While I am disappointed that Oxy won't make the playoffs this year, I take solace in the knowledge that from now on in the event of a 3-way tie Redlands will get the conference AQ under the Rose Bowl Rule.

I thought that in the event of a three way tie, that Cal Lu would get the nod . . . I thought that the Dawgs were the last SCIAC team other than Oxy to go to the playoffs . . . am I delusional?

Pat Coleman

Not delusional, just misunderstanding what OB is getting at. He's saying that after Cal Lu gets in this year, Redlands will be the team of the three that has been out of the playoffs the longest.

Clu would get the nod in the case of the rose bowl rule this year, but upon making the playoffs the role of the last sciac team to play in the playoffs would shift to redlands (07' was their last appearance). Meaning the years moving forward would give redlands the aq bid should the rose bowl rule come into effect again.

Kingsmen4

I guess I was too slow to the punch... Ya, what pat said

Pat Coleman

That's OK -- I was getting concerned that I might be on the same wavelength as OB. Glad to see I wasn't the only one who understood. :)

Unless One of the teams tying is a team other then Oxy, Redlands, or Cal Lu then Redlands would sit ( it could happen  ::)).

Starting in 2004, Oxy instituted another tradition with Redlands. In that rivalry game, Oxy wins every single year. There is no trophy like "The Drum" or "The Shoes" involved, but the game has come to be known as "The Yearly Beating."
OxyBob

We wont need a trophy or a tradition when we beat Oxy, we will just take the win and move on to the next opponent, unlike you Oxy Bob, we will have class when we win....

I have to disagree with this... I am former player from oxy grad '06!  If you ever played in the SCIAC you know that even if you lose every game and still beat Redlands there is some hope!  I started playing at oxy when Redlands was still considered the team to beat!  Being that since 99 they have out right won conference 4 times and were co-champs once.  At the time they were the team to knock off the "soap box".  Which is the same sting the oxy is feeling right now (exception this season... might be wearing off).  Oxy and Redlands will forever hold a grudge whether there is a trophy or some material item that is passed between them.  Actually given the records over the past 10 years it seems to be the conference title!

And while we always hope we beat Redlands at the end of the day you leave everything on the field.  That way if I ran into a player at a bar I could buy them a drink and shake their hand!

That being said congratulation to Cal Lu this year.  It does seem that the level of the SCIAC has significantly raised over the last 10 years.  I am proud to say that I played in the SCIAC and hope to follow it for the rest on my life always hoping that OXY beats REDLANDS  ;D...
Hats off to everyone including OxyBob you little devil you!

"The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand."  Vince Lombardi

Another great week of D3 football.  I thought the above quote was appropriate as we enter the last week of play for many teams.  For those teams that won't be "moving on", it is such a sad time.  A successful season shouldn't be measured just by "Championships" or "Playoff Games"!  I hope that all of these young men can look back on their season and realize that they are all "Champions".  They have work hard, dedicated many hours, fought many battles; and whether they win or lose their FOOTBALL games...... I hope they realize the experience will make them victorious in the game of LIFE!

I enjoyed reading all the blogs tonight.  YOU GUYS CRACK ME UP, and I truly do learn something everytime I log on.  Good luck to all the teams this week!

There aren't enough bulletin boards in the world to propel one of the other teams into title contention in the forseeable future.  (You can put this on there too, other teams, if you have room) *Barring any Andy Collins-esqe transfers, of course.

Just for fun, Redlands, CLU, and Oxy's combined records against the other 4 SCIAC schools since 2005, the approximate year the SCIAC became a three team race:

2005 CLU 4-0; UR 4-0; OXY 4-0
2006 CLU 3-1; UR 3-1; OXY 4-0
2007 CLU 4-0; UR 4-0; OXY 3-1
2008 CLU 4-0; UR 4-0; OXY 4-0
Year to date CLU 4-0; UR 4-0; OXY 3-0

TOTAL: 56-3 .949 winning percentage

2 Upsets by Whittier over UR in '06 and OXY in '07.  CMS over CLU in '06.

'07 Oxy and '06 CLU upsets were over eventual 3rd place teams.  '06 Whittier therefore is the only non "big three" team to beat an eventual SCIAC runner up, and no one outside the three have beaten a SCIAC champ.

No, just slow on the uptake. Nothing ever changes.

You're not a JERK (LOL)! ;)

You have to remember, I am just a "MOM"....I have not battled on the field for a "DRUM", "A PAIR OF SHOES" or a "TROPHY" so I am coming from a totally different perspective than you guys.  Although I understand and enjoy the bantering (Competition) between the schools; I always look at the bigger picture (sorry, it's a habit)!  With three boys who play football I know the years they were not on the winning side of the scoreboard are the years they learned the most about their own character!

It's easy to coach and be on a winning team, but I always respect the coaches and players who show up for practice each and every day (just like everyone else) knowing there is no chance in hell they will win a Championship.  KUDOS to those coaches for inspiring those players to give it there all every week and KUDOS to the players for doing what is asked of them.  To me that is the true spirit of the game of football!

Sorry for all the "sappy posts".....none of you are jerks (well, I haven't formed any real opinions yet)!  Maybe when I get to know you all better I will change my mind ;)

You would have been a great assistant to the legendary Roland Ortmayer of La Verne.

This is worth the read.  He used to schedule three games he was likely to win,  three he was likely to lose, and three that were even, just to give his players all of these experiences.

That time of the year then so here we go...

Since 1999 combined CLU, Redlands, Occidental record against the NWC in playoff competition 1 - 6. (Willamette embarrassed the NWC once.)

OK, not delusional . . . but not as slow on the uptake as you might think.  Given that you are learned member of the bar and an outstanding wordsmith . . . I took the "from now on in" with a bit of confusion since it is possible from this temporal point in time space for the Poets to upset the Tigers and the Dawgs to beat the Kingsmen which would give Redlands the playoff spot in light of their head to head victory over the Who in this scenario . . . thus my bit of confusion . . . since I didn't think you'd take much solace until it is a done deal and the refrigerator door is closed and the lights are turned off.
