), and there have been several incarnations since that time.

So apparently Pomona decided to "man up" its otherwise "amicable she grouse" mascot by naming her Cecil.

As someone once said:  "Mission accomplished"

IO TRIUMPHE, EAT'EM UP TIGERS!!
