Funny story - I had a family friend get recruited by DW in 2012. Dale apparently told my family friend that he would have no problem getting in and that the program really wanted him. My family friend was also being salivated over by Linfield college who flew him out to their school and Coach Smith even told him that he would be an All american by the time he was a Jr. (Kid ended up at Chapman and was a dominating force on the D-line and got all conference honors)

Long story short, the new AD came in and rejected him despite solid academics from a private school. DW called him personally to apologize and even mentioned the new AD as the reason for so many of the recruits being rejected and that was the reason for the small recruiting class. Shortly there after DW was fired and the new AD had officially started the collapse of OXY football.
Just plane sad to see a historic program stripped down because this AD wants woman's softball to have the same amount of funding and attention as Football.

Paying for a recruit's or their parent's air fare or providing the transportation on the school's private plane would be violation.

You can pay for a recruit's transportation to and from the college for the student-athlete.

Sifting through all the recruiting letters he received in high school, he decided he wanted to go to a smaller, academically oriented school and called Occidental.

It was a piece of luck for Oxy, but it was luck by design.

"A big part of our challenge is finding very strong academic students, so we contact every high school basically in the western United States and subscribe to recruiting services and send out about 2,000 letters," Widolff said.

"By the time we got going, it was clear he was going to be a Division I guy. But when he went back through his recruiting materials, he came back to our stuff and basically contacted us."

That's how a Division I-caliber quarterback whose passing ability and penchant for pulling down the ball and running fits Widolff's spread offense so well ended up at Occidental.

Incredible talent. RIP

Thank you for correcting me.  We had a similar situation with our wrestling program and when I read the university's report it indicated it was a violation.  I thought that meant it was an NCAA violation but after doing more research I've learned that it was actually a violation of our conference rules.  I apologize for implying that Linfield had committed an infraction.  I respect the Linfield program  though I still don't understand why you call it a dome.    ;) :)

Just read the AD's bio...Holy Toledo Oxy is in trouble

Wow, look at the first thing she did, upgrade the basketball gym and women's locker, no bias there. Oxy you all are doomed when your AD is clearly not pro football.  Lets face it CMS tried to drop football, their was almost an alumni financial revolt. Oxy AD clearly is not a SCIAC history major. Tough sledding trying to raise money when your clearly show your lack of support for football and its huge number of alumni.

I bet Whittier is praying they can play them this year.

Well, you can upgrade other facilities and not be anti-football. In reality, you need to have decent facilities for all sports, especially in D-3. So the fact that basketball facilities were upgraded is probably good for the entirety of Oxy's athletics program. A modern day AD has to make sure every sport has a chance to compete.

Football, even in D-3, consumes a lot of resources.

Certainly, football at OXY is broken, but that's not just an AD issue. The entire administration needs to decide about football.

In the NCAC, backmarkers like Oberlin and Kenyon haven't killed football even with low numbers and student interest. Denison used to be in that group, but now they're knocking on the door of the Top 25. Hiram has also had runs of good teams. Those four schools are not 'typical' for Ohio schools - Hiram has a unique program and the other three really aspire to be a national Liberal Arts college, much like Occidental. What that says is that while football isn't THE priority for those schools, they recognize it's value and kept it going, even in the days when Kenyon and Oberlin had 45 to 50 players and linemen playing both ways.

Also, at DePauw, they had an AD who was supposedly 'anti-football' and fired a coach for an alleged violation of school policy. That set the program in the weeds for a while, but they made a good hire who knew how to recruit and coach in the area and are now NCAC contenders.

So a college with competitive academics can recover an thrive, even with an AD who is 'anti-football' according to some.

Again, it's a decision made by the entire administration - President, Cabinet, Trustees, etc. Not just the AD. They control the purse and the identity of the College.

If you have followed Oxy, this is the same Oxy that let the kids camp in their office protesting, on their phones ordering take out...need I say more.
The same Oxy, when a club set out small flags as memorial to 911, kids stole the flags twice... Big news this year flags were not stolen.

She was a good basketball coach.  The Peter Principle is now in effect.

In Dallas, I know a mother of a sophomore man and a grandfather of a sophomore woman.
They and the students are quite happy with the school.

Honestly, not super familiar with Oxy (or the conference as a whole). What do we think the chances are that the program goes away? Luckily, the conference would still have 7 teams, to the AQ would be maintained. But 7 teams in a conference (especially one so isolated) can't sound like a great proposition

Oxy has a very proud football history, so eliminating the program should be a non-starter. If the player numbers are truly that bad I would do the following:

1. Cancel the 2017 season
2. Fire the Athletic Director
3. Apologize to DW and beg him to take over the program again. If he declines, see if he will assist in implementing #4
4. Hire an Occidental alumnus to lead and rebuild the program with the goal of playing a full 2018 schedule

Read this article from DW's canning from 2012 and one of the folks that commented wrote this: "Ms Hoffman was a poor hire, guys, and if you let this go, it won't be long before you have to replace a whole lot of coaches. Professors and Coaches alike do not appreciate working in an environment where there is no support, no trust."
