Except in football, the decision to schedule Chapman, or any other school, is made by each individual team. Most SCIAC schools schedule CU in most sports. In some cases SCIAC schools schedule a home and home series. Most schools realize that, especially where CU has a strong team (like baseball), playing CU helps their strength of schedule. Money is also a factor in scheduling, and is becoming even more a factor.

Favor...when two local teams play each other, they are saving money. That is a priority over saving money. I think you will see Southern California teams scheduling more non-D3 teams from the local area even more. It is all about the money.
I can't wait until USC schedules Chapman.  Kiffin needs the win, and it's a good "money game" for the Panthers.

Would't be much of a contest as we only have around 20 students in our pep band.

I don't know if Chapman as a D3 team could play a pro team like USC, where players are reportedly paid. I would have to look up the rule.

Note: Chapman did have a  basketball money game in Mississippi when they were D2 and Boyd had coached there.

Cheers!

P.S. I think UCLA needs a win also.

Here are some images from last night's bruising loss to Menlo:

Reiterating some previous comments on the game, Menlo looked huge up front.  Regarding the comment that

Perhaps having their head coach in limbo was the difference.

. . . note the prominence of the "DW" wrist bands in just about every photo.

I'm "assuming" (Which is always dangerous on these boards) that you "Oxy Fan" took these photos.  Great Job.  The team is lucky to have you.  Picture DSC #7053 .........awesome picture!

GHC, in answer to your question, let me quote my good friend GHC:

Article on Redlands defense. Note that Ian Sluss has left the team which is a huge loss for the defense. He has started at middle linebacker from day one he set foot on campus as a freshmen, which is very rare to see.

Thanks jdD3FBfan for the compliment.  Oxy doesn't do me any favors to help with the photos . . . between the lights (or lack of them) and the contrast between Oxy's all black home uniforms and most teams all white away unis  . . . it is hell talking photos at Patterson Field.

Chapman has already played and beat USC 22-9 at Ernie Chapman Field where the Panthers football teams play their home games.

Maybe USC can schedule to play the Sagehens for some easy local wins. Pomona's football team played USC 20 times, with a 4-12-4 overall record.

Although I love the "banter" between everyone on the boards regarding the SIAC, I just wanna say to ALL the athletes at Chapman........The fact that you are NOT a member of SIAC doesn't take away from who you are as students athletes.  I know you work just as hard on and off the field as the Oxy, CLU and Redlands athletes.  So continue to do what you love, have fun, enjoy your college experience and who cares what "League or Conference or Division" you do it in!  Loved the video, great camera/editing work!

"With the graduation of Josh Cunningham and Scott Garner, and the fact that sophomore standout Ian Sluss had to leave the team for personal reasons, Mariani will have to break in three new starters.
"We're still trying to piece things together," said Mariani, whose job only got harder when potential starter Cameron Mann was lost for the season with a torn ACL.

Mariani said Antonio Santini, Jordan Garcia and Justin Butler are currently the front-runners for the starting jobs. "

WOW sounds like a lot happening with the defense already! I guess we'll find out how well "THEY'VE BEEN PIECED TOGETHER" on Saturday morning at ETBU!  It is always sad when a player is "out for the season" especially when the season hasn't even begun yet!  ???

Ian leaving is a huge loss (personal reasons)?  R we keeping this under tight wraps like Coach DW's suspension? :D

Good luck to everyone in their games this weekend.  I wish I could be every where at once and see everyone play, but this weekend I'm stuck at work listening to the Redlands game on the radio..............not quite the same!

Lot to touch on....

Oxy Bob- We love to hate you....with that said, I will be more than happy to buy you a drink at Redlands Homecoming game on Oct. 23rd

Nihon- where are you sir? I haven't heard any reasons for the Menlo loss?

Gray Fox- I wish I could but its a bit outside of my travel budget!

The Ian Sluss situation- Ian is a phenomenal middle backer that we all thought, as a freshmen, could have played on any D1 team. The main reason he came to Redlands, I think, was because of the recruiting genius of Vinny Fazio. Since the Fazio's left, I think Ian decided he didn't have any sort of obligation to stay at Redlands and therefore, decided to pursue a D1 AA opportunity at Portland State. To my knowledge he is sitting this year out, and will play for them next year...which is in compliance with NCAA rules when you transfer up a division.

The Bulldog Defense- Coach Mariani does have his hands full, but he is one of the few individuals to have won a CIF championship as a player and coach. He's been in the coaching business for over 20 years. I know he will do his best, but sometimes players need to take it upon themselves to exceed expectations....

Cameron Mann, here is a guy who took a year off to get healthy...he tore his MCL and ACL during the 2008 season, before that he broke a rib or leg while camping during the summer....He was in an accident that sidelined him for his initial season at UofR, much respect for that man, he has overcome adversity during each season...I hope he gets better...

To the Board- Anyone going to the USC Virgina game this weekend?

Good luck to all the teams playing this weekend, stay healthy....Go Bulldogs!
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.

I'll go out on a limb and answer for Nihon . . . because Menlo scored more points.  They were bigger on the line (both ways), and got a crucial INT at a key moment that took away the opportunity for a Tiger victory.

I'll try and go a bit more in depth than my man ST:

First and foremost was special teams.  Coach Widolff prides himself on consistently having the best all-around special teams units in the SCIAC year-in and year-out.  It's a shame he won't be around to shape them up for a while.  I counted a blocked punt, shanked punt, botched fg snap, and sub-par kickoff coverage.  In addition, kickoff duties usually go to Josh Mun, but he hurt his leg a bit after the first kickoff, so Connor Smith had to replace him, resulting in shorter kickoffs, as Connor is more of a fg guy.  Once the frosh punter settled down he had a couple of good ones.

Next, Offense.  A few big plays, but no rhythm.  The timing looked way off with the receivers.  (Edit:  This will happen when you lose your top 6-7 WRs from last year).  As a result the little 5,7,10 yd short passes that the spread offense thrives off of were falling incomplete.  The run game actually looked decent with "Nasty" back and the O-line more experienced.  With the short passing game there to provide more continuity, I expect the offense to make leaps and bounds in coming games.

Defense.  For the most part, they were victims of bad field position and no rest.  Not terrible considering the pick six and last minute essentially meaningless TD running up the score.  Once Jim Hildensperger left early with an injury, the big Menlo O-line started gashing Oxy for 5-7yd runs up the middle with their RB who was crazy fast.  Usually Jim and Alex (Werth) both command double teams which obviously frees up the rest of the defense.  With Jim back and the (much) smaller SCIAC O-lines, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that doesn't happen again.  Saw some encouraging plays from the defensive backfield.
