From the other side of the field I saw 2 well-coached, highly motivated, Redlands Bulldog and Chapman Panther teams that fought for the entire game. This was D 3 football at its best. Few turnovers, few penalties, and 2 teams that left nothing on the field.

It is easy to look back  with all the what ifs............but the bottom line, as I mentioned to the UR AD after the game...it is a shame that someone had to lose.

This is not D1 or D2 football where everything is (fill in your own blanks). This is D3 where it is easy to
look back at what could have been. Forget about the if, ands or buts, or the could of, should of or
would of, and realize that the players gave it their all, and unfortunately, one team scored more that the other.

UR is by far the best conference team CU played this year.

I have enjoyed this season immensely, and look forward to many more Bulldog battles.

Best of luck to them in the future.

Congratulations to Chapman on the win and SCIAC title. It was pretty simple, they were hungry and wanted it played with championship desire versus Redlands. A few observations on the game:

1. Chapman converting on 4th & 14 that led to a touchdown. Redlands has to make that stop, inexcusable.
2. The botched offensive possession at the end of the first half was a killer. It came back to haunt Redlands big time.
3. I didn't mind trying to pull off the early onside kick but the continued short kickoffs was a bad strategy. It allowed Chapman to play on a much shorter field for the majority of the game.
3. Redlands effort in the 3rd quarter was pathetic and gutless. Chapman came out and punched Redlands in the mouth and ran the ball down their throat. Redlands was flat, no emotion or fire in their bellies. They were basically a lifeless corpse from the players on the field to the coaches on the sidelines.
4. The end of the game was odd, it seems that Redlands came up with the ball while the pile was moving and the refs didn't blow the whistle. The refs looked really confused and ruled the ball to Chapman.
5. Just a bad day for the defense, no adjustments at all from the coaching staff to stop the run and get stops. I should bill my 120 miles of gas money to the defensive coaching staff for that display.

Moving forward, Redlands needs a major infusion of talent across the board. Chapman will be in prime position to elevate their program with tonights win. We'll see if Redlands steps it up or goes back to multiple, yearly second place finishes.

First congrats to Chapman, they got it done and as RFB outline UR did not, UR can only blame themselves coaches and players.

My I add RFB.

We botched our offense  two times inside the 5 and came away with only 6 points instead of 14. I knew in the first half that would haunt us. Our WR ran routes just inches short of first downs or TD's...why ?
I agree on the kick off scenario, maybe one. Why pooch to the west end with the wind, every kicker put it in the end zone all night
Our time out management was horrible.
Tackling, it was just pathetic, why our back up SS playing for Fudge did not wrap up I really do not understand, they went right at him and where was the back side backer on the cutback and counter. Quit going for a kill shot and wrap up. All their long runs were after breaking tackles.
Adjustments, I think going to a 40 front should have been in order in the second half, not sure why we did not. Our corners played well they did not need help.
We dropped ball on crucial third downs and ran some horrible routes. Know the field, down and distance.
We went three and out in the middle of the third despite Brown getting a majority of his yards inside. Did we forgot we could have 2 and 5 at will. What was with that throw back play? Our QB is not John Elway. That was a waste of a down inside the 10.

It is a very frustrating loss, we just did to many things wrong against a talented and hungry team, who took 20 minutes to settle down. I agree Chapman came out in the second half determined to leave it on the field. Chapman adjusted and forced our SS to play the run, they found the weakness.

It was pretty frustrating, Chapman deserved to win they executed. This is where we differ RFB, I think UR has the better players, just the mentally lost the game (coaches and players ) between the ears. Chapman looses a ton of seniors this season and with admissions getting more difficult despite the wonderful campus, depth of good players will always be an issue at Chapman. I actually think UR will be better next year than this year. UR had a very good freshman recruiting class.

As always, my take of the lofty SCIAC officials. The white hat needs to retire, he can barely move. All those running plays by both sides and not one holding play called either way. We both held no doubt, not just one side. One of UR d linemen wont be able to wear his jersey next week, it was so torn up last night, from the back side. The face mask call on third and 13 was bogus that lead to 7 when we had the stop. I had my binoculars on Bixler, he never grabbed the face mask, and the no call fumble at the end of the game. They don't blow the whistle, clear to everyone there was not whistle including Chapman players by their body language they thought they had lost it, yet the refs did not know what to do when Redlands came out of the pile. Once again the Umpire and White hat are just useless. They stood the kid up and stripped him, that simple. They should donate their game dues since they did not earn their fee. , how these guys that can not move ref I will never understand.

Congrats to the Panther, I will be rooting for you guys and next year we will return the favor and celebrate on your 50 yard line too.
Hope it fuels the dogs to play with more fire next year.

my 2 cents:

In the first half--Redlands came out and played with energy and looked very sharp.  They moved the ball and their defense stuffed Chapman's run game for most of the half.  The end of the half playcalling/clock management (not calling a timeout with like 12 seconds on the clock and on the doorstep of the endzone) was crazy stupid and cost Redlands points (as others have pointed out).  In the second half, Chapman's running game suddenly began clicking.  I couldn't tell what the difference was (did Chapman change something, did Redlands change something, or did things just open up???).  At any rate---Redland's inability to stop the running game in the 2nd half ultimately caused them to lose.  Still--it was a great game--both teams have improved from earlier in the season and I expect (pending the outcome of next week's game) a battle in McMinnville.

1 more cent:  The stupid train bell that Redlands blares over the loudspeaker is just dumb.  I don't remember hearing that during the Linfield game....but I guess the only opportunity was during Redlands late game FG......anyway---turn down the volume at least......

Is Chapman going to run the table this year in the SCIAC?

I apparently asked the right question on August 13 and look forward to a great game between Chapman and Linfield if the selection committee so wills it.   (Assuming first that Linfield wins over Pacific, and Chapman over Whittier).  The Wildcats winning should normally be a foregone conclusion.  But after the close game with the Panthers earlier this year and with the Linfield loss to Willamette (now in the middle of the conference standings), WC11's blog post takes on new meaning:  "...we all found out is that if Linfield takes for granted the opposition and puts out an inferior effort, Linfield is going to get upended."  The Wildcats have obviously improved, but so have the Panthers.  Should be quite a cat fight.

By the way Oxy Bob, is 4 years in the SCIAC enough to make Chapman a "real" member of the conference? ;)

Agreed on the train horn, just bush league at its best. Couple that with the fat ass that I had to tell to sit down four times so my kid and I could watch the game, beyond annoyed. Luckily he caught me in my early 40's and mellow with a kid in tow. My old self would have thrown him down the Runners stairs.

Here's how real Chapman is: They'll make it 10 straight years of the SCIAC going out in the first round of the playoffs.

The bulldogs now know how Obama feels being a lame duck with no playoffs in sight, best of luck to the seniors thanks for being true student athletes. It has been a pleasure.

I do think we will be right in the thick of it next year, would not be surprised if the pre-season favorite in the SCIAC, given Our QB and RB are back, along with a young defense that will only be better in the next two years.

Will the Regals go 4-5 or 3-6?
