But... Who's going to win this conference?
I sure have no idea. I think no one does.

Chapman is in the drivers seat. They host Cal Lu in a big one next weekend, and then CMS to close their regular season.

Agreed.  The problem for Cal Lu is if they knock off Chapman next week they will probably lay an egg against Redlands.  It will be interesting if they do win next week since they will have an extra week to prep for Redlands due to the Oxy fiasco.

I've said all year I feel like Cal Lutheran is the best team in the SCIAC. They are finally healthy on the offensive line which will be big in next weeks matchup vs Chapman.

Big time play makers at Receiver in Lacombe and Wendell, with Besson at RB and Freidrichson at Q they have big time offensive fire power. Problem is defense is just alright so we will see, next Saturdays game should be a good one.

Regardless SCIAC champ to play UMHB in first round I would assume, no way anyone gets past that one

Somewhat unrelated but Oxy isn't the only school with a dysfunctional athletic director. Division 2 Humboldt State is going to cut their program after 80 some years (currently 5-1) at the end of the year for seemingly no reason.

The GNAC (I think???) is a mess and you play each team twice.  I honestly do not see a benefit of that and really don't think there is a huge advantage to carry football.

I don't think you've been following D-II football on the west coast. There are so few teams it's impossible to get games and it's as expensive for them to travel as it is for everyone else.

Looking at Azusa Pacific's (who used to be a SCIAC opponent often) schedule I see a total of four trips that need a flight: Texas, British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon.  I cannot imagine how much money these schools could save by getting rid of football, no matter how upset people would get.

Fair enough the GNAC is a mess agreed especially considering Simon Frasier who has 5 games dating back to 2013. That being said Humboldt is a solid football program under coach Smith it seems like they could find a home somewhere, just sad to see a longtime program go.

It's not dissimilar to Menlo football, really. Totally different schools but same issues.

It's a budget thing. That's the reason. The school doesn't have the money for football. The non-D1 California state schools are hard pressed for $$. Even the D-1 state schools are begging for money (except Cal and UCLA, seemingly). I guess Humboldt has had small classes recently. There's an effort to save the sport if the alumni can raise enough money.

Since I work at a GNAC school, I am afraid of Humboldt leaving football. We may have to merge leagues with the RMAC in football or somehow convince some of the NAIA schools to join the NCAA. The thing is, the GNAC is strong in most every other sport, but with Western not interested in football, and none of the other schools really geared up for football, it may be time to evaluate the whole thing.

Our student athletes have to bus it except to go to Alaska and Billings. (Actually, baseball and softball bus it to Billings, I believe).

It is weird to play teams twice in a year, but that's the way it goes.

Here is the situation at HSU according to the local newspaper:

The HSU president babbles the same cliched twaddle as Oxy's president.

Yep, but they get Redlands at home. A lot to play for if this scenario plays out. Cal Lu wins the SCIAC and goes back to the playoffs, or Redlands plays the spoiler just like Cal Lu did in 1991 when they beat Redlands and kept them out of the playoffs. Rivalry game for both programs too.

Humbolt is about to join a long list of California schools to drop football:

University of Pacific
San Francisco State
Hayward State (East Bay)
Sonoma State
Chico State
Cal State Long Beach
Cal State Fullerton
UC Santa Barbara
Menlo
St. Mary's
Santa Clara

I'm sure I'm missing some others, but these come to mind

Let's not overlook those California State University of Los Angeles Golden Eagles who boast 5 men's sports and 7 women's sports.
Is that not the closest institution of Higher Learning to Occidental? (not counting the Glendale Community College Gauchos who do field a football team, albeit at taxpayers expense)
