To Selway's credit, and all kidding aside, it takes a lot of determination to come back from any serious injury, let alone two season ending ones.  Anyone who can go to the training room and do rehab while their teammates are out practicing and playing games, with no chance to play until the next season, deserves some respect.  I think I was injured for 2 weeks of my 8 year football career, and they were two of the crappiest ones I can remember.

There is absolutely no worse feeling (maybe losing to oxy or redlands) than missing time on the field with injuries. I agree, if I would have been hurt in college, I wouldn't think twice about taking that extra year (or five).

I was injured in High School, 3 ACL reconstruction surgeries on my right knee before my junior year of high school. I ended up playing only my sophomore and the last half of my senior year. I will tell you, those were some trying times facing the fact that each time I went down, it would be 6 months to a year of rehab in order to be on the field again. I also think those injuries were a huge blessing. Because I was not recruited by anyone, I ended up at CLU (my brother had played there and they were the only coaches to acknkowlege my "highlight tape") and had the best 4 years of my life! I also learned how competetive d3 football was, because in AZ you don't hear anything about d3 in high school.

Those injuries caused me to become more hard working and determined than ever, and in the end it payed off. I could count on one hand how many practices in college I had to miss, and you couldn't keep me out of a game for anything. Getting hurt sucks, and I definitely get what bulldog is saying.

Both years we played at redlands at "the runner" I got concussions in the first half (not because they hit hard, because I fell on dirt where there should have been grass). :-)

Even in a stupor, I was jumping offsides and floating around the field in la-la land for a series, I somehow convinced the coaches I was ok.

When it comes down to it you have the rest of your life to pay for those injuries, but in the moment you just want to play as long as they will let you.

So in a long and drawn out explanation, as much crap as I will give selway on here and no matter how many times I overuse the "age" joke, its probably because we are the same age, but daily I am wearing a suit and he is suiting up for another year...

With that I hope all the teams are full forced and injury free coming into this year, and may the best team win. The best team being Cal Lu of course.

BULLDOGALUM52

Dahlby- thanks for the support

Nihon, Hopefully I will be seeing you at the Redlands-Oxy game, luckily I never had a serious injury, a few broken fingers and some sprains, but nothing that I would sit out for....

Kingsmen4- I must agree losing a game (especially to your rivals) is as bad a feeling as losing a season to injury,

In other news here is a link for the update on the new OC for Redlands: http://goredlands.com/sports/fball/2010-11/releases/20100708pl7fyp
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.

I'll be vacationing in southern California, LA and SD, for 10 days in a couple of weeks.  My main plans are to attend some DODGER games at DODGER STADIUM and we're also going to see them play a game in SD.  But that's only a small portion of the time we'll be out there so I was wondering if any of you could recommend some things that a person wouldn't want to miss seeing or doing when they were in the area.

Lindsay Lohan.  (At least you know she'll be in town; seeing or doing, your pick.)

On a more serious note, stop in for a drink and some eats in the bar (no way you'll get dinner reservations at this point) at Bazaar, at Hotel SLS in Beverly Hills.  Google Bazaar and Jose Andres if you want more info.  Try the virtual olives ("modern olives").  (Our older son used to bar tend there - it's definitely an experience you won't find in Wisc.)

I'm sure this is on your agenda but take in our beaches as much as you can. They really are pretty amazing. Here are my suggestions.

Los Angeles: Hermosa/Manhattan Beach
Orange County: Huntington/Newport Beach
San Diego: Pacific/Mission Beach and Coronado

After the Dodger game, go to Tommy's on Rampart and Beverly.

We have these things called Mountains.  Go to Big Bear or take the Tram out in Palm Springs up to Mt. San Jacinto

Take PCH (Hwy 1) from Seal Beach to Orange County Beaches Newport and Laguna to Dana Point, then pick up the 5 to San Diego

In San Diego, go to the Gas Lamp District.  Inland near Escondido, we have the Wild Animal Park, which is not your typical zoo.

I would avoid TJ, Mexico
You can't leave me....all the plants will die.

If you want to eat at a great burger place right on the beach in SD, I recommend Hodad's Burgers in Ocean Beach.  One of the best lunches I've ever had, bar-none.  Then you can walk a block and put your toes in the sand.  8-)

Tourists. These guys are real tourists.
You want the REAL Southern California? When leaving LAX on the San Diego Freeway (405) south towards Dago get off at Alameda Boulevard and turn left (north) towards downtown L. A. Stay on it until 7th Street DNTLA then turn right (east).

Dial 911 at any time.

Any of you guys IM me. I'm a free tour guide.   8-)

Just know that the police don't tend to respond in this area so 911 might not be the best. If you bring your own cinder blocks to provide the car  jackers with they will usually allow you to walk away with at least your shoes.

If traveling to the beach cities I would reccomend making a road trip to hit them all. Start in Malibu and head South on PCH - its a great scenic route with plenty of palces to stop off and hang out/eat. The Beachcomber on the Malibu pier is good food and good view (its Malibu though, so its no bargain). Go South all of the way through to Santa Monica, head through Venice (stop to check out the freaks and have a plate of ribs and bbq shrimp at Baby Blues). Take Lincoln through to Marina Del Rey and head to the coast once again in Playa Del Rey. From there you can see some more coastline and what the backside of LAX looks like. Stay on Vista Del Mar and you will reach Manhattan Beach. Stop at The North End Cafe, or Sloopy's for a burger - both are great. This route will take you through Manhattan Beach, Hermosa, Redondo, and you can take it around the cliffs of Palos Verdes which is a cool place to drive through. Get back on the 405, because San Pedro and Long Beach are nothing great. If staying in LA head back to your base camp and save OC for the way down to SD for the padres game.

I would then exit again in Huntington Beach, head to the coast, and go South. This run of PCH is great as well, and you can hit all of the cool towns in OC. Huntington, Newport, Laguna, Dana Point, and my favorite city in Southern California - San Clemente. Its off the beaten path and a real beach town. Farmers market on Sundays are great. Sonny's is the best for Pizza and italian but you won't get a seat during prime chow time. The Beach Fire is a good place for drinks and food as well.

From there its a straight shot down the 5 through Camp Penelton to SD. Take everyone elses advice because I don't know much about SD. If you are in Pacific Beach go to Typhoons to see college kids from other areas of the state and country enjoying there summer too much.

Stay away from these areas as they do not lend much to tourists:
-Inglewood (Betting the Pony's at Hollywood Park and taking a tour of the Forum is not what it is cracked up to be)
-Van Nuys (Or the entire Valley for that matter) too hot and too flat. Go to the beach.
-San Bernardino - It looks close to LA on a map, but unless you like truckers, Industrial Parks, or the ride to Palm Springs, there is no reason to visit. Plus Redlands is out there, and nobody likes that place.
-Santa Clarita - Suburbia, not a vacation spot. Magic Mountain is overrated.
-Carson - Unless your a soccer fan, nothing much here.
-Any Chain Restaraunt or Mall. There are malls everywhere and they all have the same old stuff. There are a million hole in the wall eateries in Southern California, take full advantage of that.

Driving tip: If you are going to be on any freeway, make sure it is before 6am or after 8pm. It will be the only way to avoid traffic. If you really want an LA experince, hit the 405 or 10 freeways around 5pm on a Friday. It will single handeldy make you despise our city.

Best of luck, enjoy it!

Here are few suggestions -

LA area:

Santa Monica Pier and Promenade (very touristy but quiessential SoCal) - can rent bikes in SM and cruise down the coast (Venice to Redondo, etc).  Bar at the Hotel Del Mar is a great place for sunset cocktails

The Farmer's Market / Grove - good eats in the old FM; close to the Sunset Strip, Hollywood, Mann's Chinese, etc.

Malibu / Cross Creek and/or Paradise Cove (rent a surf or paddleboard and head out - good eats at the Reel Inn, Geoffrey$

If you really have time, Santa Barbara is only an hour out but don't drive up there on a Friday PM or leave on a Sunday PM (can grab a train from DTLA to SB can also head south to Disney, etc.)

Pasadena - good museums and places to eat, Old Town very quaint and not far from Chavez Ravine (i.e., Dodgers' Stadium)

Bang for your buck - take a helicopter tour (out of Van Nuys airport).  Costs a couple hundred bucks per person but its an amazing way to see the city over a couple of hours...

OC

Huntington Beach pier
Laguna Nigel
Hop a catamaran from Dana Point to Catalina

SD

Old Town/Gas Lamp
PB (aka "Pacific Beach)
La Jolla - Torrey Pines; good restaurants in DT La Jolla
Wild Animal Park

Thanks for making me your fav qb bulldogalum52 glad you got my jersey dirty! When you played against the Redlands D you always knew you were in for a long game.. They were a tough team Which always made it fun competing against UofR. But what really scared me when we went up agaisnt redlands was when they were going through their pre-game ritual of barking and yelling that is what really made me nervous playing against them..
