Who's their other sixth-year senior? Mentioned in the story that Selway was playing with one other member of his freshman class.

I was going to say Ted Runner.

Tobiason and Selway will be able to commiserate when they become the first UR players to lose to Oxy six times.

Only two SCIAC teams in action this week:

Linfield (0-1) @ La Verne (0-1) 12:30 p.m.
Whittier (0-1) @ Puget Sound (1-1) 1:00 p.m.

This... is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.  "There are three types of baseball players: those who make things happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened."

As for last week's Whittier game at Citrus -- The Poets have some skill.  The numbers may not show it, but Sausau did well.  He burned APU's corners a few times with some great throws.  The o-line needs help.  They didn't offer Sausau much time and he was under the gun all night.  Tillman is good -- very good at running back.  He didn't have holes but he created opportunities.  He earned all his yards with great cutbacks and speed.  He's going to have a great season.  It's hard to judge the defense against that APU offense.  Whittier won't see another offense like that this year.  The transfers are a definite help.  Whittier is a lock for at least four wins this year, maybe five.  If they get a few breaks along they way, six wins is not out of the question.

On a side note, Whittier's offensive coordinator needs help, or needs to be fired.  He is an embarrassment to the school.  Everyone in the stands could hear his comments from the press box.  Either he's 12 years old or he has some social disorders that need to be addressed by the college's administration.

Does Laverne have a mess hall? or is it more like a cafeteria?

They have a dining hall. Not sure when it's open. There's a good snack bar at the field. They usually have tasty grilled carne asada tacos. Off campus I suggest T. Phillips on D Street for a beer and a sandwich.

That was a long two weeks (consecutive byes should be illegal).  For those of you heading out to Patterson Field this Saturday for the annual "Battle for the Shoes" we will have available a limited number of "Free Widolff" t-shirts for sale at $20. The t-shirts are tastefully done in a style only DW could appreciate--solid black with solid white lettering (OK, my wife could not resist adding a tiger paw print on one of the sleeves).  Proceeds will go towards the team's post game meal.

To pick up a t-shirt, come by our pre-game tailgate.  Just look for the Airstream in the small parking lot next to Bell Field.  We'll be there early (smoking ribs for the tailgate).

Two possible "conference championships" on the west coast this week with CLU @ Redlands, and Willamette @ Linfield.

Either some clarity will be brought to the SCIAC/NWC shuffle so far or everyone will be more confused that we are now, on how these conferences and prospective playoff spots are going to boil out.

What I would give to play another big game at the Runner.

I don't think anybody will be confused after this weeks games--but it doesn't mean they will be definite deciders either.  The winner of the SCIAC game will still have to play Oxy and get by the other conference "trap games" and the winner of the NWC game will have to beat PLU and get by the other teams but whoever wins these games will be in the driver seat to take their conference for sure.
Go Cats!
