CMS' Eric and Scott Yingling happy to share field

For Eric and Scott Yingling, time away from the football field made them appreciate the sport even more.

The brothers play for a Claremont-Mudd- Scripps squad that's off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2002, when it won the first seven games. Scott had his collegiate career derailed for two years by injuries, while Eric had his put on hold by four years in the Marines, including a 10-month deployment to Iraq.

This is the last year they'll get to play together, so they're enjoying this season even more. The team's success adds another dimension to the experience, but the Stags (4-0, 1-0) face a stiff test Saturday when they take on the University of Redlands (3-1, 1-1) in a 7 p.m. showdown at Ted Runner Stadium.

For a while it looked like both might opt for military service. Scott graduated from high school in 2005 and was recruited heavily by the Naval Academy. He spent a year at a naval prep school, then another in a trade school before deciding it wasn't for him.

Eric graduated high school in 2004 and was already into his military career, something he hasn't ruled out going back to when his education at CMS is finished. He first thought about the military his junior year and was leaning more toward the Army at that time. He also talked with the Marines. When that branch called him back a year later, he decided that was the path to take.

Eric was based out of Camp Pendleton, 38 miles north of San Diego. In December 2005 he was deployed to the city of Fallujah, 40 miles west of Baghdad.

I'm getting old and my brain doesn't always send the proper signals to my fingers or maybe my fingers just can't keep up with the speed of my brain!
