 D.O.C.,

As of late, your existential prognostications in this D3 Board are, paradoxically, enigmatic and illuminating! ;)

Olddog,

Many thanks for your insights regarding the daunting task which our Bulldogs face in Thousand Oaks this week.

The only observation I can add to your cogent analysis is that some of our playcalling against Oxy was, arguably, a bit too conservative.
For instance, toward the end of the 1st quarter, UR chose to punt on 4th down and 2 yards on the Tigers' 38 yard line. Naturally, the touchback put the ball on the 20, and one play later a completed pass meant Oxy was right back up to the 35.
Coach Goode seems very competent and Coach Maynard's record is stellar, so I hope they are addressing the issues that you've raised in your post.

Cheers, amigo!

Hemi,

I hear what you are say about the 4th and 2, and I agree I most likely would have gone for it, but coach did not want to give Oxy any mo, the idea was to pin them inside the 10 (kid got excited and over kicked it), and we had earlier tried to go under center and committed a penalty.

One of my pet peeves in zone read...in short yardage situations,  in my opinion it is a horrible short yardage offense (easy read for MLB and OLB when just playing run), you have to have played MLB to understand how simple it gets when you only have to worry about one guy hurting you, this is why you see pistol and two back offenses such as MHB ran against us. I hope UR cleans this up, we did not against MHB or PLU.

Looking forward to the battle.

Redlands played their usual game. They came out woofing but when Oxy tied it up the woofing stopped and Redlands started to panic and play it safe. Unfortunately, Oxy's defense is very weak and couldn't do anything to stop UR down the stretch. In years past Oxy would have won the game and Redlands would have bitterly complained about the refs.

On Saturday CLU will win easily.

Oxy,

The UR offense you saw is all they got, to show you how weak Oxy is up front UR could not get a first down running the ball against PLU until the third qt running the ball.
UR was not in a panic and UR would not have blamed the game on the refs, that is far from Maynard's style. Yes your O line was holding all night, sometimes just tackling the UR d line (see how many times the d line had to fix their should pads like a RB) and a different crew would have made the game tougher on Oxy. They were a lazy crew, the side judge had to pick up the White hat's flag and run 60 yards to do it, really...if you can not move stop referring. He and the line judge were flat lazy, look how slow they spotted the ball and how bad they were both ways.

If UR was in a panic they would not have gone right back to running zone read. Oxy could not stop it, why not keep doing it, give your QB's first game.

UR should have beat Oxy by 5 td's that night. UR qb made a poor decision going down throwing across the field and as your QB admit I just threw it up there and got lucky.

I agree CLU is the heavy favorite.

Bob makes an little jab about Redlands complaining about the officials. Olddog responds that UR wouldn't complain about the officials and then spends 1/2 his post complaining about the officials.

wildcat11, didn't you know that Redlands has never lost a football game because the other team beat them? Redlands always has some flimsy excuse, lame explanation, or feeble reasons why they lost. Their never-ending arrogance and trademark hubris won't let them admit that they got beat by a better team, so instead they let the excuses fly. Heck, in this case olddog makes flimsy excuses, lame explanations, and feeble reasons why they WON.

Hemi,

I do not know if the UR offense can turn it around. Against PLU they did not get a first down until the middle of the second quarter. When Bridgeford was in they went empty sets. When Samson was in they went to single back sets. If they go with Bridgeford next week it takes away the ability to run zone read,  he is not a runner and that is why I think they went Samson to start the season. So I do not know what they will do, but my guess is Bridgeford first Samson second at this point.

In summary the game was 14-0 in the fourth, one can not leave the defense with a dozen short fields to defend. I would be elated to still be in the game 14-0 in the fourth when the offense had only been inside the 50 twice. Then the offense gives up 6. If the defense can defend the post (same play MHB had success, set up or made three scores) they will be nails going forward. The real question is not the qb's it is the O line, I heard one tackle was hurt, but others have to step up. The O line has to get better real soon or it does not matter who is the QB or what plays are called. It does not matter how good the defense is getting.

Don't see me blaming the refs for this one, just a poor offense ...hum...can wait for the reply

Hemingway,

I would give Samson a 6.5 on how well he played. He made some very good zone reads, even though some did not make many yards it was the right move to keep the ball and he had a couple nifty 8 and 12 yard scrambles to first downs. He did not have enough time to go deep or check down to the third and fourth guy. He was under duress all night for the most part. The reason the 99 yard pass worked was it was off play action MHB was looking for dive. It was a very pretty throw, Irwin never broke stride. One of his picks and maybe two were the receiver breaking off the route incorrectly since you could see the receiver coach talking to his WR and not Samson.

I would be surprised if UR coaches had a quick hook on him, against PLU. Heck, his first college start against the #3 team and pre-season AA linemen. I expect PLU to be good, but believe me,  MHB played at a whole different level than say NCC,CLU or PLU did last year. Their D line was the difference in the game to me.

I stand by my statement, this team has a chance to be better than last year and I just wish they were playing CLU later in the season. A lot of sophs on the field for UR, so we will be a lot better at the end of they year.

Don't see me blaming the refs in this game too, hum....there goes that credible post

No UR won because they had better linemen. Just making making an observation about something, I know about than the typical fan . Some of the SCIAC crews are great, others need to take the nigh off. If player safety is so important that enforce high low blocks by MHB all night, enforce grabbing guys from behind or being tackles when they do not expect it...

The reason the dogs complain so much may be because of a persistent barking problem resulting in dehydration with all that hot SoCali weather, global climate change, etc.    Lots of hydration from Woof Breweries might have solved the problem for the dogs.

Bob I can not wait to hear your response, you are like a dog that has been beaten down. So my post in past two loses have basically said our offense killed us and we were not the better team but you just make up what you think I have said to make your post sound better. I thought this was not that kind of board but when you are old sometime one thinks they can say what they want.
"Old Dog makes flimsy excuses why they won", not surprised you are missing the point! UR clearly was 50 points better than Oxy because they have zero linemen, even your stud tackle got put on his rear and had to go out of the game, by a backer 50 pounds lighter., that was pay back for a cheap shot by him earlier in the game..BTW. My point is two issues, the offense is not getting it done and made some poor decisions...so I am disappointed  and when the officials (of which I know more about than you ever will) are being lazy I will call them on it. Football is a tough game and the players deserve the official's best effort. If you do not like my observation no need to attack one, just ignore it.
