Redlands vs. Cal Lutheran: A CLU victory secures the Kingsmen's first outright SCIAC title since CLU joined the conference in 1991. Pick: Cal Lutheran, strictly out of antipathy for Redlands.

Thats the kind of honesty I can appreciate  :)

QuoteNow, Oxy does have a great campus

I love it, but that has been disputed before.  Enter the 2006 Oxy Redlands game, just after Andy Collins' naked bootleg run for the clinching TD:
[Me smack talking on PAT] "Bet you wish you'd studied harder and got into Oxy now, huh meathead?"

[Redlands Guy]  "Nah, way too many hills.  Hills suck."

The perfect comeback.  He didn't even hesitate.  I was speechless.  ;D

I know that guy was not me cause I got into OXY.... But I do remember that play, I was still tackling the running back who carried out a great fake and had our entire defense fooled.

Redlands over Cal Who, although this time it won't be as easy decisive as it was two years ago...

Good luck and I will hope for no injuries this weekend

OK, I'll bite. We all know every point in a basketball game counts but everyone remembers the person at the free throw line with 0.02 on the clock that misses.

Yeah, yeah, we all know a 65 yard drive that includes a 5 yard offensive infraction that ends at the two was blah blah blah.

We all should know the infractions that go on at the bottom of a pile and the ones that are called out in the open...

Do you really want me to bring up "The Mishap in the Mud" of 2000
(here ya go newbies! http://www.linfield.edu/sports/records/fb/2000/cent1125.htm

Instant replay was inserted in the money game for a reason I figure.

Point was Redlands scored on a 90 yard drive at the end of game and it was called back. It now makes a MAJOR difference in all the speculation going on about seeding. One little eentsy teentsy mistake.

Thank-you and now on to your regularly scheduled program.

Point was Redlands scored on a 90 yard drive at the end of game and it was called back.

And on the next play Redlands missed a 30-yard FG with 3 seconds left. Well, they didn't miss it, they had it stuffed back down their throats. And before that Redlands missed a 19-yard chip shot FG when they couldn't punch it in from the 2. And of course let's not forget the series of really stupid penalties Redlands took on Oxy's scoring drive when it was 24-10.

One play does not a UR loss make.

All CLU seniors tomorrow will be using your situation (lost last game of career to "the who", a hated rival) as a reminder for why this game is important. Not for playoffs, not for conference championships, but because it is their last chance to beat Redlands.

ITS THE LAST ONE THAT COUNTS... and the LAST ONE that sticks in your head for the rest of your life. Not the one two years ago. We both know that.

;)

D O.C.

Those are facts.

It is also a fact that in a tie game Occidental had Redlands back on it's own ten yard line with less than two minutes to play Redlands went 90 yards and scored. It was called back.

The game went into overtime.

You ditched me at half.

Nothing like a few cool frosties at a presidential library to get fired up for the game . . . and speaking of presidential libraries . . . I am willing to wager that Oxy-Whittier match is the ONLY DIII matchup ALL YEAR between DIII schools where BOTH schools have alums who have formally resided at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.  (You all know Nixon played football for Whittier right?).  OB used to watch him play . . . Bob, what can you tell us about Tricky Dick on the gridiron?

IO TRIUMPHE, EAT'EM UP TIGERS!

Should be a good one between CLU and Redlands.  CLU should be the favorite on paper, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this matchup is favorable for Redlands.  If they don't shoot themselves in the foot (a big if) I'll predict a 'dogs win.

Oxy retains the shoes of course, with HECTOR watching anxiously.

Question: If UR wins and Oxy wins, which of the 3 teams gets to keep the SCIAC trophy?

Nixon sat on the bench; Obama was teased by the French. Nixon was voted President; Obama voted "Present." As for formally residing in the White House, hopefully in January 2013 we'll be able to say that Obama formerly resided there.

Quote from Whittier head coach B.J. Hammer in the Pasadena Star-News:

Quote"One thing I'll say about Oxy," Hammer went on. "They know how to win, even when they are not the better team or don't have better talent. They find a way."

Hammer was Whittier's defensive coordinator from 2003-2005, and became head coach in 2006. Since 2003 Oxy is 57-11 and 36-5 in SCIAC games, with 4 conference titles and 4 playoff appearances. During the same period the Poets are 15-47 overall and 7-34 in conference games. So Hammer would certainly be an expert in determining who is not the better team or who doesn't have better talent.

For my friends in the SCIAC - although this show does have an "eastern bias" (but doesn't everything in sports?) you can post questions for Frank and I to cover with Chairwoman Solomen:

Quote from: Frank Rossi on November 13, 2009, 11:05:28 PM
Sunday on a special "Selection Sunday" edition of "In the HuddLLe" at http://inthehuddlle.com, we will be joined by Joy Solomen, this year's NCAA Division III Football Championship Committee Chairwoman.  She will discuss the bracketing process -- from selection of the Field of 32 to the placement and seeding of those teams.

In order to make the interview more interactive, we would ask those with questions to post those questions between 3:30pm EST and 5:00pm EST to the "East Region Playoffs" message board on Sunday (following the release of the brackets).  We will not just focus on the Liberty League team in the mix or even just the East Region -- we will discuss any surprises and concerns that become evident once the brackets are released.

In addition to Chairwoman Solomen, we will interview Liberty League Commissioner Timothy Danehy, speak with the coach of the Liberty League team that wins tomorrow's League Championship Game and discuss the team the Liberty League participant will face.  Please join us starting at 7:30pm EST at http://inthehuddlle.com (or for the archive starting at around 10:00pm EST).

Shoes on the line in season finale at Whittier

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2009) – Last weekend Occidental College brought "The Drum" home to Eagle Rock with a 44-30 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. This weekend, in the final of the season, the Tigers hope to duplicate the effort as they take the field on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1:00 p.m. to play Whittier College in the "Battle for the Shoes" in the second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivalry game in as many weeks.

The Tigers
Occidental improved to 6-2 overall, 5-1 in SCIAC play after rallying from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the Sagehens. Senior quarterback Scott Saunders had a career day as he threw for 213 yards and collected another 117 rushing yards for 330 of the Tigers' 396 yards. He completed 18-of-25 passes with his longest a 32-yard completion to Jordan Washington for his only passing touchdown of the day. Saunders rushed for two more scores, with the first marking the longest run of his career at 34 yards while Jason Haller rushed for a pair of scores as he averaged 6.0 yards per carry.

The defensive was a nuisance all afternoon, led by Zac Perkins and Greg Holsworth who combined for three interceptions and a pair of touchdowns. Holsworth sparked a come-back with his second interception of the afternoon, running back 85-yards for a TD. The sophomore linebacker was active for the Black and Orange all afternoon as he tallied seven tackles, five solo, with 1.5 for a loss of eight yards. Perkins, who was named to the d3football.com Team of the Week, tied the game at 23-23 when he ran back a blocked PAT attempt for a safety. He then went on to intercept the PP quarterback, returning the pick for 42 yards, adding eight tackles, all solo stops, with two for a loss of yardage, while breaking up a play. Senior Trace Wallace led all players with 11 tackles (nine solo). Alex Wertheimer had 4.5 tackles for a loss of 16 yards, including a sack for a loss of seven yards, as he finished with nine stops and  Jesse Fischer also had a sack, pushing back the Sagehens nine yards.

The Poets
Whittier enters the final game of the season with a 3-5 record and a 1-4 SCIAC mark. The Poets' sophomore quarterback, Alesana Sausau, was 6-for-14 with one touchdown pass to Josh Ollison. Whittier rushed the ball 39 times for 208 yards led by Pete Mitchell who scurried for 73 yards while Paul Schilling picked up 47 yards. Rodrigo Murtalla was responsible for the only other WC touchdown of the afternoon. Roman Ferreria hit a 32-yard field goal and added a pair of PATs in the game.

Defensively Jared Cato had a game-high nine tackles (1.0 for a loss of seven yards) while Josh Lomeli and Chris Syfers each had eight stops. Tyson Schilling had a game-high 2.5 tackles for loss of nine yards including one of three sacks.  Aaron Alonzo had a sack for a loss of 14 yards while forcing a pair of fumbles while Kirkpatrick recorded a sack, pushing CMS back seven yards. Syfers also forced a fumble, all three were recovered by the Poets.

The Series
The Poets and Tigers first met in 1895, however there are no records between then and 1907. The two rivals did not meet in 1918, but resumed the annual showdown in 1919 and played through the 1942 season prior to World War II. Upon the return to the gridiron in 1946, the teams have played each year in the "Battle for The Shoes," which is  one of Division III football's most historic games. Overall, Occidental holds an edge in the all-time record books with a 53-45 advantage. The only tie in the history of the rivalry came in 1916. The teams have played for the coveted "Shoes" 64 times with each team having won 32 times. Over the last 23 years Oxy has earned 18 victories to the Poets' five.

The Shoes
Prior to the 1939 game between Occidental and Whittier, members of the Occidental team stole All-American Myron Claxton's shoes from the locker room forcing the Whittier star to play in his work boots. Even without his shoes, Claxton led Whittier to a 36-0 win which marked the seventh straight win for WC. The teams played three more times before WWII in 1942 and when the rivalry continued in '46 members of the Franklin Society of Whittier College had Claxton's shoes bronzed. Occidental won the first 'Battle of the Shoes' in '46 and kept the trophy for two more seasons before Whittier won a 54-6 decision in 1949.

Congrats to the clu kingsmen. Most importantly, they beat up redlands. Fortunately coming along with that is a much overdue outright sciac championship and a guaranteed bid to the playoffs. Very proud of these guys, but now it starts. Best of luck in Making a run and representing the sciac well in the post season!

CONGRATS TO THE KINGSMEN!  Good luck in the playoffs!

Great season for the SCIAC in general!  Even though I had to see it from my desk at the club!  Good job OXY in keeping the shoes in their rightful home... I know Hector is Happy!

Now maybe I am just bringing up an old topic, but why does it seem that the SCIAC might never be able to see two teams make it the playoffs?  Is it really just how close they are?  I mean OXY had a strong season and can see no reason why they couldn't have a chance!
O.C. RAH!
