Oxy hosts Chapman for Homecoming. Looking forward to it. Attended once before, classy production, although Oxy defeated Chapman.

What is going on in the Oxy athletics department?

We had the debacle which involved Dale Widolff's unceremonious removal as FC for penny ante recruiting violations after his 30 years of greatness.

There was the scandal which involved the women's volleyball coach, which resulted in 2 years of NCAA probation. You can read about that here: http://occidentalweekly.com/sports/2013/02/07/ncaa-sanctions-tiger-athletics-puts-program-on-two-year-probation

Now there's another scandal which involved the long-time Oxy athletic trainer John Sweet, who resigned after complaints of sexual harassment.

Good thing the campus newspaper is reporting this stuff, because you certainly won't see any posts about it on the Oxy athletics Facebook page (where I was banned from posting by the SID/assistant AD), or the college's Facebook page.

Excuses, explanations, and justifications abound. Amorphous responsibility taken by "the college." What's the common denominator of all of this trouble? Hmmm.

So the lesson is A.D. Hoffman will strike you down for sending out spam emails to current athletes at other institutions but ignore the fact if you're being a creep to current Oxy athletes. Got it.

Read this quote from an interview with the new Oxy coach.
"[The players] need someone that is going to be here and be their leader and be a figurehead for the program and that's me," Semones said.

Figurehead???  Interesting choice of words.

Haha, you can never get one past OxyBob!

What a mess at Oxy.  How in the world does the President of the school continue to let this kind of thing happen?  It's a shame all around and will take a lot of time to correct.

She was a very good basketball coach.  She should go back to her level of competence.
It's been done before at Oxy.  One was a president who only lasted a year and a half or so before being replaced.

What a mess at Oxy.

I didn't even mention the hiring of Bill Redell, who quit after one disastrous season, followed by a "national search" for a new coach, which lasted all of 5 minutes.

Item from the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin:

QuoteCoaches in the SCIAC are going to have considerably more flexibility when it comes to recruiting with the Council of Presidents approval of NCAA Bylaw 13 last week.

The rule already regulates recruiting for most NCAA Division III institutions across the country and now allows for more freedom for the SCIAC, which previously abided by more restrictive rules than schools in other conferences.

Previously coaches could not do any off-campus recruiting. That meant no home visits to speak with athletes and their families and no trips by the college coaches to the prospective student-athlete's school.

"It's nice to have that option," University of Redlands football coach Mike Maynard said. "You can get a lot more done by meeting with a handshake and being able to meet face to face,"

All admit that organization and time management will be more important than ever.

"There will definitely be more work involved and it will be a bit more costly because we're traveling," Maynard said. "We're all going to have to figure out how to best manage our time."

The Council of Presidents, which includes the presidents from each of the member schools, is the final decision-maker when it comes to changes within the rules and regulations of the SCIAC. The Athletic Administrators report directly to the Faculty Athletic Committee, which in turn reports to the presidents.
