UR always has intra-squad, pretty boring, 2 and 3's play a lot, getting looks for who will go on the scout team and D squad . .....Pretty much as advertised, OL looked solid. Defense is pretty quick, thin up front. No injuries and UR will be in the hunt.

QB battle going on, last years final starter and some new j c kid from Chaffey (I think). We always seem to need 2, last year our starter played the second half with a broken leg and then shut down for the season.

I am hearing rumors of a few HC coaches want to have JV games. I think a good idea, it will keep football numbers up and male enrollment at these extremely liberal arts colleges.

It wasn't always that way. We used to scrimmage JC's (West LA, San Jacinto, etc.) and they were battles most of the time, but too many fights would break out, so I'm not surprised Redlands goes the intra squad route now. JV games are stupid, just line up your best 22 and lets go.

The school must support a JV team. I don't think any SCIAC schools are even remotely interested in improving funding to their Varsity programs much less fund a JV squad.
Another thing to point out is that Mount Union is in Alliance OH, not much else to do beside play football.

Au contraire...you have The Troll Hole Museum and The Feline Historical Museum.   8-)

Heat wave hits just in time for UR's first game...so typical...it will be 100 degrees when the boys go out for early outs. IE football at its best.

Mount Union doesn't think JV games are stupid.

Of course they don't. How else are they going to keep the 75 players enrolled in school who will never see the field.

That could have gone to the competition.  Need the scrubs for all the playoff practices.

They also use all the sets and schemes for when they make the varsity.
Full ten game schedule I saw one year.

My point is most of those players will never play a down of varsity football. The JV team ensures that they stay enrolled in school because it keeps their dream alive that they will play varsity one day, when the school and coaching staff knows they will not. Why do you think they bring in big numbers to the program every year? It certainly is not for depth I can tell you that. In true reality, most programs rely on a core of 35-50 players who play regularly. Everyone else is allowed to stay in the program because of the revenue they generate for the University.

LINFIELD has carried as many as 115. There are only 4-5 JV games.
People want to be part of the program's life lessons while they get their degree.

RFB,

I have to disagree with you on this one and agree with DOC. Lastly some D squad guys have ended up starting by their junior and senior year. I do not see the harm in it.

I agree with DOC and olddog on this as well.  JV games are good on a number of fronts.

How can this even be an argument?  If a coach had the support and resources, why wouldn't he carry a JV squad?  Saves wear and tear on frontline players.  Keeps late bloomers in the fold who often become contributors (or more) as 3rd and 4th year players.  It is a football no brainer to me.

The additional benefit of enrollment revenue is an ROI calculation to the school.  Schools already admit they add football programs to incentivize young men to come to school there.

How does carrying 125 instead of 65 (or less  - Oxy's latest count is 52 ) add/subtract to the school's bottom line when factoring more coaches, equipment, insurance expenses, and JV game activities?  I am curious on what is the break even number.

BTW, Whittier 2017 roster posted shows 90 players.  Good for them.
