New football field at ULV?  Any place on the web that shows plans/updates?

I was told while watching last week's CU/ULV game that after this season the playing field and track will be replaced with artificial turf. As funding becomes available, the stands and surrounding area will be addressed.

I was also told that as funds become available that the college will address the baseball and softball playing fields. Both sports are now playing off campus due to other construction on campus. The school already owns the land where the fields will be located.

The school planners/designers have done an excellent job of design and space utilization with all the new construction on campus.

I am happy for the students and student/athletes that they are getting a very nice and "refreshed" campus and sporting facilities.

Very cool.  Not too sure how much I like the turf in CA stadiums but the cost and wear and tear of true grass must be a big factor.  Never seen ULV's field but sounds like an upgrade is needed.

LeoFan,
Welcome aboard. Plus K for your contributions.
And by the way, you guys earned and deserved to win last Saturday. You played a complete game and dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage. Hats off to your Leos. And, by the way, I really enjoyed the festivities and spirit near the booths in the mall area of your campus.
I am glad that you will be getting a new field next year.

Thank you. Yeah those festivities were pretty cool. I thought they did a real nice job welcoming the alumni back and having an overall festival like feel.. That little campus/town area is pretty cool, I really like it around there.

Thanks for the compliments on the game. It was the most complete game of football they've played thus far. Seemed to be fewer mental mistakes and they executed for the most part all game long. With that said you gotta give hats of the Chapman. Down 23-7 there was no quit on that team, and they rallied back with a couple of long plays to get with in 2. To the end of the game, Chapman kept fighting. That's a testament to the players and that coaching staff over there.

To me, Chapman's issue that game was they were never really able to string plays together and sustain drives. The one long drive they did put together ended in a blocked field goal. To me that was the difference, if Chapman could have sustained a couple of drives here and there to go with the big plays they had, the game easily could have turned the other way.

This is exactly how it was explained to me as well.

I would also like to thank you guys for welcoming to the boards. I could literally talk football all day, and I have really enjoyed watching these teams play, but until now have never really had an outlet to talk about them, as most of my friends no little or nothing about this league or this level of play. So again, thank you all for being passionate and knowledgeable fans and for letting a newcomer jump in and ramble on.

I am not a big fan of artificial surfaces at all, but I see the need for them. ULV practices on that field, I believe there are activities on it during the course of a normal school week, etc. For the sake maintenance and cost it's pretty much the only way to go at this point for them.

Apparently not everyone is happy:

Track coach has a valid point. I know others weren't happy with the baseball field being demolished as part of the construction. As it stands now the majority of their sports will be played off campus, which is a bummer, imo. That being said there apparently is a long term plan and the campus is expanding.

As I understand it, the baseball and softball fields will be on land that ULV already owns, and is very close to the campus. Like a very short walk. IMHO, this is a short term sacrifice for a long term gain. As far as track is concerned, they too will receive a very upgraded track. I am sure the students would not want to walk further to a classroom building, and that they also will enjoy their new dorms being on campus where the BB field was located.

LeoFan--Agree that artificial surfaces in many ways don't make sense in SoCal. LV field was in somewhat rough shape when I was over there for a game in September, though--including at least a couple of pretty bad bald spots.  One huge advantage of the artificial surface is playability notwithstanding lots of competing uses.  Sounds like your folks sensibly opted that way.  Looking forward to seeing the new field.  I enjoyed my trip to LaVerne, by the way: handsome little downtown, convenient tailgating for the Stags faithful, and friendly folks on campus.

GAMEDAY!!

Good luck to everyone.. Let's hope for some well played, injury football across the conference today.

And the SCIAC has pretty much played itself out.  Cal Lu has absolutely destroyed the conference (minus the 1st half against Redlands) and everyone else is beating up on each other.  My question is if Redlands wins out, will they get a bid and go to CLU again?  Will they get a bid?

Notwithstanding the early touchdown, Oxy started out slow and lethargic.  The two self-inflicted Chapman turnovers in the first half really helped.  Completely different game in the second half.  Oxy found its legs on both sides of the ball and steadily took control of the game.  Really fun to watch.

Evidently, my camera had the same feeling about the first half and corrupted the memory card that contained my images for most of the first half.  Here is a link to the rest: http://gallery.me.com/aybates#100457

I thought it was Homecoming.  Where are all the fans?

The stands were full in the first half (remember I don't have many pics for that half).  Despite the snow storms in the Northeast, it was blazing hot at Patterson Field (in Jack Kemp Stadium) and many fans decided to retreat to the shade.

I even suffered some muscle cramps on the sideline--to the mild amusement of some onlooking players.
