CONGRATS TO THE KINGSMEN!  Good luck in the playoffs!

Great season for the SCIAC in general!  Even though I had to see it from my desk at the club!  Good job OXY in keeping the shoes in their rightful home... I know Hector is Happy!

Now maybe I am just bringing up an old topic, but why does it seem that the SCIAC might never be able to see two teams make it the playoffs?  Is it really just how close they are?  I mean OXY had a strong season and can see no reason why they couldn't have a chance!
2 losses and no wins against regionally ranked opponents is a big reason why Oxy and Redlands are both not going to earn a 2nd playoff spot for the SCIAC this year---Had Oxy beat Linfield and only lost the one game they would have a shot.  Had Redlands beat Cal Lu today they would have had a shot....but their location (as with teams in the NWC) makes it harder because the NCAA prefers to bus teams rather than fly them if possible.
Go Cats!

Congrats to the Kingsmen.

I was in attendance for pre-game tailgating and made it until right b/f the 3rd quarter (was feeding Pat with score updates) until my two kids (5 and 3 yr olds) had a melt-down and I had to split.

As usual it was a great atmosphere at Mt Clef and a beautiful fall day in T.O.

Good luck in the NCAAs and congrats again on your first out-right SCIAC title.

Eyewitness report from Whittier:

Oxy 45 Whittier 23 Final

Beautiful sunny day in Worsham Canyon and a nice crowd on hand. Oxy left no doubt in this one as the Tigers scored on their first 6 possessions and rolled to an easy 45-23 win.

For Oxy, Scott Saunders was 21-for-31 for 267 yards and 2 TDs, including a 59-yard catch and run by Jason Lehman. Saunders also rushed for 71 yards on 11 carries and one TD. Jason Haller rushed for 72 yards on 14 carries and 2 TDs. Jason Lehman had fantastic game with 10 catches for 130 yards. The Washington brothers combined for 161 all-purpose yards (Chris-112, Jordan-49). Field goal-wise, Neil Martin was 2-for-2, and Josh Mun was 1-for-1. The Oxy defense shined brightly again and held the Poets to only 67 yards rushing, 237 total yards. Trace Wallace and Dillon Tucker each picked off Alesana Sausau. Alex Wertheimer had 2 sacks. For Whittier, Josh Ollison had a big day with 5 catches for 116 yards and 3 TDs.

Oxy finishes the season 7-2 overall and 5-1 SCIAC, while Whittier was 3-6 overall and 1-5 in conference.

Highlight of the day was spending it sitting with Fear the Poet, and getting to meet former WC standout players Anthony Pomponio and Matt Reaber, both of whom are leading successful post-graduation lives.

To all the Oxy players and coaches, congratulations on another tremendous winning season. To all the Oxy seniors, it's been a pleasure to watch you all play. You will be dearly missed!

Great job by Cal Lutheran to beat Redlands and win the SCIAC title outright for the first time. Well done and well-deserved. Good luck next week in the playoffs at Linfield.

I know we have a lot to be happy about around CLU right now, but this win brings up a very old gripe...

Hopefully this long awaited playoff bid will be a wakeup call to the CLU admin/decision makers. Should CLU ever receive the rights to a home playoff game (no it will not happen this year, but is getting closer every year), the NCAA would not allow us to house it at Mount Clef because it does not meet many obvious and necessary regulations (full press box, visitors' locker room, stands that can house a proper number of fans, etc.).

Don't get me wrong, I love Mount Clef stadium and would not have wished to play anywhere else (Plus seeing the visitors fans all bunched together in three youth soccer sized bleacher set ups is pretty hilarious), but having to play a home playoff game away is pretty ridiculous - and would defeat the purpose of earning a home game.

Considering every other CLU athletic team to my knowledge has received all new facilities and playing fields/stadiums in the last few years with the expansion to "North Campus", I find it confusing why the team on campus that brings the most enrollment by a large margin cannot receive the nod to have a new stadium, or at least have it in public consideration.

My brother played at CLU from 01'-04' and on his recruiting trip was told that he would play in a new stadium in his career, and I received the same story - meaning it was in the works LONG ago and still has not surfaced as a priority to the school.

Though it is not sold as a recruiting point now (Old Mt. Clef has all the charm in the world on game days, especially when housing a big win to Redlands), I think it is time to build something that is at least viewed as acceptable to play an NCAA playoff game there.

Had to get that off before I forgot amidst celebration of a great game and season. I love the school, and the support from CLU to the football program has continued to rise in the last decade, but this seems like a no brainer.

Maybe with CLU winning the SCIAC and getting into the field will motivate to do something with Mt. Clef.  It is a perfect location on campus great atmosphere it just needs a major face lift (including lights) to become a decent venue....although it is unique to be able to roam the sidelines.

Congrats to CLU. From past NCAA decisions, it appears that you will be coming to the Catdome, a wonderful place.

Kingsmen4, when we had our old grass field there were years that we couldn't hold a playoff game on campus, as the field got too torn up during the regular season. We held games at the local high school, Portland, and even Willamette, for crying out loud! They had turf before we did. That was a huge impetus for Linfield getting turf.

It doesn't seem fair that football should be last in line at CLU for decent facilities. Maybe this trip to the playoffs will help you guys.

Congrats to CLU on a well deserved win.  You were the best team in the SCIAC this year, there's no arguing about it now.  Represent So-Cal well in the playoffs.  I've played at Linfield before, and let me be the first to tell you it sucks.  It's cold, it's in the middle of nowhere, and there's a wildcat with crazy flashing red eyes trying to give you seizures on the videoboard.  I think you can win though...

Awesome job by Oxy today against the Poets.  It seemed like Oxy showed the true potential of their team today, finally doing some things I thought I'd be seeing all year, like passing deep to Lehman and rushing Haller for big gains.  A great game by Saunders, the recievers, Haller, K Martin, Wertheimer and the rest of the defense.

Also good to see that seniors Kyle Kazarian and Dorian Vaughn got in the game today, and great that the starters could take care of business to get those guys some minutes to close out their careers.

Tough final loss for La Verne today, missing a field goal that would've sent the game into overtime.

Come on, Nihon Tiger, don't lie. You'll scare people.

The Catdome is a beautiful place. Today was warm and sunny, maybe in the low eighties. We might not be an urban campus, but at least we have air that you can breathe rather than see. Colored lights have always fascinated me, so I think our scoreboard is awesome. I could stare at it for hours and sometimes I do.

Congrats to the Kingsmen on their SCIAC Championship.

I enjoyed my first trip to and game at Mt. Clef stadium this year. Enjoy your trip to the Catdome. Both places have great game day atmosphere. I would also like to say that I very much enjoyed my first game at the Rock. Two games in one day, that was a fun weekend.

It's picking nits, but with the right combination of upsets this year it's possible that Cal Lu would play a lower seeded team.

Congrats to the Kingsmen on what sounds like a whole boatload of firsts:  undefeated SCIAC season, outright conference championship, and NCAA tournament appearance.

I'll admit that I'm pulling for Cal Lutheran in the playoffs.  I've never had an In-N-Out burger before.  If CLU ends up playing the Johnnies, hopefully a Kingsmen fan would be kind enough to bring some to the tailgate party.

I have an In-and-Out burger I've been saving for you for a couple of years TC. You are rooting for the wrong team. I even altered their bumper slogan for you to put on the pick-up.

Doesn't the big money high school Charter Oak have a stadium the NCAA would love? One phone call from Joe Montana might do it. Mt. Clef is so intimate - and the crowds always respectful not to become involved in the game - that you can sit field level 270 degrees, in a lawn chair!  The other 90 degrees is behind the players - can't see.
It reminds me of the LINFIELD days when we could lie in the pole vault pit and watch a couple of the 54 winning seasons.

(Oaks Christian - thank-you CalCat)

Kingsmen4;  With MIAC poster and www.JohnnieFootball.com contributor TC sticking his nose in SCIAC business I figure I should prolly add my two cents as well.

If you're interested in a new stadium you need to get ahold of your former head coache's father in law who is also a Thrivent Life exec.  I met this gentlemen on his trip to Minneapolis to the home office several years ago.

As mentioned, his son in law was the head coach prior to leaving for Canada a few seasons ago.  Not only is your fellow Kingsman alumni highly connected from an executive level, he told me he had never in his 40 some odd years as an alum had never missed a Cal Lutheran football game!

I gotta believe with a little support from you he'd find enough sheckles between Minneapolis and Thousand Oaks to build a nice tidy little football stadium.

Just a thought.

Trouble is they give all the extra sheckles to stoonk to keep him around.

Good one.

While the Kingsmen and their fans are in McMinnville, they can stop by the Evergreen Aviation Museum and take a gander at the Spruce Goose. That'll be apropos since CLU is also unlikely to get off the ground against Linfield.
