It surprises me that anyone is surprised by this. It was made apparent CLU's strategy in order to compete with the likes of Linfield as early as the first press release after the playoff loss last November, and was re-iterated countless times ... that in order for CLU to remain at the top of the SCIAC and compete nationally they needed more SIZE and guys that could come in and play right away (AKA qualified transfers).

The fact that we brought in the volume of transfers that we did might be surprising, as well as how to game plan for a team with an almost entirely new lineup ... but it was a strategy that was far from secret to any opponent.

I'm confident that the returning players and coaches have instilled the fire towards Redlands into the transfers, just as they did the need for revenge on Linfield. Excited to see it play out.

Also really looking forward to witnessing first hand the signature Redlands Pre-Game routine for 2010. They have had very strong routines in the past few seasons with exceptionally complicated barking effects, along with showing off muscle tone that is rarely seen at the collegiate level. I would anticipate numerous defensive specialists to have their shirts pulled up as a show of their off season ab work. Maybe they really mixed it up and threw in some Linebackers twirling batons, or possibly some of the gargantuan running backs will tap dance (They are known for strong choreography). Either way look for true "tough guy" entertainment out there on the field for early outs. they didn't get to the top of the warm-up rankings by holding back that is for sure...

We Bulldogs pride our offseason ab workout!
Especially our Yoga routines! Definitely something we all pride ourselves in.

In terms of our pre-game routine, don't knock it till you try it :)

Sadly I never had abs or choreography skills but maybe these guys can convince you Redlands is the place to be: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epRY3eZLQSc

If you are going to be out in Redlands early, I will most likely be tailgating at the dirt lot. I'll be glad to meet any former players and parents to discuss why a repeat of 2006 in the Runner is going to happen  ;)

Looking forward to seeing a good game at Redlands this week as both teams come off of a bye week. Please... someone tell me it is not hot in Redlands like it is in Thousand Oaks. It is up to 111 today in TO. That could cause a problem for the players from CLU.

Redlands was not much cooler today but temps should be in the 90's later this week...

The Redlands heckler endzone??? I don't own a lawn chair but depending on if there is a breeze blowing that area might be a money spot to watch the game.

Hopefully the 7pm start will help knock down the heat... A day game might have been unsafe right now.

From the Highland Community News:

QuoteThe University of Redlands made it 2-0 after a solid thumping over visiting Whitworth (Wash.) College on Saturday night – 23-7. Running back Daylon Swedlow, who is from nearby Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World, smashed for over 100 yards.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, await the Oct. 23 matchup with Occidental College. It doesn't seem to matter how good Redlands' team is from year to year; Oxy always seems a half step ahead in one way or another.

Regardless of Oxy's relative domination over the years, that Oct. 23 matchup is a must-see if you're a local college football fan.
...

After a bye week, Redlands gets an important home game against Cal Lutheran University (Oct. 2). That, too, could play out in the race toward a conference title/NCAA playoff berth. The Kingsmen are another top player in the field.

Relative domination is a somewhat apposite term. Total, complete, utter domination would be a better description.

Nice of them to mention CLU.

Hey, don't knock TAP & TWIRLING!  Since my kid has an AC Joint injury at least he can still be part of the game (The shoulder injury may keep him from participating in hitting or tackling drills, but he can still perform a mean DAWG PRE-GAME TAP)!   ;)

I also hear it will be 90 degrees during the day and a beautiful low temperature of 60 at night!  I'd love to see the temperature drop to 60 by game time, LOL!  After living in Cali for 25 years, I still can't get used to watching football without sleet, snow or hail!  Makes me feel like we should be watching water polo or something!

This will be the first game I've been able to make it to this year! Although the kid may only be "dancing" it's one of those games I don't want to miss!  Good luck to BOTH teams.  I hope it is a CLOSE & EXCITING game until the very last second in OVERTIME........(and no injuries of course)! ;)

GO DAWGS!

Redland's doesn't seem to have but maybe a "few" transfers on their roster.  Do you think this is the new direction for SCIAC teams?  Since OXY seems to be the other "power house" do they have a history of recruiting transfers into their program?  I don't know the history of the schools like everyone else, so I was just curious if this is going to be a new trend in order to keep up with the rest of the "world" so to say!!!!!!!!! ???  Just an "inquiring mind" who wants to know!

I bring it up, sure, because I was a Junior College transfer myself.

"It's the economy, %&#$^."

Yes, we will see more and more Community College transfers because the first two years of college are still somewhat affordable in California.

Oxy usually brings in a small number of transfers, probably 5 or less in any given year.  RB Jason Haller and QB Andy Collins are a couple of examples of recent transfers who contributed in a big way.  I think the coaches and the school are very careful to bring in players who will mesh well with the team's mentality and the school's overall philosophy.  In my opinion, and my opinion only mind you, I sincerely doubt Oxy would ever attempt to bring in a group as large as CLU, for various reasons.  There's also the fact that Oxy is more difficult to get into, either as a transfer or straight out of high school (not trying to start an argument or say Oxy is better etc., it's just a fact).  It's the same reason why our recruiting classes are invariably smaller than the other two of the "SCIAC Big Three" year in and year out.

CLUkingsmen12

CLU has started adding more transfers within the last few years mainly to get bigger. We were significantly smaller then Linfield last year during the playoffs, and both Oxy and Redlands were bigger then us when I played at CLU.

It is very difficult to find transfers who will mesh with the team and buy in to the D3 game. In my experience, it has taken transfers awhile to realize that we play a team game and are not looking for the "look at me" guys. The transfers that have the wrong mentality usually left the team because they didn't like the "team first" mentality.

K4.. I will se eyou on Saturday. Hopefully Redlands doesn't have any CLU-PO type security. Those guys really ruin the pregame entertainment.

It's infinitely easier for CLU to bring in as many JC transfers as they want. It's just a fact.
