This will ruffle some old folks feathers but every single one of the elite programs in the country is both bending and breaking NCAA rules every year. That's part of the reason they are better than [insert your favorite team]. No different than the D1 guys...commit infraction to get recruit, self report, receive meaningless penalty (if you get penalized at all), wash, rinse, repeat.

Leipold broke rules. Larry broke rules and Vince breaks rules. Caruso breaks rules. Drass breaks rules. Obviously Fredenburg breaks rules...doesn't matter what he did, they all do it. Sometimes they got caught, other times they don't. Sometimes they self report to get their slap on the wrist and avoid a bigger penalty. It may be a lot less frequent or less common at the d3 level but you're kidding yourself if you think it isn't happening. The better programs at every level are pushing the boundaries (and sometimes blowing right through them) in order to get better players and win more games.

As I am a novice to D3 athletics, do the schools have any type of scrimmage or spring game at the end of their spring camp?

Pat Coleman

Since D-III schools can't practice in pads, there's no spring game, not in the traditional sense.

However, schools who take a summer "foreign tour" trip can have 10 additional padded practices for those players who are going, and teams can certainly use one of the 10 to play a spring game. Schools can take a foreign tour once every three years.

Help me out here. Which rules did Larry and Vince break? It will give us something to talk about.
Thanks for the feedback! ☠🏈

Thanks commissioner. I knew there had to be a simple explanation. That also explains why I've seen quite a few teams schedule a foreign tour.

Rumor mill telling me,  SCIAC went to 10 games due to Oxy situation being so open ended. Schools did not want to get caught with just 8 games again.
Heard the 10 game venture is not permanent, just two year program and league will take a re-look at it them. Two years programs gives schools a chance to book a home and home, plus see if Oxy sticking around.
Oxy struggled to find a 9th game, hence playing the Mexican team. NWC schools and others did want to schedule them.

I believe it's a four-year agreement, and it's definitely because of the Occidental fallout.

Not sure why Chapman didn't jump at this chance to book another premier D3 program now that LF is off the table. Chapman's team next year should be in contention for a division title again next season.

OC Guy, I am hearing from other SCIAC coaches that Owens is close to retiring, what is your take?

Olddog - I believe that is true. He really has been a great face of the program and has done an amazing job representing Chapman U. He has also had the fortune of having two long time coordinators with him for the past decade in Coach Bishop and Coach Shine. I wouldn't be surprised if he retired in the next year or two but people have been saying that for years. The program looks to be in good hands and will continue to grow even if Coach Owens isn't at the helm. As the school expands and gets closer to 10k undergrad having a good football team will continue to be a priority. This is good news for the SCIAC in general, the more nationally competitive teams in the conference the more well respected the conference.

I guess this is good news.  However, as a former player, I am not jumping up and down.  It never should have come to this and for a program with a tradition, this headline is an embarrassment.

What a joke, ...on so many fronts. I love the spin in regards to academics. Really, the coach you fired Ms. Ad, did just fine ...but now its not a challenge ..

Bigger challenge is how does a coach recruit when the AD does not like football and the alumni/players have to save the team....

The closest thing to this situation is when CMS contemplated dropping football, and alumni went nuts. At least the Admin got the message and grew athletics...I doubt the same result
