Dont think I claimed the Panthers could compete for the top spot in the SCIAC in Football....and indeed their record is dismal overall against the top 3 in the SCIAC....and who knows what team will roll out in 2010 but it seems the SCIAC teams better show up to play because they can and have been beaten by the lowly Panthers and have played close and competitive games at times.

But as always the Panthers are kept out of the SCIAC even though they play games against all SCIAC teams. It makes no sense...What do you fear a 5th place team will upset the SCIAC balance or is it you don't want to have to play them in Basketball and Baseball for Conference games...

I'm all for Chapman joining the SCIAC but something is going on behind the scenes to keep them out. There must be something that we the public do not know. They would be good additions in all sports and would help bolster the national profile of the SCIAC in all sports.

Regarding football, they have no excuse to be as poor of a program as they are now. With their facilities and location they should be one of the top DIII programs nationally in all sports.

To say anyone in the SCIAC fears Chapman, and that is what is keeping them out of the conference is a stretch, a realllly long stretch. All SCIAC schools are looking for help to make us look better on the national stage, and adding a conference game (and win) would likely do that. BUT... as a non-conference game Chapman would likely NOT be scheduled against SCIAC teams if it were not extremely economical to do so, because they are not helping anyone’s schedule currently as a non-conference opponent.

I agree with RFB - there has to be something political keeping Chapman out of the SCIAC, something that us speculators are not in the loop on.

I do however think that Mr. Bob is holding out on some insider info on Coach Widolff's departure...

Sorry, but I know nothing more than you do. An article in the San Bernardino Sun said this:

QuoteDale Widolff, entering his 28th season as the football coach at Occidental College, will be suspended without pay beginning Sept. 1 for violating NCAA rules and internal college policies, school officials have announced.

Widolff will not be able to have any contact with the team through Oct. 10. He will miss four games. School officials would not explain what NCAA rules - other to say they are not recruiting violations - were broken.

School spokesman Jim Tranquada said the school's report should be in the NCAA's hands either today or Thursday. When the NCAA has the report, he said, school officials will disclose the violations.
...

Offensive coordinator Eric Bergstrom will serve as the head coach while Widolff is gone. Widolff is still overseeing the team's practices before his suspension begins next week. The Tigers open the season Sept. 4 against visiting Menlo College.

Article in the Ventura County Star about CLU:

QuoteCLU checks a big goal off its list

As far as first impressions go, Cal Lutheran's football team is making a big one this season in the eyes of coach Ben McEnroe.

"This is the most physically developed team we have ever had," McEnroe said. "Our No. 1 goal was to get bigger on the offensive and defensive lines and we have definitely done that."

The Kingsmen opened camp over the weekend in preparation for its season-opening game on Sept. 11 against Linfield (Ore.) — the team that knocked CLU out of the playoffs last year.

Cal Lutheran's biggest priority in camp is finding a quarterback to replace departed senior Jericho Toilolo.

Three players are taking the bulk of the repetitions in practice so far — Jacob Laudenslayer, a transfer from Marshall University, Wes Garwood, Toilolo's backup last season, and Ventura High graduate Lee Mondol.
...

Regardless of which player emerges as the starter, [CLU] will have sizable linemen protecting him.

The increased emphasis on bulk resulted from some introspection following the loss to Linfield last season.

The coaching staff made it a priority on the recruiting trail, and the players made it a priority in the weight room.

I hope that didn't use it all up this year and have some left for next year.   :)

I agree that Chapman should be in the SCIAC.
Maybe economics will some day soon force the issue of Chapman joining the SCIAC. Scheduling each year becomes more and more difficult for a independent program like Chapman especially in some sports like basketball/baseball. Costs for travel makes it very difficult to schedule independent teams and pay for playing outside of SoCal area.

It just makes logical sense for Chapman to be in the SCIAC.  West Coast Independents like Menlo, Cal State East Bay, and  LaSierra have left NCAA and D3 which makes less choices for Chapman to play these days. It is some political reason why they are not.

Chapman is local to all SCIAC teams and it seems it would be a win win for both current SCIAC teams and Chapman to have this change go forward some day

QuoteBulldog football back at it

The Bulldogs are back.

After a nearly three-month layoff from the end of spring ball in May, the University of Redlands football team finally came back together on Saturday, Aug. 21, and held their first practice of the 2010 season on Sunday, Aug. 22.
...

While a large portion of UR's upcoming season will hinge on returning talent, Maynard and his staff were eager to get a look at the incoming freshmen and transfers Monday.

Practicing in helmets only, the Bulldog rookies went through position drills, 7-on-7 passing drills and more as they tried to impress their new coaches.

Watching from the sidelines while waiting for the veteran practice to start, senior starting quarterback Dan Selway said he enjoys seeing what the new crop of Bulldogs look like.

"It's always an exciting time to see who's coming in and meet the new people to the Bulldog family," Selway said.
...

The Bulldogs will again hold separate practices for rookies and veterans today, this time in half pads, before joining everyone together for a full team practice at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25.

Redlands will go full pads on Thursday, Aug. 26, and alternate between single-day practices and two-a-days through the first week of September.

In this family would Selway be classified as the Great Uncle, Grand-Pop, or Step Dad to the rookies? And in that case what does that make Maynard?

I believe the Bulldog's summer camp begins today, anyone else have updates on their respective team's summer camp? Any outrageous numbers? I know Coach Maynard like to bring between 150 to 200 potential players in...

Flight?? I was looking forward to seeing the famed RV roll up. But ya - if you can somehow check a big jug full of flamable liquid onto the plane we would welcome that with open arms.

We would also welcome leaving behind "rocket boy" to rest up for conference games.

That's just downright silly...the Kingsmen would feel really bad losing to our backup QB.....   ;D

I think its good that the only thing you guys can knock on Selway is his age, if his game was bad, you guys would focus on that...So I think Selway and I will take each "age" insult as a compliment...So thanks haha

Mr. Bob-
I think your the only one in the SCIAC who actually has an AARP card....
But thanks for the heads up I'll be sure to look into it when I am 50...

In the words of Mr. Bob.....

"Eyewitness account from Ted Runner Stadium,"

The Bulldogs look great during their first official intra-squad scrimmage. Selway looked sharp as did the receivers. I was most impressed with the O-line however. They have size, strength and athleticism. I hope they click and stay injury free....

The defense is young and hungry.
Each player, I thought, had a sense of urgency that permeated throughout the team. They still have a ways to go but with some hard work they will get to top form. No doubt about it.

I wish all SCIAC players a fun and injury free season!

Go Bulldogs!
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.
