Do you think the game happens in two week, OB?

At this point I don't know what's worse for Oxy, playing UR in two weeks or not playing UR in two weeks.

This week Redlands football = bye. Oxy football = bye-bye.

OxyBob

Tough situation either way.

As a former investigator, the following questions arise after reading the posts/articles and drawing some inferences from the material contained therein:

1. It seems that the Oxy AD (a woman?) is trying to suppress the release of all but a minimal amount of information. Do those posters who are familiar with the situation feel that. for whatever reason, the AD would rather see the remainder of the season cancelled? What about future seasons?
2. Has Oxy fielded a much smaller than average squad recently?
3. I think I read that Oxy won the conference a few years ago, but then the coach departed. If so, was this a resignation or firing? If a firing, was it by the current AD?
4. If there was no problem with squad size a few seasons ago, what factors have been primarily responsible for the decreased team size over the last few seasons?
5. Is a major part of the problem the departure of the former coach?
Just some questions I had after reading what I did.  ;)

1.  She has been hostile to the football program from day one.  The dismissal of Coach Widolff for what was a minor NCAA infraction was only one example.
2.  Typically speaking Oxy has had between 60-70 players on the roster.  I know my final year we had 68 on the roster when the season began.  The recruiting classes have been a bit small the
last couple of seasons in terms of freshmen (I'm not sure about the number of transfers).
3.  Dale Widolff had been the coach for 30 years.  He was dismissed after a minor NCAA infraction (their words not mine).  There were major violations with the Women's Volleyball program that
were initially ignored.  They got in big trouble and stained the athletic department.  This helped the AD justify the firing of the football coach.  Here is a link to the NCAA findings:
     https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search/miCaseView/report?id=102388
4.  Recruiting at Oxy has its challenges due to the academic requirements.  I don't know if the administration has been more difficult (since neither the AD or the President seems to care about
having football).  It could be the coaching instability since the firing of Widolff has added to this.  Or maybe the prior coaching staff was poor at recruiting.
5.  I think the unjust firing of Coach Widolff is a huge problem.  The AD's replacement coaches have been poor choices, but the lack of stability for the program is a crippler.

Also the last coach "retiring" in July and the current coach being hired in August probably has affected numbers/retention and possibly health of players.

Funny story - I had a family friend get recruited by DW in 2012. Dale apparently told my family friend that he would have no problem getting in and that the program really wanted him. My family friend was also being salivated over by Linfield college who flew him out to their school and Coach Smith even told him that he would be an All american by the time he was a Jr. (Kid ended up at Chapman and was a dominating force on the D-line and got all conference honors)

Long story short, the new AD came in and rejected him despite solid academics from a private school. DW called him personally to apologize and even mentioned the new AD as the reason for so many of the recruits being rejected and that was the reason for the small recruiting class. Shortly there after DW was fired and the new AD had officially started the collapse of OXY football.
Just plane sad to see a historic program stripped down because this AD wants woman's softball to have the same amount of funding and attention as Football.

The best part of poor Rob Cushman's pathetic letter to "Alumni, Fans and Friends" is the letterhead which lists Dale Widolff's 11 SCIAC championships and 4 NCAA playoff appearances.

I'm sad that things are going so badly for Oxy football, but I'm happy to see that the school's football field is named after its most famous football alumnus. I'm a Bills fan, and Jack Kemp was my hero when I was a little kid.

I don't think recruiting for FB is helped when a group of kids storm out the stadium during the national anthem, as a dad I would not 60k a year on this !
Great points Oxy...

Not only did they not understand it, but Churchill never said that.

I suggest Oxy stick to Vince Lombardi: "We shall play every game to the hilt with every ounce of fiber we have in our bodies."

From Sam Farmer's NFL column on Sept. 16 in the Los Angeles Times:

QuoteSad state of affairs — Occidental College, my alma mater, canceled its football home opener Saturday against Pacific of Oregon because of low roster numbers.

It's a troubling development for a once-proud Division III program that won 178 games and 11 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles under former coach Dale Widolff, including 12 consecutive winning seasons between 1983 to 1994.

Occidental also had a small but notable contingent of alumni who went on to make their mark in the NFL, including coach Jim Mora; players Jack Kemp and Vance Mueller; and on-field officials Jim Tunney and Ron Botchan, who played in the AFL for the Chargers and Houston.

Yet another proud moment for Oxy.

Paying for a recruit's or their parent's air fare or providing the transportation on the school's private plane would be violation.

Gray Fox

Sifting through all the recruiting letters he received in high school, he decided he wanted to go to a smaller, academically oriented school and called Occidental.

It was a piece of luck for Oxy, but it was luck by design.

"A big part of our challenge is finding very strong academic students, so we contact every high school basically in the western United States and subscribe to recruiting services and send out about 2,000 letters," Widolff said.

"By the time we got going, it was clear he was going to be a Division I guy. But when he went back through his recruiting materials, he came back to our stuff and basically contacted us."

That's how a Division I-caliber quarterback whose passing ability and penchant for pulling down the ball and running fits Widolff's spread offense so well ended up at Occidental.
