Crazy Night in the SCIAC. UR did escape. UR comes out and just overwhelms Chapman defense on the first drive just shoving itdown their throats. UR then blocks a punt and our All Am kicker misses a chip shot, giving the Chapman kids life. A late first half score in the first half off a marginal late hit and UR is down. The real story line is the defensive line in the second half and hoe they shut down run. Coach Mariani the DC decided to play a four man front in the second half and the UR's d line began to shove Chappy's blockers back into the backfield taking away a very effective zone read cut back play. Sometime lasr night  Chapman's O  line would give the UR line a pure false read trying to get them to flow with them and then cut back under them. Once the D line took over Chappy struggled and four holding calls put their offense in a hole. This was the real story line.

Our offense was different story, man we really struggled in second and third quarter holding our blocks, and we were exposed that our QB is not much of a deep threat. We could not stretch the field on them, and it was there all night. Double tight worked pretty well and I was surprised we did not use more of it. Chappy is pretty quick and running right at them appeared to be the best way to attack them.

In conclusion Chapman played their hearts out and UR was lucky to escape with the win. Great night at the Wilson Field for the Dogs...
Got it done when it counted in the fourth. We play CMS, PP, and WC, it appears no gimmes in the SCIAC this year. I know Maynard will keep them focused.

It's funny to see the CLU recap use the words "stunned" and "upset" after getting beat last night.  Reality needs to set in over there and understand that CLU is an average D-3 team at best right now.  This has been in the works since about week 7 last year when teams figured out they could run all over the CLU D.  I expect them to beat Whittier and ULV before getting stomped by Chapman.  Amazing how quickly things have turned.

I watched the Chapman/Redlands game and thought it was funny to hear the announcers (who I assume are students) talk about Coach Mac's blog.  They mentioned numerous times how he had been talking about Chapman in a negative light and I agree with them.

From the blog:
"The main event would have to be Chapman hosting the team from east of here. This one boils down to run offense against run defense. The Dogs have the fourth-best strength of schedule in D3 football, the Panthers have gotten fat from the 223rd "roughest" schedule out of 244 teams in NCAA Division III. Does that account for anything?"

Why would a Head Coach talk about other schools this way?  Maybe it's "friendly" but most people, especially those from the other schools will not see it that way.  Calling Redlands "the team from East of here" is dumb.  I don't believe the Redlands coach has his own blog and constantly calls them Cal Who (although RFB would probably enjoy it).  As I have said, this team and program can't go off of what they have done in the past few years.  Just because you won a few SCIAC titles it does not mean you can walk around like you own the D-3 football world.  There is a difference between being confident and forcing confidence on others.

Maybe I am not crazy ???

Oxy's recap says the Tigers "pulled off the impossible."  When did CLU turn into the '72 Dolphins?

olddog...Redlands did indeed take away the Chapman run, but Chapman did indeed run through and over Redlands on that one TD. Wonder what a five deep running back team would do.

DOC,

Redlands is not that good, their offense is the bottom half of weak SCIAC league. If UR goes to Oregon or Midwest, anything less than a  28 point loss is a moral victory, I think it is an easier to recruit when you win Conference. This is the first year the coaches can go on high school campuses and recruit. Many NW schools come down to So Cal and go on campus. Redlands needs to grab a few more kids from the Orange County and the Inland Empire where there is a ton of talent, especially linemen. The only thing Redlands offense did right is kept turnovers down. I think they went with the wrong QB, Russel is tough and a good kid, but the lack of the ability to make a deep throw, makes it tough to run when Safeties can be in two high and not worry about helping the corners much in coverage. Plus we refuse to get the ball to our big tight end who falls for an extra two or three yards every time. Chapman corners were in press coverage most of the night and we could only get one ball over the top one time. Heck the long pass surprised the Chapman secondary more than anything and it was under thrown, but Russel was about to get hit and stepped up at the last second.

The kids played their hearts out last night and a couple of my buddies last saw them against MHB and commented how much they had benefited from the tough schedule.

There have been many discussions baout SCIAC recruiting problems, mostly on the basketball boards.

The bottom line is that D3 type schools are just not known to parents and coaches in California, where they are part of the culture in states to the east of us.
CLU seems to recruit the best because their coach was at a football factory high school and has good contacts.

That was a great 40 yard play because he WAS going to get hit.

I could not figure out Chapman coverage because no way was he going to stop and throw deep back across field, but they gave him running room every time he rolled right -  and he took it for enough first downs.

At Oxy we call that hubris. At CLU they have to look up the word hubris.

Desertcat,

The mind boggles!  :o

In any case, got to admit that SCIAC's playoff record is "nothing to write home about". Linfield and PLU have given the West Coast some credibility by winning the Stagg Bowl, while Oxy in 2004 was the only SCIAC team to score playoff wins this millennium. Nonetheless, the Tigers then lost at Linfield!
