Oxybob we also extend a honorary adoption to the Cru for any Oxy alumni for the 2017 season... so until this mess gets settled your always welcome to join us in the Crunation.

Bob,

Don't take DFW up on that offer.  The brisket in Belton isn't even that good.   ;D

It seems the people most ardently against the government interfering in their personal lives seem to have the biggest problem with some guys kneeling and fully support POTUS demanding they stand. Why? Who cares?

Olddog says he's going to put an auto purchase on hold until some unnamed car company kowtows to his jingoism  by pulling their sponsorship of the NFL. All because some guy he's never met, and has no context of where he came from, wants to have a dialogue about the systemic oppression stemming out of slavery, redlining from the National Housing Act of 1934, Jim Crow laws, covert lynching, the war on drugs that gave crack users 10x the prison time as cocaine users (read: black people), the prison industrial complex, mass incarceration and police brutality, all of which currently affects a black person's reality in 2017.

There's a third verse of the Star Spangled Banner, written by a man who prosecuted abolitionists:

No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave

About our stunning defeat of the Corps of Colonial Marines, black slaves promised their freedom if they fought for the Brits. Wonder why we left that verse out?

"But people died for that song and flag!" Wrong. They died for a country founded on a collection of ideas whose core tenant was life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Not forcing people to respect YOUR belief system.

Time and time again they have said it's not about the military, but this Toby Keith brand of patriotism renders any dialogue meaningless. Which is ironic because Toby Keith is a Ford pitchman, which sponsors the NFL.

"I got a black friend and he says he's not oppressed!" Well then, let's do the truly libertarian thing and FORCE people to stand for a song about the British bombing the Chesapeake Bay 205 years ago, because slave owners didn't want to pay their taxes.

I stand with my hand over my heart and remove my cap EVERY time the anthem is played, because that's what I CHOOSE to do out of reverence for the ideas my country supposedly stands for, as is my right, and if someone kneels (as one does in prayer, genuflection, while getting flipping knighted) during that song, how is that MY problem? It's not. That person should be free to do as they choose in a PUBLICLY FINANCED STADIUM (which I have ANOTHER problem with!) Grow up, America ain't perfect.

"It's not that I'm a xenophobe. It's just that I think America is the greatest country in the world and all the other countries are not as good." - Kenny Powers

Trying to paint something a different color to "win" your argument is such a easy read. The issue is very simple to me. I control my checkbook and I vote with it. I message thes entities on how I feel about what they are supporting, I have a friend in PR that has help me, interesting to learn about FB and Twitter. I have never said People do not have the right to sit, keep their hat on etc for the NA...and never will....However I want nothing to do with people that do, hits too close to home. The one thing we all should do is respect is those that laid down for us. Most people are not protesting during the NA, they are just too into themselves.

And the humilation continues...

From The Occidental Weekly:

Title IX complaint filed on behalf of football team, alleging anti-male bias in athletics department

http://www.theoccidentalweekly.com/news/2017/10/17/title-ix-complaint-filed-behalf-football-team-alleging-anti-male-bias-athletics-department/2889541

"The complaint implicates President Jonathan Veitch and the Occidental Board of Trustees for their support of Hoffman."

Don't forget what Veitch said:

"Let me be clear: Jaime Hoffman has my full support. I believe she has the skills, vision and commitment needed to move us forward."

Stay tuned.

OxyBob

EDIT: Veitch's office is responsible for conducting investigations regarding complaints against the Title IX Office and the Title IX Coordinator, so you can predict with great accuracy where this investigation is going.

Thanks Bob, I found the part about shoulder pads sad but funny. How a school can not put kids in 4.5 or 5 star helmets as rated by VT, I am baffled, yet cancels games due to safety. Says a lot how much the school cared.

Clearly this is part of the process to drop football. Now go five seasons 0-10, it will be easy to justify dropping FB. Sorry to the old timers, writing is on the wall.

The last thing I wish to do right now is comment on NFL players and other athletes protesting conditions in America which they believe should be redressed urgently. However, since two of their most ardent detractors in here are brother Redlands Alumni, I feel compelled to support values which I gained from studying and playing sports at U of R (albiet way back before their time) and from volunteering to serve in Vietnam (Tuy Hoa, Phu Yen Province, 1969-70).

Although our squadron's survivors are now dwindling, we maintain regular email communication. And, to a man, they have strongly advocated for the right to protest peacefully in a manner that each American sees fit, which they reckon is exactly what these players have been exercising. Above all else, we harbor the hope that our service meant that America will ever safeguard our inalienable Rights, "endowed by their Creator", whether that's our right to bear arms or our freedom of expression/press/religion as opposed to, say, the eventual communist indoctrination which forced South Vietnamese to follow the conquering dictatorship's ideological dogmas and rituals rigidly. Or say, attempting to turn back the clock and revive the "spurious nationalism" of McCarthyism's blacklisting.

I've much admired Old Dogs' insights on this and SCIAC Pick'em board, but I respectfully disagree with his making negative generalizations about Oxy fans and students. Obviously, the Oxy alumni in here are highly knowledgeable about what they criticize, but I plead with you, Old Dog, please stick to your commentaries about what you have judged to be wrongheaded about Redlands. Even though I often don't concur, there's no doubt you possess far more than sufficient knowledge of our current university and its policies to continue drawing cogent conclusions.

I won't be breaking my "vow of silence" for at least another couple of years, but I do greatly appreciate reading the vigorous and witty exchange of ideas here from such a sagacious bunch of SCIAC fans which invariably has been without the egregious rancor or vicious insults which are prevalent in other online forums. I salute Pat Coleman for setting the civil tone of D3boards.com by his laudable mature example as well as by his common sense interventions when, rarely, that has been necessary.

To all commenters, thanks so much for taking your valuable time indulging a septuagenarian's thoughts on this. As Casey Kasem used to sign off, I wish you blue skies and green lights.

Hemmi,

You are back! welcome

1) First and foremost thank you for your service to the country.
2) My comments about Oxy fan are only those that disrespected our flag and NA. Sorry buddy always going to have something to say, as you so graciously put it, its my right. Many Oxy fans were and are ashamed of what they saw.
3) I get a kick out of people on this issue of the flag, to me it is just a sign of respect, it is that simple. I also open doors for women, I help seniors make it up the step at stores, games, etc. I always shake vets hand and say thank you. If I see some active in a bar I will send over a cold one. This country is a blessing and I have spent time in the third world, hated it and felt sorry for natives. Everyone should spend a little time in the third world, mistake I made raising my own.  I am sure you understand that concept.

Take care

Buddy

the mistake the NFL made is not amending all contracts in the off season.

The NFL knows it does not have the authority to make these changes unilaterally. It will have to work with the players' association on this if it wants to go this route.

Serious question - how many Oxy students have the 'five year plan'. Most liberal arts colleges of their nature usually groom students to get out in four.

If so, the seniors will have graduated, most likely. So this is curtains for them, I'm afraid.

Probably real hit or miss. You only need a single credit that's required for graduation to be eligible without being considered a full time student. So a single credit phys ed course or some senior seminar class could be skipped in the spring and taken in the fall if it's available. It isn't terribly hard to do that last minute but I'm sure it differs greatly from one college to another based on course requirements and offerings.

I know at Wabash they have a 9th semester option for those who are student teaching, and a few players who were injured came back for a 5th year that way. Otherwise, they dropped out and then came back, which may put wrenches in plans for grad school, etc.

Anyway, the situation is awful.

They use to have a masters in education program.  That was also dismantled.  Many players got their masters while working as graduate assistants.  Very played a fifth year.  It happened, but it was rare.

I also found that odd. Oxy uses safety of the players as cover for canceling the season, yet according to the quoted player Oxy did not keep the players safe with adequate equipment.
