Perhaps having their head coach in limbo was the difference.

Gray Fox

Yes, and he also coaches special teams.  His absence really showed there.

Menlo takes out Oxy with a dominant win...Next on their platter will be Chapman Panthers who will play Occidental later in the season :o

Can the Panthers rebound from their losing season last year and post a winning season with 2 NAIA opponents and 7 games with SCIAC teams  ???
This... is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.  "There are three types of baseball players: those who make things happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened."

Yeah, Menlo vs. Chapman is the highlight of the season for SCIAC fans. I think all of us had that game circled on our calendars.

OxyBob must be a little touchy these days with Oxy's loss and the coaching issues.

Chapman does play 7 of its 9 games with the SCIAC  and who really knows what will happen in those games. Recent history does not bode well for Chapman... I dont expect SCIAC fans to acknowledge Chapman in anyway but check the SCIAC scoreboard for the last 7 weeks and guess what Chapman's name will be there against a SCIAC team.

Here are some images from last night's bruising loss to Menlo:

Reiterating some previous comments on the game, Menlo looked huge up front.  Regarding the comment that

Though not a SCIAC team Chapman plays 7 of its 9 scheduled games with SCIAC opponents

Wait, so let me get this straight: Chapman plays 7 of its 9 games against the SCIAC. Is that right? So 2 of its 9 games are not against the SCIAC, but the other 7 are against the SCIAC. If I understand you, Chapman plays 7 of it's 9 games against the SCIAC, correct?

When are you Chapman guys going to get it? Chapman's not in the SCIAC. Chapman's never going to be in the SCIAC. No one in the SCIAC is a rival of Chapman. No one in the SCIAC gives a rat's patootie about Chapman. You're a bus ride; you're schedule filler.

OxyBob,

You might want to tone that Chapman talk down.  From my way of seeing things if you don't keep Chapman interested and they would leave to go play other teams won't that leave you a game short? Won't that hurt your chances to stay in D3?  I don't know all of the answers but seems with only playing 9 games in a season where would you get another opponent in D3 to give you a 9th game? I am not trying to stir your pot just curious to your thoughts if Chapman picked up their toys and did go play elsewhere.

OxyBob,

You are partially right about CU being filler to the various SCIAC teams....all except Oxy in basketball.

But, think about it, it is a one game filler for SCIAC football teams, but a 7 game filler for CU. I guess it is better than SCIAC teams playing each other more than once in a season!

On another note, I caught the CMS scrimmage again that Orange County Independent University up at CMS. CMS won't challenge for the league
automatic playoff berth, but they have a good sized roster, are a quick determined group of student athletes that don't give up. The defense showed signs of improvement, they have a reliable running back and the QB scrambled for a couple of nice gains, while throwing some long gainers.

On another note, the chain gang was made up of basketball players who are lookiing forward to their second game of the season against that Independent school down in Orange County. Should be a good game, like both games last year. It was really hot at noon time yesterday. CMS plays at home against CMS in an afternoon game. Hope both teams have a deep roster, as the temperatures will probably be soaring.

DutchFan 2004,

OxyBob could care less about Chapman picking up and moving on. Oxy could always schedule Pacific, L&C or play Pudget Sound twice. Heck, maybe they could schedule the American Sports Institude out in San Bernardino, or play flag football against La Sierra. Oh, I wonder if they would schedule another NAIA game after losing to Menlo....maybe Azusa Pacific for starters. Anyway, I don't think the "Grand Master" speaks for all of Oxy.

Bob, your guys played a decent game in spots last night, considering the coaching situation and the fact that there a some guys that are still learning the system. Your defense played good in spots. You had some good breakaways, and it looks like you will be a strong passing team again. I was surprised though that Oxy didn't capitalize more on Menlo's weak kicking game. Just be happy, it was good experience and doesn't count against your quest for the automatic bid. Oxy got some lemons last night, hopefully they wll make some lemonade.

Gray Fox

The SCIAC used to schedule one team twice per year with each game counting as a half win/loss.  So they are really doing Chapman a favor. :P

Except in football, the decision to schedule Chapman, or any other school, is made by each individual team. Most SCIAC schools schedule CU in most sports. In some cases SCIAC schools schedule a home and home series. Most schools realize that, especially where CU has a strong team (like baseball), playing CU helps their strength of schedule. Money is also a factor in scheduling, and is becoming even more a factor.

Favor...when two local teams play each other, they are saving money. That is a priority over saving money. I think you will see Southern California teams scheduling more non-D3 teams from the local area even more. It is all about the money.
