Uniforms, locker rooms and swagger mean a lot to younger players now. It just does for some reason. To Chapman and Coach O's credit I believe they have actually understood and reacted to that trend very well. I recently visited and got to see some of their facilities. Chapman's locker room has surround-sound speakers, couches and even a plasma screen TV... Tell me as a high school kid that walking into that locker room wouldn't make you excited to come play there.

Here is a photo of the other half of Chapman's new stadium. With the other half of the stadium this place will actually start to feel like a real DII or DIAA facility. Could give Redlands and Calwho a run for their money as toughest place to play in the SCIAC

That is pretty cool OC Guy, I am just not sure about Coach O. He is a very nice man, but needs to be more aggressive in recruiting.

I'll say one thing about the facilities at Redlands.....they have the best damn grounds crew in all of D3.  Their baseball field leaves a lot to be desired overall but that surface is unreal.  The grass on The Runner looks like a damn PGA course!

The players love playing on the grass, plus it is a lot cooler than even the "Cool" turf they use as a practice field. I think the grass is here to stay for a while.

UR admission standards are slightly less then CU, they too loose players to LV, CLU...Heck the POY two seasons ago had UR as his first choice. UR's current president's agenda is less of a sports emphasis, he leaves football games at halftime, even when he was not sick. His goals are diversity, making the school 50 percent minority by 2020. This goal has affected how aid is given out in order to attract desired students to achieve his goal.
This goal has also altered traditional white student enrollment too, i.e. school did a poor job of presenting the issue to incoming white parents. Were academic standards going to be reduced to achieve this goal, school lost many applicants?  The school went from five years ago to having a record number of freshman (over 800) to around 500 to 600 last couple years. Of course soaring cost affected enrollment too. The goal is very honorable, I am just stating my observations, btw are all right.

UR could see other SCIAC schools building new athletic facilities, and it concerns coaches greatly. Heck UR's football lockers just got AC that worked last year, to give you an idea on how important it is to Admin, no AC and the boys practice in the desert. UR football lifts heavy weights under the stadium. UR has been studying how to expand their aging facilities but any significant changes still need a major funding source. Bottom line many new facilities are needed for the next 25 years. It remains to be seen if UR can catch the top schools in the SCIAC.

Like RFB said, most of UR's success is due to Mike Maynard and the fact football brings in 50+ freshman to the school, helping the male/female balance.
If Maynard was to retire of which I don't think will happen soon, it would be real interesting to see if UR turns into Oxy. Overall the sense I get is UR could turn into an Oxy real fast and current admin would not care.
Funny thing is most parents have no idea about Mike Maynard and how he will mature your son over the next four years of his life. Truly part of the college experience a parent wants for their son.

Lifting weights under the stadium is old school, and I hope they never change that aspect of the program. No AC in the locker rooms and getting after it in the desert sun is a right of passage for players coming through Redlands program. I'm a better man for going through that intense training for four years.

RFB, I fully understand what you are saying and believe it turns boys into men...., but kids today are not the same kid as 15 plus years ago. They want the glam, bling, ...they look at uniforms, and how big time things looks....Its just a fact, when Varsity HS coaches talk to 8th graders they discuss uniforms. Why do high schools need three of four combo's, some have six ? I would rather the kids have 5 star helmets and basic uniforms. I don't get it but know we have to go with it. Heck Maynard has a twitter account.
It never crossed my mind or my sons when we went through the process.

olddog ... I think we represent different generations,  but I  think we agree on this.  For me, from the era of leather helmets, black high top shoes, and no face bars, I look with disbelief at how HS teams are outfitted today.  Outfitted as they are, my "Flames" don't come close to the days of yore.

RFB, I agree 100% with you. Now we are touching on a topic that goes way past football and the board wont solve. I have never seen a generation think they know so much but understand so little about life..

. I do think if you took the face mask off there would be a lot less concussions, Johnnies nose might not look so good but concussions would drop.

Kelly Cooper is responsible for Redlands immaculate grounds. I played with him at Redlands, he's a great guy and was a ferocious LB (All SCIAC). The grass field at Ted Runner plays fast too, no way they go to artificial turf.

OCguy

TR is the best grass field i got to play on hands down. You have to respect a school and grounds keeper who has the dedication to get that playing surface ready for Saturday and maintain it at such a high level, especially in Southern California.

D O.C.

I'd vote for The Runner as my favorite surface (I really couldn't tell about Whitewater with all the ice and snow)

I am a contemporary of Bruce Rollinson at Mater Dei. Cannot get him to send a 3rd string Qb to LINFIELD.
Could not get Raul Lara when he was at Long Beach Poly to send any speed to LINFIELD. AND he played there one year!
My grandnephew played on the Mission Viejo California State Championship team in 2015. Could not get him to even look at Wildcat 11's website.
All his teammates think/thought they were going D1.

No wonder the SCAIC can't recruit SoCal.

olddog

DOC,

I don't think a third string QB by his senior year at MD could have played at LF, plus I doubt a third string qb is dedicated enough to D3 college football. I will never understand how parents pay thousands at that school and extra for football, then they bring in there dozen kids on scholarship and take your kids spot while you fund raise and drink the cool aid, just stupid to me..but some by tennis shoes because of a players name on it.  I would rather my kid play D10 in his community, plus its proven their are a ton of public schools with much better AP programs than MD.

Most LB kids are not a fit so why bother and UR has had a few MV kids, some played and some quit. OC kids in general are a tough recruit.

I love D3 because its so pure.

"There's a lot of ways to measure success and they do turn on the scoreboard, but we want our guys to have a great experience on field, to grow, and to learn value of hard work and teamwork," Cushman said. "The goal is for them to develop great relationships that they can be proud of -- and along the way we're going to block and tackle, too."

That quote sounds like something a mediocre coach would say.

Not to sound too negative with the hire but how could someone walk away from their program five days before camp opened?  I also feel like Oxy tried to hire someone way too quick.  Why not play out the season (and get your ass kicked all year...again) and go for a real good hire after the season when there will be more coaches available?

100 percent agree with you, JP. This is a terrible hire, just like the previous one. The AD needs to be fired for her role in DW exiting a program he built, and the two awful hires she has brought in to replace him. DW must be laughing his ass off right now, and justifiably so.

Jack, I agree with you...makes no sense. Other than it is obvious the President could care less about athletics. Its not the same old Oxy...
If you look at their website they were down to four coaches! Writing is all over the wall, Oxy is no longer relevant in the SCIAC

Tell OB to get off his grouchy couch and come back and join us.

Done

By popular demand I have returned. In truth Gray Fox begged and begged me to return, and he was becoming most irksome, so I relented. I don't know why I am here, since Oxy football has apparently reached its nadir. Perhaps I can regale you about the glory days of Andy Collins and Justin Goltz.

I read that the last Oxy coach "retired" (interesting term) and Oxy hired a new coach from Minnesota Morris. Not sure why he'd want the Oxy job with only 57 players, including a mere handful of linemen, but I suppose the weather in Los Angeles is better than in Minnesota. I was reminded of Myra Fleener from Hoosiers: "A man your age comes to a place like this, either he's running away from something or he has nowhere else to go." Anyway, good luck to the new coach.

I read the discussion about SCIAC football stadiums. I won't debate the merits of Oxy's Patterson Field except to say it has by far the best mood lighting in the conference.
