QuoteCLU football player arrested in Ventura bar scuffle
Wide receiver suspected of officer assault

A California Lutheran University football player was one of two men arrested after a large fight early Sunday morning in downtown Ventura.

Wide receiver Clinton Panton Jr., 24, of Oxnard was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer after a fight outside the Karma Lounge at 281 W. Main Street around 1:50 a.m.

Court records reveal this is not Panton's first brush with the law.
...

When police told other patrons of the bar to leave, some, allegedly including Panton, became violent and refused to leave the area, according to the report.

Police said when Panton was told to leave, he adopted a fighting stance against the officers and flicked his lit cigarette at one of the officers, hitting him in the face just below his eye.

When officers told Panton he was under arrest on suspicion of battery on a police officer, he tried to run away and police gave chase, according to the report.

When caught, Panton allegedly fought violently and police had to use a Taser to subdue him and place him in handcuffs, even as he continued to struggle, according to the report.
...

Panton, who is 6 feet tall and weighs 185 pounds, graduated from Hueneme High in 2004 and played football and basketball and ran track for the Vikings.

He attended Ventura College in 2004-07 and was a member of the football and track teams.

He has been at CLU for the past two years but has not appeared in any games for the Kingsmen.
...

A search of court records revealed that Panton was convicted in August of 2008 for felony transportation of a controlled substance and of being armed during that offense. The incident took place in Oxnard in April of 2008, according to records.

"History is not on the side of the Bulldogs. In coach Mike Maynard's 20 years the committee has not taken a second-place team out of the SCIAC.

The Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1) are second behind No. 22 Cal Lutheran (6-1, 5-0) and lost the head-to-head meeting 24-22.

What would weigh in the Bulldogs' favor would be the current economic climate which makes it logical for the committee to give Redlands the berth and a first-round playoff rematch with Cal Lutheran because it's just a bus ride rather than a plane trip for another team.

"It wouldn't seem likely given history, but it makes sense from an economic standpoint," Maynard said. "We're going to go out and do our job and hopefully convince them that we're worthy."

We can't judge the entire "team's character" by one bad seed (drug/weapons charge), but I would question the "admissions/coaching staff" as to why a CONVICTED FELON
would be allowed on the team!  I believe someone mentioned he was a transfer student (but the article says he hasn't played in a single game in two years)!  Was he recruited from Prison  ;)

Also, there are always two sides to every story.........Sometimes police officers have enormous chips on their shoulders that get in the way of their own judgement.  I've seen "MINOR" incidents turn into "MAJOR" news stories over something as simple as looking at an officer "wrong" and just because an officer puts something in a "report" does not make it true.  My son did a project on comparing "911" tapes to actual police reports.............you'd be amazed on the findings!  I am not SUPPORTING anything this kid MAY have done, but the entire team should not be judge!  Now judging the admissions office or the coaching staff may be another story!

Guess that's what you get when you adopt a "win now, pay later" philosophy.  Feel bad for dudes like K4 that put in 4 years into a program to only have a guy like this shine a bad light on the program.  But that was the coaches decision to bring in a guy like this.  However, this guy wasn't a difference maker for CLU so it's probably good he's gone.

He should never been allowed into the school or on the team with that type of conviction(Felon with controlled substance and being armed).  The rest of the school and team is not being judged by this single individual.

Hmm . . . have to disagree . . . rightly, or wrongly, CLU will likely be judged by many parents of prospective students who may well consider the recruiting and admission of that student when deciding whether their little future gridiron great should choose CLU over Redlands or Chapman or PLU or Linfield . . . or . . . . might want little "FGG" to enroll somewhere (and pay tuition somewhere) without teammates with such colorful backgrounds.

Not saying right, wrong or otherwise . . . just what is.

Agreed. Perception is reality to many. Guilt by association these days.

Dear Sabretooth:

I don't think CLU should be judged by the actions of Clinton Panton. That just isn't fair.
