:( It's really a shame what's happened to Whittier football in the past 23 years. At one time, the Poets were among the league powerhouse: 405-268-19 with 24 league titles from 1907 through 1989 (335-206-13 with 22 title from 1929 though '89 under five coaches -- Wallace Newman, George Allen, Don Coryell, John Godfrey and Hugh Mendez). From 1957 through '64 they won eight straight titles. Since 1990, Whittier has gone 54-150 under seven coaches. I would be worse, but Bob Owens (now at Chapman) managed back-to-back winning season and league titles in 1997-98. Even Owens was only 20-43 in seven seasons. I don't know if the administration decided to de-emphasize football after Godfrey, or Mendez, or what. Unfortunately, the Whittier newspaper doesn't cover them much. If they can get another win, this would be the first winning year since '98. :(

Fear the Poet

I know to the big dogs of the SCIAC the following diatribe wont mean much, but the Poet program has taken some baby steps this year. The talented offense is in place, but more importantly a better commitment from top to bottom and more support on campus. Two SCIAC wins in a row is a first in 6 years as well. Coach Stratton is doing a fine job of rallying the troops and for the first time in a long while the vibe on campus and from administrators is quite positive. You cant go from horrible to SCIAC champs in one year, but with a strong finish..things are definitely looking up. We will see if its the same ol 50-something to 7 game this weekend or the Poets muster up the heart and composure to make of game of it. I think it will be the latter. Get the shoes back next week and see if they can give Redlands a run for their money and chalk up the first Poet winning season since 1998. That my D3 friends would be a huge accomplishment for this squad. With each improvement, recruiting becomes that much easier and respect is in sight. The continued improvements of the facility doesnt hurt either.

Whatever happens, I know LR is enjoying the ride. He respects the coaches and enjoys his teammates this go around.

Lucy and I feel very fortunate and blessed to be able to see this thing play out.

Go Poets!!

ps- OB..please spell check for me.

Good luck to the Poets -- after this week, of course. Kingsmen, Kingsmen, go Kingsmen, fight on to victory!  ;D

On a quick scan three typos jumped out at me, but who's counting?

This week's SCIAC schedule:
Cal Lutheran (5-1, 4-0 SCIAC) @ Whittier (3-3, 2-2) 3:00 p.m.
Claremont (0-6, 0-4) @ Redlands (3-3, 3-1) 7:00 p.m.
Pomona (0-6, 0-4) @ Oxy (1-5, 1-3) 7:00 p.m.

Nonconference:
La Verne (3-3) @ Chapman (4-2) 7:00 p.m.

Game time is 3:00 p.m. at Whittier. The game will be over just in time for dinner after CLU eats WC for a late lunch.

Redlands gets an easy win at home against Claremont.

Oxy is on an 8-game winning steak against Pomona. The Tigers will beat the Sagehens and keep The Drum for the 9th straight year.

Chapman's 4 wins are against teams with a combined record of 4-20, and Whittier has 3 of the 4 wins. I pick the Leopards to get a road win at Chapman.

It does for us anyway. I have a feeling Mt. Union feels a little differently

The Road "TO" Salem...I know you haven't made it past the first round, but you might want to read up on how the playoffs are structured  :o

To be honest- I dont really care how they are structured. When the structure becomes relevant to our team- like maybe later this year, then I will have a look.. . . . . until then, one game at a time.

Yes, because ignorance for the sake of ignorance is generally thought highly of...

Don't be too rough on wildozer. After all, he provides us with side-splitting anecdotes, like the time his son came into the game and was going to (presumably) throw a touchdown pass but instead he botched the audible and threw the ball to no one in sight. C'mon, that is knee-slapping, laugh out loud hilarity! I'll bet wildozer's son just loved reading about that game highlight.

Fortunately for me I have a kid who is really honest with himself, can take a good joke- and probably cant find his way here yet.  ;D
