I don't know when but I'd be surprised if a lot of kids transferred out after Cushman was hired in early August. Where would they attend school this fall?
They could quit and not transfer.  I know there were many people upset that the OC was not given the HC spot.

I remember looking when Semones left and nobody else on staff had any head coaching experience.

I suppose someone could do a roster check, if they had time and gumption.

If we only hired people with head coaching experience, how would anyone get head coaching experience?
As late as the "retirement" was hiring an interim and conducting a complete search after the season might have been the best option.  The OC was the most logical choice in that situation
Instead they hire an individual who has no knowledge of the conference and was willing to screw his own school and players by leaving them last minute.
I think we will never know why kids left until we know why the coach "retired"

That's what I don't understand.  Semones quits at the beginning of August.  Why not give someone on the old staff the reigns to see how he handles it.  Even if they didn't have HC experience, what a great excuse to give someone a test drive. That gives the program a little continuity and then you can do a national search right after the season ends if needed.

That seems like a simple plan that any AD (especially someone who is a former coach) would understand.

This failure falls flat on the AD's feet.

My point was that there was nobody who was an obvious choice to promote.

Very telling article from the school paper

That is an unintentionally hilarious article.

"After a short but impressionable trip, Cushman accepted the offer and moved out to Los Angeles Aug. 9."

I think Oxy Bob knows more, his post are very cryptic, There is a reason he had Coach Doug on a Boat, please expand Bob?
Outside looking in, Football players work very hard and sometimes never see the field much. Throw in at the very least a lack of caring by Admin to a bias against football, some say the heck with it. Lets see how many frosh drop off if they continue football.

New Oxy coach announced:

http://www.d3football.com/seasons/2017/contrib/201708043gg9lu

"There's a lot of ways to measure success and they do turn on the scoreboard, but we want our guys to have a great experience on field, to grow, and to learn value of hard work and teamwork," Cushman said. "The goal is for them to develop great relationships that they can be proud of -- and along the way we're going to block and tackle, too."

That quote sounds like something a mediocre coach would say.

Not to sound too negative with the hire but how could someone walk away from their program five days before camp opened?  I also feel like Oxy tried to hire someone way too quick.  Why not play out the season (and get your ass kicked all year...again) and go for a real good hire after the season when there will be more coaches available?

This is what I wrote right after they announced the hire.  The fact that it sounds like nobody on staff was even considered, not even as an interim HC, really shows how bad of a situation the entire program is in.  I sure hope the AD understood the ramifications of this entire situation and how it was handled.  None of us will ever get the "real" story behind it all but the Alumni from Oxy cannot, and should not, be happy about this.

Hey, I just quoted the article's author, who described an even more circuitous route for Cushman:

QuoteCushman first heard about the available coaching position in late July and expressed interest in returning to the West Coast from his previous home in the Midwest. Born in Oregon, Cushman coached in Northern California during the early part of his career before coaching for some schools in the Midwest, eventually landing at the University of Minnesota Morris in Morris, Minn.

After a short but impressionable trip, Cushman accepted the offer and moved out to Los Angeles Aug. 9.

On a related note, I understand you are a fan of the University of California, Los Angeles, in Los Angeles, California.

Maybe a coach they had previously talked to sent them an email asking if they wanted to transfer.   :P
