Redlands at #8 in regionals ,not a good start.

The SCIAC has NEVER got a second team in the playoffs. I don't see that changing even if Redlands does win out. The regional rankings that came out today speak to this exactly. Money and travel costs trump everything when it comes to DIII playoffs. I'm sure some scrub team in the Midwest or back East will get in like usual bumping a deserving West Coast team out.

The West Coast teams get the shaft in playoff scheduling. Just like when a very good 9-0 Oxy team had to go to Linfield in 2005 in the first round. They would have housed a 1/3 to 1/2 the field with Andy Collins at the helm. But I'm not bitching though...

Well, I've seen all three of the Pool C hopefuls in the West Top 10 play--Pios vs. CMS at Portland, Redlands vs. CMS at Claremont, and St. Olaf against Hamline (as well as the tape of the Bethel game)--and, much as I hate to credit anything at Manitou, I don't think it's at all accurate to suggest that the Oles are a "scrub team in the Midwest."  They are very solid. Watch the Bethel tape, where they beat a very well-coached and VERY physical team (that advanced to the 4th round against Mt. Union last year, by the way).  IF the Oles can get past the Johnnies this weekend--and Gagliardi appears to have emerged from his early season coma recently--it's my view that they well deserve a bid.  As for the rest, it seems only fair to observe that Redlands has been unconvincing in consecutive weeks against a slate of teams that are hardly world-beaters: CMS, Oxy, and LaVerne.

I guess my question about Redlands getting in was pretty much answered with the regional rankings coming out.  The SCIAC fans must be Cubs fans and keep the idea that "this is finally going to be the year."

In the comments on the regional rankings blog I detail how I think the NCAA may have made a mistake it can correct next week.

Thanks, Pat.  I didn't really pay any attention to the comments on the blog.  How much of a difference do you think that could make?

ATTENTION CAL LU FANS that are planning to travel to Chapman for the game Saturday night. There is another major event on campus Saturday night so I suggest for easy parking under the field that you arrive earlier than usual. There are several inexpensive places to eat within a short walk of the campus in Old Town Orange.

The Orangewood exit off the 57 FWY south (just past Anaheim Stadium) is the quickest route. Turn left off the 57
and Orangewood turns into Walnut, which will lead you to the Stadium, that is just past Glassell Street on the right side.

First, want to say thanks for so many interesting comments on the SCIAC Board.

I'm in two minds about Redlands deserving a playoff berth, if they win remaining games. They haven't played nearly well enough on the road (Cal-Lu, CMC, Oxy), especially their poor Dee against the pass and their serial silly penalties. QB Hurst, his best WR and 2 solid RB's will be returning, so perhaps the natural cycle will work in Redlands' favor next season when Cal-Lu and Oxy graduate their All-SCIAC QB's.

All the same, Cal-Lu will still be the team to beat with Mosier, Rogers and tough linemen both sides of the ball. Not since Oxy's golden Collins/Goltz era in middle of last decade has the SCIAC seen a team dominate like Cal-Lu, and it should be appreciated that this years' 3-peat is their first ever. Their football program has raised the bar, and I reckon all SCIAC alums from other universities would wish them the very best of luck in the playoffs.

Redlands was 16 seconds aways from being undefeated and has a significant win over a top 10 ranked team. If doesn't matter how they have played in other games only that they are W's in the win column.

If they win out they deserve to make the playoff field. If they don't they might as well start scheduling crap, patsy teams in the future because it would be highly obvious that upgrading your non-conference schedule means NOTHING...

More on Sweeny's rushing stats this year in an article this morning in USA Today:

No mention of how Cal Lu held him to just 56 yards  ;D  (that is sarcasm)

Redlands has held every running back that was out with an injury this year to 0 yards. I'm surprised they haven't been recognized nationally for that yet, its an impressive stat.

Just in on the news wire ... they also are leading the conference in W-L percentage for warm-ups at a perfect 100% ... still the raining SCIAC football warm-up champ as well (I believe they are going on 10+ years). It will be tough to knock them off with such a strong pre-game routine, it is obvious the hours a week that they put in practicing, coordinating, and perfecting their tough guy persona.

I wonder if the NCAA will finally consider this when doing next week's regional rankings?

I was going to say, his yards per game might be low for that game, but his yards per carry are huge! Infinite, in fact!

For those who might have missed it, Pat Coleman has written a customarily sagacious analysis regarding Redlands' D3football ranking in the Daily Dose "Triple Take" column this week.

RFB,
Your evaluation of Redlands' playoff prospects is both heartening and cogent. Sadly, I can't go past the salient factor that our Dawgs have not played well enough on the road this season. Unless Santa Claus is on the DIII Playoffs selection committee, I don't reckon that a West Regional At-large team will be gifted a home game. All the same, wouldn't it be fun to have another crack at Cal-Lu? ;D

As for the droll put-down by "Kingsmen4" about Redlands that "it is obvious the hours a week that they put in practicing, coordinating, and perfecting their tough guy persona", one only needs to check out the closeness of Kingsmen vs. Bulldogs games during the past decade to see irrefutable evidence that neither team has needed to artificially manufacture a tough guy persona. Both of these estimable teams play plenty tough!  ;)
