Chris Erskine's column about CLU-Redlands and D-III football in today's Los Angeles Times:

Looking for football love in all the right places

PC already has it up on the d3football.com front page.

Plus, even though they don't play football, Caltech got some press in the Times, too:

Caltech ranked as world's top research university

Yes, I am aware that CIT beat Oxy in basketball. Don't remind me.

Eric will start getting more looks I bet. Clu has 4-5 really good rec., getting everyone involved seems to be the problem, but this may have changed in the 2nd half of sat. game.8 different rec. touched the ball.Redlands really had no answer for the passing game after half time,Ilook for more of this in weeks to come. This will also help to free Mosier to have some good games. The scoring drives we have had this year seem tobe10-12 play drives and not so explosive,i kinda like that approach.

Everyone here is right... CLU's WR core is the best I have seen in a long time (I am not ashamed to admit that  ;) ). top to bottom solid, especially when you consider that Chambers has been playing a lot in the slot. BUT I will continue to gripe about Rogers until he is getting deep balls thrown to him every other drive.

Sweeny is now the nation's (all divisions) top rusher  :o ... Pretty impressive. IF he stays on pace against a good Redlands D this week I may be eating my own words from a few posts back... this will be a real test to see if it is all Sweeny, or a product of his # of carries so far. Interesting stat: he hasn't had a carry over 25 yards yet this year ... Regardless I can't look at his numbers without thinking about Maki catching 15-20 passes a game for 4 straight years.

Just think how good a couple of them would be if the made EVERY practice?
Service to others is the rent you pay while your time on Earth.

cludad

And what couple might this be?I may be wrong, but i bet alot of players do not attend EVERY practice (school ,injury, treatments for injuries, sick..).

I don't know a program that would not make exceptions however there is a difference.  In this instance it is the difference from making lame excuses or just not showing up.

I doubt that calling Sweeney the best back in the SCIAC is very bold.  I've seen both teams play, and I'm quite comfortable predicting what those numbers would look like if you put Sweeney behind CLC's line and Chambers behind Pomona's.

I am also comfortable thinking that anyone who gets the ball 40 times a game is going to put up big numbers.  It's a useless argument unless both get the ball the same and are on the same team, which they are not.  Either way, Sweeney has put up some darn good numbers.

Sweeny is the new "guy" for Pomona. Because of their low roster numbers year to year and academic standards - they always have only 1 or 2 "guys" that standout and get ALL of the time with the ball. Caron to Maki encompassed that for the last 4 years ... with them gone Sweeny is their "guy". Not taking away from Pomona or Sweeny - I respect the way they play and carry themselves ... but his stats are going to be inflated because no one else will touch the ball as much as he does. Plug in Mosier or Chambers in that spot and they would likely have the same success if not more just from the sheer number of carries against a lot of sub par SCIAC and non-conference teams.

Saturday's games should be pretty easy to predict except for Chapman vs. CMS.  Gonna be interesting to see if CMS can continue it's campaign to be part of the "Big 4" as they said before their matchup with the LU last year. (CLU 41 CMS 14)

CLU vs Whittier: Whittier throws the ball A LOT.  Should be fun watching their receivers battle two lockdown corners in Villavicencio and Haulcy-Bateman.  Coming over the middle shouldn't be too fun either with Galbreth laying bricks. Whittier also did a bit of talking in the offseason, bulletin board material.  Prediction 38-10 CLU

Redlands and Oxy both win handily.

Whittier always talks, the funny thing is ... no one listens. Look for CLU to drop 50 on them, and Whittier to rack up personal fouls.

As expected, Whittier came out cocky (as they do every year) and got ran all day. It is always good to stomp ####ier and get the young guys a chance to play. I knew we would drop 50 but even I didn't expect this blood bath. Guess that is what happens when you go from a front loaded schedule against top teams in the country to playing Whittier. Keep it rolling!

600+ yards of offense and a shutout for the Defense??? Oh ya.

The bad news:  Stags drive comes up 6 inches short at the Chapman 3 with 50 seconds left.  The good news: the most entertaining play-by-play I've ever heard, by the Chapman announcing team of Moe and Curly.  Trust me:  If your team is playing down at CU, you OWE it to yourself to stay home (the video quality actually is excellent) and listen to these guys call the game.  You'll never view football the same way.

and Oxy loses to LaVerne????  Lion's and uh....Leopards and Bears, OH MY!

Double-Domer:
I will pass your comments on to the announcing team and the camera operators (all students). They will definitely appreciate the fact that you made them. Thank you and plus K for posting something positive.

CMS is a scrappy team and worked very hard all night. I really thought they would pull it out in the end, but the Chapman "D" came up with some key stops. I was really expecting them to throw over the middle in their last series at least once, to pull our linebackers back.

As I am posting this, the stats have not been emailed out yet. It will be interesting to review them.

But all is not lost for you, as you did pick Wartburg.

Cheers

EDIT: Stats and game write-up available at    chapmanathletics.com
CMS held the ball longer than CU. Stats were pretty even, with CMS dominating iin rushing yards and CU dominating in the passing game. No turnovers, and only a few penalties.

While reviewing the Redlands/Pomona stats, I noticed Pomona's Luke Sweeney had no stats. Does anyone know the reason?

cludad

Hey k-4, how was that for getting eric the ball(35 ypc was pretty good) ;D and also keeping with a CLU tradition 103 yard in penalties :o

Thanks, Dahlby. It's a dark day indeed when the best news for any Luther graduate is that he correctly picked Wartburg to win.

Certainly an interest scrum going on in the bowels of the SCIAC.  Looks like Chapman, CMS, Oxy, LaVerne--and I'd probably put Pomona in there as well, after having seen them play Chapman--are all playing at about the same depth.  I'm frankly stunned a LaVerne squad that put up only 105 yards rushing (and 140 yards passing) against CMS last week could card 321 on the ground against Oxy this week.  Oxy's 65 passes aren't necessarily a surprise, but plainly the 5 turnovers were their doom.  Short version:  On any Saturday, any one of these five teams could beat any of the others.

Should be an interesting battle for third position behind The Elect.

dahlby

Running on one cylinder and doing just enough to win (ala Chapman vs. Witworth, Pomona and CMS) may cut it against everyone except the "ELECT". But, when you finish the season with Cal Lu, then Redlands, it will be a long off-season if you don't get your engine running better. Some of  the non-elect have already gotten their spanking....and I hope that our Panthers have seen what can happen. Chapman has the talent on offense and defense to at least be respectable, but it neeeds to
start scoring on more drives and take some of the pressure off of the defense.

I am waiting for some OXY posters comments regarding their game last night, I couldn't believe the score when I got home last night and brought up the scores on my computer.....
