Yeah, it's usually not a good idea to attend your 10 year reunion BEFORE you graduate.

From the Camarillo Acorn:

QuoteCal Lutheran ranked in USA Today top-25 preseason football poll

After making its first NCAA postseason appearance in school history last season, the Cal Lutheran University football team has earned a No. 24 ranking in the USA Today Division III Top-25 poll, released earlier this month.

Under the three-year coaching reign of CLU alum Ben McEnroe, the Kingsmen have won a pair of conference titles, including the first outright crown in program history. During McEnroe's tenure the Kingsmen have posted a 20-8 record overall and a 16-2 mark in conference games.

Mount Union of Ohio, last year's Division III runner-up and a 10-time NCAA champion, is ranked No. 1 ahead of 2009 champion Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Other notable ranked teams include Linfield of Oregon, which knocked Cal Lutheran out of the playoffs in the first round last year. The teams will meet in CLU's season opener in Thousand Oaks on Sept. 11.

Cal Lutheran is the only Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team listed on the initial poll.

Even as hard as it was for me to take the situation... I find it hard that no one recognizes that fact that...

National Championships: Danny Jones = 1

Just Saying.

True, but also a reputation of quitting on his program, teamates, and school. National Championship or not the truth is in the pudding.

What happened happened. Myself and the other remaining players got over it, the program got over it (We tied for a conference championship with a team that 6 months prior had no coacing staff or starting QB), and DJ won a National Championship as the starting QB for UWW.

Cal Lu is now on top of the SCIAC so as far as I care that's all that matters... that the program is showing progression regardless of "drama" behind the scenes.

Should be an intreresting 2010 season no doubt. Cal Lu is the favorite as they have earned it. Oxy will have reloaded and Redlands has a good core coming back. Any of them could win the SCIAC next year. Hopefully, the bottom feeders have stepped up their game to help raise the profile of the conference nationally. Can't wait to see how it plays out.

BTW Selway is a great QB for the record. Though Stoonk's arm is pretty strong.

How did the Redlands Coaching staff play out? If there is one thing that worries me it is remembering when our coaching staff departed before my Junior year our team really came together and took it upon ourselves to "defy the odds", even before we had a new staff in place. Sometimes stuff like that happening is what a team needs to pull together and make a run, maybe Redlands has that going.

I can't stand that we are playing you guys 3rd game in this year either... there was nothing better than playing Redlands last game of the season, made the rivalry that much of a bigger game.

RFB

Turnover in the coaching staff should be a big challenge for Redlands. Not sure what is happening there but Coach Maynard will pull together a good staff. I like the new schedule, getting Cal Lu early should be to Redlands advantage. I'm really excited about having Oxy for homecoming. Time to break that nasty streak that they hold.

Im sorry I made you so upset by transferring RFB.  Although, I'm sure you are very educated on the situation and circumstances of it as well...

Only joking DJ.  It worked out for you and CalLu quickly moved on.  Win/Win for all sides.

On another note....going to start looking for airline fair down the LA for the CLU/Linfield game.  Looking forward to my one and only game at Mt. Clef stadium.

UWW9champ

Mt. Clef is a good spot to watch a game.. i know there is no stands on the away side but it allows you to watch the game from the field which is kinda cool.. This is my first year that im not playing/coaching on saturdays so I am hopefully going to make it down south for that one as well.. of course ill be dressed in all black with a fake beard.. CLU will have there hands full that day.. No hard feelings RFB im just messin with ya!!

CLUkingsmen12

wow.. is that you DJ??? hahaha.. you were the best QB to learn from. also helped having guys like Kingsmen4 to throw to.

Haven't been on in awhile.. so I am gonna catch up on some old topics...

Selway is a great QB. I have always enjoyed competing against him and watching him play during the games. DJ was the best competitor I have ever been around. He taught me so much in one year.

Now to the SCIAC for upcoming season...

I think it is going to be a close race between the CLU, Redlands, and Oxy. Should be interesting to see how the season goes. and I hope the CLU team steps up to the challenge of Linfield.. and the "D." Linfield is returning some good players and some big impact players. They were the tough, fast, and well coached. Hopefully I can meet some of the Linfield Alum at the game.

D O.C.

Alright then, a summer lovefest! OK, UWW9, I'm over it too. I'll tell BoBo. stoonk already knows since he was a big backer no matter what and he convinced me some time ago.

Occidental and CalLu scheduling LINFIELD was a big step for their programs iMHO.

RIP Don Coryell:

QuoteDon Coryell, Innovator in N.F.L.'s Passing Game, Dies at 85

Don Coryell, the San Diego Chargers coach who became an architect of pro football's modern passing game with his spectacular offense known as Air Coryell, died Thursday at a hospital in La Mesa, Calif. He was 85.
...

Coryell, who was born in Seattle on Oct. 17, 1924, played defensive back for the University of Washington. He coached at Whittier College in California from 1957 to 1959, then created a high-profile football program at San Diego State, where he coached from 1961 to 1972 and posted a record of 104-19-2.
...

Coryell was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999 and was the only coach to win at least 100 games in both college and the pros.

I liked playing oxy and Redlands at the end of the season. It let us really fine tune to come into the games full tilt, and also it just made things that much more BIG when competing for a championship and having the two biggest games in the later portion.

Also because we always had so many question marks coming into new seasons (new players/coaches at vital positions) it was tough playing teams like willamete the first game. It will be interesting to to see how a more established and confident clu will hold up to a front loaded schedule with oxy waiting at the finish line. Oxy vs. clu would make for a great "conference championship" game though no doubt, winner take all would really make things interesting.

Yep, no ring for me. Darn it, if I only had one I'm sure I would be Bill Gates by now.

BULLDOGALUM52

Wow, its been fun catching up with all the chatter, commotion, and bickering! I actually had to go back all the way to November 2009 to find my last post! Nevertheless, I hope I can contribute to some meaningful discussion like.....

Charles Roche is going to be named the new OC for Redlands....yeah I've never heard of him either but hopefully he will be able to instill a great offense utilizing Selway's strength's, much like Coach Jeff Thomas did.

I had the opportunity to play against Andy Collins, Justin Goltz, Danny Jones, and Jericho Toilolo, not to mention I played alongside Selway, for four years. Each one of those Quarterbacks had different attributes that made them special, personally my favorite, Danny Jones. Why you may ask, I sacked him a bunch!

But seriously, Collins by far is the most gifted and talented QB. Selway has great vision, a great arm and feet, but hes not the physical specimen Andy was(is).  Jericho was the best at staying in the pocket and delivering a perfect ball right before he got hit or as he was getting hit. Goltz was great at releasing the ball right away or tucking and running if the passing lane wasn't there. I remember most of the time i'd get a great jump off the snap count, Goltz would have already found the open man and delivered it to him. Jones was great at buying time and finding the open man on the run.

My point is that each QB has different talents, but ultimately, as we have found with the 2010 World Cup, the star doesn't make up a Championship team!  Its how well those players come together to play solid football.

Last point, if all the former SCIAC players here were presented an opportunity to play College Football for 6 years would you take it? Personally I wouldn't unless I was injured! Which is Selway's case, so  don't be so hard on Dr. Selway! He's working on cancer research! Redlands has a tumor the size of Eagle Rock and Mt. Clef ( or whatever the new stadium is going to be called) to overcome!

Go Dogs!
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.
