Tailgating at the UofR takes place in the dirt lot next to the West Endzone or in the Parking lot to the south of the Serrao Gateway, home side entrance, in the Chapel Parking lot.  The Campus safety at Redlands is usually very accommodating as long as there is no blatant underage drinking or people being idiots.  Some are even knowledgeable about Bulldog football.  Have fun and Go DAWGS!

I bring it up, sure, because I was a Junior College transfer myself.

"It's the economy, %&#$^."

Yes, we will see more and more Community College transfers because the first two years of college are still somewhat affordable in California.

More JC transfers could increase in the future significantly into the D3 private schools. With huge jobs losses and no near term turnaround, many can no longer afford the 4 years of school at a SCIAC school. Also the massive student debt many students are accumulating through loans is also could impact attendance at SCIAC schools too.

April 1, 2008:

QuoteOccidental College received almost 13 applications for every opening in the Class of 2012, setting a new record for the number of applications received.

Some 5,789 students submitted applications to Occidental for 455 spaces this year, an increase of 10 percent over last year's total and up a remarkable 127 percent over the past decade.

March 13, 2009:

QuoteApplications for admission to Occidental College have topped 6,000 for the first time ever, setting a new record for the 11th time in 12 years.

Some 6,010 students submitted applications for one of 465 spaces in the Class of 2013, an increase of 4 percent over last year's total.

Occidental Magazine, Summer, 2010:

QuoteApplications to Occidental fell just short of last year's record, with 5,882 high school seniors applying for admission.

Nice call there, as usual.

Looking forward to seeing a good game at Redlands this week as both teams come off of a bye week. Please... someone tell me it is not hot in Redlands like it is in Thousand Oaks. It is up to 111 today in TO. That could cause a problem for the players from CLU.

CLUkingsmen12-----u be "cornfusing" me as to where u "stay". I read your posts on OAC  about  attending the Mighty Mount Union Purple Raiders games in  Alliance Ohio and was guessing you lived in Ohio. Then I see you posting about attending California Lutheran Kingsmen games in the great city of Thousand Oaks Ca.Do u have a private jet that takes you back and forth from Ohio to California? I be looking for u in Redlands this weekend ---and HEY be careful not to get barked at and  bitten by a Bulldog!

There's also the fact that Oxy is more difficult to get into, either as a transfer or straight out of high school (not trying to start an argument or say Oxy is better etc., it's just a fact).

It's infinitely easier for CLU to bring in as many JC transfers as they want. It's just a fact.

Agreed – academic standards can definitely be an advantage (depending on how you look at it). It is an advantage to bring in game ready, mature players for action in the first game of the season. I don't care how big or good you were in high school, even coming into a D3 school is humbling and it it rare for a Freshman to catch up to the new speed of the game early in the season.

The drawback obviously is the faster turnover (1-2 years) which can result in a constant re-up of new transfers, and in the end can take away from the foundation of 4 year "program first" type guys that you can only get from incoming freshman players that buy into the team for the long haul. The load of transfers at CLU started to heavy around my sophmore year, and has increased since. The trick, and all the CLU guys have seen this, is that it is not the transfers that are important; it is the QUALIFIED transfers that can really make a difference. We had plenty of transfers that came in from big school and could bench press the world but wouldn't make it happen on the field.

Bringing in a load of 21-26 year old men doesn't guarantee a winning group (Just ask Whittier, I would put them on the downside of the "transfer game" – low quality, no character guys that brought their entire team down as a result). I think Cal Lu has found a balance of being able to bring in high impact transfers, but that are into the program and want to be a part of the winning tradition.

I don't foresee CLU keeping up with this high number of transfers every year moving forward. They had to make quick changes to compete NOW, and they did that – but I think it was more of a quick fix than a philosophy for the future. Either way Coach Mac is a smart dude and an honest dude – he doesn't sell a dream to get guys to come play and I think that attracts players that want to be a part of the program. Accompanied with a new stadium, a streak of good years in the SCIAC, and current players that can vouch for the cause to recruits, I think that CLU is on the right track.

The Lu better not take this rivalry lightly ... BEAT REDLANDS ... And don't wear red on Redlands week! My red ties are in the back of the closet.

Former ALL STAR/ALL WORLD safety (as well as CLU chess and choir team captain) Garett Redd even went as far as to change his last name on facebook for the week of the Redlands game... Fun stuff, hope the team is hyped.

What are we suppossed to do then??? Sounds tough to accomodate, I mean these are CLU fans we are talking about...

Sounds like you and I are supposed to go to the dirt lot and let the breeze and Redlands ATVs do donuts around us while we eat Subway.
I'll see you there wearing neither Purple nor maroon, but a beige 2004 National Championship hat that is very ripe.

Whittier (1-1) @ Oxy (1-1), Saturday, Oct. 2

103rd meeting between the Poets and the Tigers stretching back to 1895. Since 1946 the schools have played for a pair of bronzed cleats, worn by 1940 Whittier graduate Myron Claxton, in the Battle for the Shoes. Oxy's won 8 of the last 10.

Whittier's coming off a 6-OT win against Puget Sound. Oxy's had two weeks off since beating the Loggers on Sept. 11.

If you can't be at the game then Craig Dunkin & Co. will have the game live on oxybroadcast.com.

It's about time some of these schools realize that they can't just keep charging whatever the heck they want and expect people to pay it.  Ask most current what a four-year degree gets you these days and the answer is either (1) a nice room at your parents' house or (2) the ability to fold clothes at the Gap.

Cost of attendance(Tuition, Room/Board etc) ranges form 45K to 57K at SCIAC Schools PER YEAR..Thats alot of money for football team roster

Not sure what it's like in SoCal, but many eastern private lib art schools have as much as 70% of students on fin aid...save for many NESCAC institutions (most kids who go there don't even apply for aid - that's a fact).

I don't know the endowments of places like Oxy, etc. but assume its up there with the best in the country given its consistent ranking in USNWR which weighs a LOT on size of endowment....

I think you have us confused with people who went to state schools.

Here is reminder of what happened at the end of last years game.

. . . .

Another way to check on the makeup of the kids attending the school is to go to the student parking lot and count the number of expensive (or new) cars in it.   :)
