I think Cal Luth will be a lot like Occidental or Redlands a year or 3 ago....very tough, especially on their home field.

Stoonk here:----Hey Bluenote-----will you be at CLU/LINFIELD GAME? Let me know so not to waste time looking for you !

Hey stoonk....I PM'ed you earlier....

I don't have any idea about who's going to win the CLU-Linfield game* but if today's article in the Ventura County Star is any indication, the Kingsmen don't lack for confidence, especially Jordan Barta, who was slinging the cliches like nobody's business:

QuoteAs Barta ponders being part of the final senior class to chew up Mount Clef's grass, he looks across the field to the old scoreboard in the corner. Hanging underneath is a banner celebrating CLU's lone national title.

"It would be great to leave something over there to be remembered by," Barta said. "If we are going out, we might as well go out big."

More from Barta:

Quote"We can bring the house."
"We meshed fast. It only took us a couple of days."
"Everyone likes everyone and we are always going hard."
"If we are dogging it at practice, all it takes is one word and everyone starts flying around again."
"If we do all the right things, which we should, we have all the right people to win the SCIAC."
"That is always our top priority. From there, it's just taking each playoff game one at a time to try to take that national championship."

Not to be outdone in the triteness department, head coach Ben McEnroe added his own banal analysis:

On his team:

Quote"I think we met the goal we had as a staff coming out of last season."
"We are bigger and more physical on the offensive and defensive fronts, and we have shown great strides in our ability to run the ball and protect the quarterback.
"I feel really good about those things."

On his quarterback Jake Laudenslayer:

Quote
"About four to five days into camp you started to see Jake pull ahead with his completion percentage, decision making and processing checks and adjustments at the line of scrimmage."
"He just started to separate himself from the pack and has really shown a lot of growth."
"I am really happy with that position right now."

Nice to know that McEnroe's really happy and feels really good.

Laudenslayer offered these hackneyed comments:

Quote"I think we have the potential to be real dynamic and explosive."
"We have speed at the receiver position and some good running backs and our line up front has a lot of returners."
"I am excited about how much we have to offer."

I am looking forward to seeing the game at Mt. Clef this Saturday, because with all of that fertilizer being spread around, the field must be as green as ever.

I would love to compare/contrast this to a write up featuring quotes from Oxy's head coach so far this season but for some reason I can't seem to find any...

K4,
That was a very low blow. Better pray extra hard for a Ca Lu win this weekend, or starting after the final horn you will be paying the price.

Bulletin board material isn't always the best way to go.

PS Although I am enjoyiing the "smack" talk!

Just looking forward to solid execution, and competing with possibly the best team in the nation this year. I may be praying ... to the porcelin throne that night after too much celebration should the LU pull out the upset, is that what you meant?

I obviously don't take things too seriously ... Smack talk is all it is, just having some fun. Setting myself up for some battering later on is part of it all unfortunetely, but why not?? All in good fun.

I have plenty of stories I could tell about Jordan Barta from back in my playing days when he was a Freshman that would only add solidity to OB's rant (I will be the first to admit that the cliches were clear and present), but I decided to instead try to defer that in regards to keeping my guys out of the light of embarrasement from one of their own :D

Oxy is a great team and program, with a great coaching staff. They will bounce back like nothing happened - everyone knows that. Gotta take advantage of when they do at least one thing wrong...

Looking forward to Saturday.

That must be one complex defense.

Will Oxy rebound from last weeks loss and get a win over football powerhouse in the Northwest UPS who won last week ?
This... is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.  "There are three types of baseball players: those who make things happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened."

My favorite headline of the week comes from the Oxy website re last week's loss to Menlo:

QuoteTigers' triumph falls short in season opener

That reminds me of then-LA Dodgers manager Jim Tracy's legendary analysis after the 2003 season: "We didn't fail. We just didn't succeed as much as we'd have liked."

It will take "solid execution, and competing with possibly the best team in the nation this year" in order to get the result as predicted "CLU - 27, Linfield - 24".

"backpedaling"... The only thing that comes to mind is how much our wide receiving core has enjoyed blowing by backpeddaling Oxy DB's into the endzone, that was always a good time for sure.  :o
