BTW, Whittier 2017 roster posted shows 90 players.  Good for them.

If you're playing JV football at Sh**tier, it's time to hang up the pads.

I have to add that UMHB has a JV squad and it works very well to give seconds some good usable play time. We face HSU, TLU and I believe Wayland Baptist, Texas A&T and Southern Prep. That tells me that HSU and TLU also have JV squads. Having run HS and been part of DII coaching staff, the JV or what some may call developmental are invaluable on many fronts. Some young players need just a little more development before they reach that potential, JV is perfect to help with that and gets them into the scheme of the coaching staff. So I am with DOC and Dog on this one bigtime.

That that program just listed 90 players given they haven't had a winning season since 1998 - I find somewhat amazing...especially as bad as they've been the last three years and the challenge it must be to convince a kid (and the parents) to spend that kind of money to play there.

FYI: UMHB had 225 players report this season.

How many do they carry through into the season?

Unless you were a recruited prospect, why would a kid go out for football at MHB...I am sure there is a story about a couple kids over the past 5 years but the other 500 plus...other programs need players ...

I am not being a smart..a.... is MHB considered that great of academic school ?

As of 2014 UMHB had an acceptance rate of 79.9%. There are a lot of worse schools, but... Being the defending DIII champion and a perennial contender has had a lot to do with UMHB's success. And Texas is football crazy. Try telling a kid he isn't good enough to play DIII. Most, even benchwarmers in h.s., won't believe you. I've tried to tell people here in AL that it's a huge step up from h.s. and they don't believe me. Don't believe that most of the kids that make an impact in DIII are "all something" in h.s. They will never believe until they get there.

UMHB isn't the only school that draws big numbers. Methodists drew 140 first years just a few years ago somehow. Lots of schools rely on first year football players to help out with numbers, so they over recruit like crazy. Once the kid is on campus and the check has cleared, the money is yours for at least a semester. Probably more like a year. First years are big money makers. They live on campus and pay rent. They generally are required to have meal plans. They participate in entry level classes, which are generally the largest classes taught by the youngest, and therefore least expensive teachers. Seniors are expensive for the opposite reasons. So a huge first year class of football players is a huge benefit to the budget, and a lot of schools rely on that.

UMU had 180 come to camp. Methodist 185. that's for a team that went 3-6 last year and not much better the year before. Kickoff lists all the camp numbers if you are interested. Some eyebrow raisers for sure.

I'll be a smarts$$...maybe it's the opportunity to beat the "Sh**tier" out of Redlands once or twice a year!   :D

UMHB 3rd string would put 60 on Whittier. Really, Whittier is an awful football program. I went to the Redlands game at Whittier last year and it was pitiful to watch. I really do believe they could have lost to a HS team, that's how bad they were. The stadium is a joke and the campus looked like crap. Why anyone would go to school there is beyond me.

Of course, many of that 225 will not be back on the field in the spring, but I have been pleasantly surprised by how many do stay in school. My bias will show, but UMHB is a wonderful school with first-class facilities and a stellar reputation in the region. As we say, "It is an education for life and an experience of a lifetime!"

Thanks, ....I agree most parents/player really do not understand how good you have to be to play at the top 50 schools in D3...Most of those kids had D2 or 1AA interest, plus bounce backs , but end up at D3 for many reasons. I would love to see MHB play up a division or two  for one pre-season game. I know the whole SOS issue, but !
