Seems we have some turnover at CMS. Just the other day OxyBob was complaining of no action at either CMS or PP. If only he had waited a few days to browse their sites for news.

From the San Bernardino Sun:

QuoteCandaele to resign as CMS coach

The sideline at Claremont-Mudd- Scripps will be a bit different this fall as veteran football coach Rick Candaele has resigned effective Aug. 15.

Stags athletic director Mike Sutton said Candaele met with his team on Sunday. He wasn't totally surprised by the decision. The timing isn't necessarily good since teams start practice next month.
...

Candaele joined the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps staff in 1993 and assumed the head coaching position two years later. He has headed the program in five of its 14 winning seasons.

The Stags were coming off a 5-4 campaign that ended with a 28-21 victory over their neighbor Pomona-Pitzer in the annual Peace Pipe game. It marked the third straight year CMS won the rivalry game.

It hasn't always been easy as the Stags had to bang heads with the more athletically gifted teams in the SCIAC when their school's main priority is academics.
...

The transition should be a smooth one though as lead assistant Steve Retzlaff has been named the interim head coach until a thorough search can be conducted. Retzlaff arrived in 1993 along with Candaele and also worked with him at UCSB.

He had been serving as defensive coordinator since 2005 after seven years on the offensive side of the ball.
...

According to the Claremont web site, Candaele's overall coaching record was 77-87, SCIAC 30-53.

I think that two years of attendance triggers "alumni" status at most 4 year institutions.

Didn't the Goldman's melt down OJ's trophy after the civil suit? Or was that a myth??

I thought that I read and heard on TV a few years ago that they auctioned it off with several other of his personal belongings after the judge ok'd it.

Which brings up another interesting pondering: If Reggie Bush offered a big donation, would USC accept it?

By the way, Ralph looped me in on the back-channel conversation as to whether the USC discussion should be on this board or on a separate topic. If it continues, I can definitely split it off but if it's just one of the many topics people discuss in the offseason, I'm OK with it staying.
This article should help it tie in.

USC rakes in and keeps the TV Revenue money (increased, no doubt, by the running skills of R. Bush), the money generated from #5 jersey sales and, symbolically, gives back the trophy.  Nice gesture.  How about taking that revenue and, symbolically, donating it to a worthy cause...how about to a general D3 athletics fund to support all D3 sports, where the term student athlete still holds validity.

And a word about our dear NCAA...the elephant in the room is the $$ generated in the sports of Football and Basketball which fill the NCAA coffers and the coffers of the BCS, while the players are the one's risking their limbs and long term health.  Saban calling the agents pimps is the pot calling the kettle black.  The sweet nothings that a Saban or Pete Carroll whisper into these boys ears about future pro opportunities and National TV exposure glaze the eyes just as directly as any agent.   And don't think for a minute that things don't go sour if the kid can't hack it.

Is Bush blameless...No.  Are either USC or the NCAA...No.  These players bring a lot of immediate financial value with them to a given school and with the World Wide Leader it is easy to see.  The NCAA rules favor the NCAA.  A D1 kid signing a D1 scholarship agrees to a one-sided performance agreement where the NCAA (and the school) gain immediate benefit and complete control over the kid's playing career...the kids are bound to an exclusive services agreement with minor short term benefit and an uncertain long term payoff.  The monetary value of the "education" R. Bush stood to receive in exchange for his services was so one-sided in favor of the NCAA as to be laughable.

There is no fast fix.  The NCAA rules did not anticipate the magnitude of the revenue these sports have come to generate.  The NCAA certainly doesn't feel compelled to make any changes as long as they rake in the bulk of the pot of gold and we blame the players and coaches.

It almost reminds me of what's gone down in the City of Bell.  Until the cold light of day shown upon these folks they had no incentive to make any changes other than make more rules to further enrich themselves and take advantage of an ignorant constituency.

How is Bush's mother/stepfather guilty of taking money when Tebow's dad's ministry saw huge increases in donations from the new christians in Florida.  I don't see the difference.  They both are benefiting from the athletic prowess of a college student.

An apt observation...However if there is no quid pro quo, the Tebow Ministry is a not for profit...people's motivation for donating to an accredited charity isn't exactly an issue.  No direct benefit for the Tebows has been asserted.  Even if it resulted from increased donations from old Christians.

In the Bush case it is alleged that the parties with the money fully expected something in return for the benefits provided.

Perhaps Bush's folks should have set up a charitable foundation and ran it out of the mansion (paid for by "donations" received...)   8-)

Seriously though, the Tebow's family ministry was in place long before Timmy grew into everyone's All-American.

As with all "non-profit" charities, the question has to be asked -- what is the percentage of donations that are spent on "administrative expenses and salaries?"
