Also, a word on recruiting in general. When we talk about "recruiting" at this level, it's important to keep in mind that kids are not being offered free educations to come play at D3. They are coming because they don't want to end their football career just yet, and just want the chance to play. My son has several friends playing D1 football, and none of them still seem to have the passion and joy for the game that they all had at one time. Some have even soured on it. My son still loves the game. This year was a great experience for him. Whether or not anybody thinks they are good enough to be where they ended up or that if they had better players they would have gone farther, please know that this particular group has really gelled, and that's why they were able to go as far as they did this year. These Bulldog players are very close knit, and I know many of them will be friends for life.

Also a word about Coach Maynard. I love this guy. My son had a crappy high school varsity coach (who was finally fired a few weeks ago, thank God), and Coach Maynard has been the answer to our prayers. My son was "recruited" by Cal Lu as well, and the difference between the 2 recruiting experiences was night and day (not to mention the other schools, 2 D2 schools in the mix, who recruited as well). Basically, Coach Maynard was the reason my son chose Redlands. He found my son and started callling him and didn't stop. When we came for a visit, Maynard made it clear that this is where he wanted to be in 3 years. He saw something in my son and the other recruits and he was right. They did good.

It was a good year. Can't wait to order that ring.

Mom,

My son, who graduated from Whittier this past year was also recruited by Maynard and I must agree what a class act he is. We were very fond of his way of doing things. None of us have any regrets about Whittier, because they have done SO much for our son and our family and he has made lifelong friends there.

I remember when Brandon decided on Whittier, he called Coach Maynard to tell him because Maynard was so wonderful during the process. Maynard's response... " thank you for calling Brandon, I will always be your biggest fan and good luck at Whittier"

pure class..unlike others that were also recruiting him.

Nothing but respect to Redlands and the staff

Congrats to the UR boys, It looks like the fellow coaches in the SCIAC agreed with my assessment of the UR's defense and in particular all three starting D linemen were voted first team and one the POY..... They made mlb - Tuttles all conference in what was his first year playing defense. A few signature downs stick out in my mind, the goal line stances against Cal Lu, the goal line stance against La Verne and the complete domination of Chapman's o line in the second half, they shut down the Chapman run game. I must point out they went to a 40 look and added a red shirt frosh to the mix for all these event. Props to our QB Russell, he really improved as the season went on and picked up key first downs with his legs.

Well the season is over and a few notes while fresh in this old guys mind.

I expect the league to be more competitive next year. If I was to do an early preseason prediction this would be my top four teams and order.

1) CLU, They will return 15 starters from the last game of the year. One of their QB's will be back and I am sure their will be an overhaul in many departments. I think in Coach Mac's push to get his O line bigger they are too slow. UR beat them off the ball many times with their 230 to 265 pound d linemen. It will be interesting who they will play in the preseason next year.
They will be back no doubt. Other areas that need work are their defense, their DBs are not that big and can be over powered.
Linebacker play on the outside was spotty at times and need depth up front on defense.

2) Chapman. They return their skills next year, They return 16 starters from the last game of the season and most importantly their QB. If they want to be the champs they need to get better up front. On the D line they were desperate last year moving undersized linebackers to the D-line and the O line, a general upgrade in the depth. This could be their downfall. Linebacker spot has some holes to fill too.

3) UR, returns about 11 starters. The pro's are our QB is back, two most productive RB , three experienced WRs who will need to step it up and 4 starting O linemen are back. This O line has to get in the weight room and get bigger with exception of one player. How well UR does next year hinges on their improvement over position where starters are lost. The defense will be good but not great like last season. Three first team All Conf d linemen are lost and really only one d linemen back who played a lot is coming back to play NG/DT. The new DEs has some real talent and I expect them by game four to be playing at a very high level. One DE maybe better than Locke when it is all done. The linebackers will be solid. An injured all conference player should be back (sat out last year) and Tuttles, along with a cast of other that played a lot and started some games. This area will be the strength of the D. A couple good DBs return but three others will need to step up. The talent is there just need to prove they can get it done, a solid offseason is a must. UR could easily take the conference if their pieces come together, but if they don't...the other could go right through them. One interesting fact is UR should gets Oxy, CLU and Chapman at home next year. Playing all your big games on the road and winning was very impressive. Lastly the tough pre-season schedule is a big advantage over those that play cupcakes.

4) Oxy, I really like what I saw. They have some skill athletes that can flat out play. Their issue will continue to be matching up in the trenches. I saw improvement, but how far can they grow. I really do not know but it appears depth will be a huge issue for Oxy. The Frosh QB and RB make them very dangerous, the new coach did a great job and Smith has the O line blocking well. My point being Oxy is far from a gimme next year...

Looking forward to the Redlands game at Crusader Stadium. Should be another good matchup.
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

MHB,

I think it will be a much closer match this time. The players were real frustrated at their special teams performance, only to blame themselves...block punts by missing guys or doubling on a guy while the others run free, pooch punt and three WR line up on the wrong side or the kicker kicked it to the wrong spot.... First game you guys drove the ball pretty well on us and stuffed our running game for only 25 yards...We had over 40 the first series. We improved quite a bit on both those fronts only to flat fall apart on special teams...of which we could not afford to do...It was not like we were playing Oxy. You all deserved to win no doubt...Even with three big mistakes by the middle of the 3rd qt it was just a 14-0 game and we had moved the ball a few times pretty deep into your territory. I know the team was real frustrated, a lot of pride on their end.

Best of luck next week, I will be pulling for the Cru to win it all..

You what?

I have heard nothing but positives from folks (UR crew)  that went to Belton....Friendly fans, helpful stadium workers and cops, kids (not workers) showing adults where to go and park...walking with them to show them, Fans wanting to know if UR needed any tickets, MHB fans, players and coaches thanking UR parents for coming and wishing them safe travels.
MHB plays hard and tough, but once the game is over they are very down home folks...Heck they even gave the UR bus a police escort into town  and out of town. They went the extra mile to and they should be cheered on.

olddog,
Is that bulletin board material for next season that  you just gave Linfield?
Now that the SCIAC has been eliminated, I am pulling for our west coast representatives.
