Having seen both Linfield and Cal Lu both play, I still don't see how Cal Lu lost to them.. My understanding was they had some breakdowns defensively which allowed some explosive run plays, but from a talent perspective Cal Lu was the far superior team, imo.

I'll say this---I'ved watched both CLU and Linfield  several times (all of Linfield's games an all of the CLU ones that have been on video) and both teams have improved greatly from that first game of the season.  In that first game (CLU at Linfield) Linfield was breaking in a new QB and relying heavily on the running game.  That is not the case so much anymore.  CLU displayed some issues in their first few games including a lot of penalties and/or turnovers that killed drives that looked to be heading towards points.  Both teams have good defenses and Linfield has been playing crazy good on special teams of late.  IF these two teams get to rematch in the playoffs it should be a heck of a game.

I saw Linfield when the played La Verne, wonderful facility they have up there by the way, did not come away super impressed with the QB play. I thought their #2 guy probably had more physical talent.. Their #1 guy had a hard time getting the ball to the numbers with any authority and the ball seemed to leave his hand differently on every throw.

To be fair to him, in that game, he suffered a fair share of drops that hindered his numbers, but he didn't jump out at you when I saw him play.

I will also say this about Linfield, they are very well coached, they appear to have complete buy in with their players, and play well with in the principles of their scheme, particularly on defense.

Cal Lu looked more phsyically gifted, more athletic, and they had a ton of depth.. Quite possibly the best pair of athletes at the CB position that I have seen at this level as a pair.

Sorry for the rambling, I am new, and sometimes run on at the keyboard.

LeoFan---welcome to the boards.  I think your QB assessment is fair at least based on where he was at the time you saw him.  He certainly is not as physically talented as some other Linfield QBs but he has improved with each game and even early on made pretty good decisions and stood in well under pressure.  He distributes the ball well and typically makes good reads.

As they say physical talent does not always win out. I had guessed that he played over the other kid because ether he had a better grasp of the offense or had more experience. He may simply move the team better than their #2.. And to also be fair, my sample size is obviously quite small and was early in the year as you say.. He's probably right in the comfort zone this deep in to the season.

Thanks for the insight!

I didn't see either team last year.  This is really my first year observing SCIAC teams. I am actually pretty new to this level of football.  I will say this I really enjoy the D3 level and this league the more I see.. It's made for a very fun year so far for me as a casual observer.

DOC, ill say it,I do not want to go back to linfield for a first round game.Clu needs to get the playoff monkey off its back and good old home cooking should take care of that.To you leofan, linfield has one of the top programs in the nation, they dont rebuild just reload.Clu has the most talented team in awhile and they appear to get better each week.We still manage 10+ penalties a game and i dont see that changing anytime soon :o.ONe game at a time is what our focus is.(we win sat. we win sciac #3 title in a row :))

Well then, injury free this Saturday, cludad.

And, again, I would like to thank La Verne for giving us games the last couple years.

I think at the very least it gave La Verne a glimpse of the type of program they should aspire to be..Whether that's possible or not, I don't know, but in many ways I believe it to be a valuable experience not only for the kids but the staff as well.

Again, I can't say this enough, you guys have a wonderful facility up there, and it's neat to see how much public support you get at your games. Really something special for the D3 level imo. Good luck on the rest of your season.

I can see that with CLU. Looks like they get a nice mix of bouncebacks and local kids out of school. My understanding is they have put a lot of resources in to that program, and that you guys also have a nice brand spanking new facility to play in.

From a talent perspective particularly at the skill positions, CLU is the most talented team I have seen live, thus far.. They have a big physical offensive line, with what appears to be a lot of depth to go with those skill guys. I love the two corners they have on defense, very agressive and very athletic..If they put it all together, i think they could make a run.

Speaking of penalties how many are mental mistakes and how many do you attribute to what i see as "inconsistency" in the way SCIAC games are officiated? I am new to the league, but I have seen a lot of what I would call missed or phantom calls, and they don't seem to call the game very consistently one play to the next. And this isn't to say they favor one team or another, it seems to be equally as bad in both directions.

Now, that being said in last weeks La Verne game the officials were barely noticeable and had no real impact on the game, which is ideal, but it's the first game I have seen La Verne play where that's been the case. Is up and down officiating a trend?

That is because they have had winning seasons every year since 1956.

Winning does breed local support. Plus they are a bit of a captive audience, not a whole lot going on to compete with you for your entertainment dollar in McMinnville.

LeoFan,
Welcome aboard. Plus K for your contributions.
And by the way, you guys earned and deserved to win last Saturday. You played a complete game and dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage. Hats off to your Leos. And, by the way, I really enjoyed the festivities and spirit near the booths in the mall area of your campus.
I am glad that you will be getting a new field next year.

I will be driving up to OXY for the Tiger Homecoming. If any OXY posters would like to hook-up and meet, please send me an email.
