UR and PP.....tale of two halves.

For those that watched it, it was one of the most awkward and unusual games I have ever seen.

First Half...

UR defensive games plan was to force the QB to throw. UR sat is a 3-5-3...D line was not going to put on a hard rush until the QB rolled out. UR's DC was challenging the QB to throw to his second and third read. UR figured out he was a one read thrower and could not check down or even had a check. Here is where is gets crazy, we had too many break downs at the corner spot, they made one good throw, but other times he was out of position or expected FS help. I am not sure what he was doing, but in the second half he seem to inside the WR better. UR was going to force PP to dump the ball and run power. It all worked fairly well for PP. You could see by the second part of the quarter 2, tweaks were made, the backers were getting more aggressive. Backers sat at 4 yard deep instead of 5, Inverts started controlling the numbers.
Our offense sputtered, we could not run the ball (no push and backers playing untouched). Our Frosh QB was sick, and we were struggling.

The second half was a different game. Backers moved up to 4 yards deep on run downs, inverts got more aggressive, DE bounced plays better, DB stayed inside the WR. We forced 5 punts in the second half, good returns and we are back to Bulldog Football. Pomona coach deciding to go for it on fourth down on his side was just stupid, a good kick off return, PP coach gift...gave us two short fields for the scores. Our sick frosh QB must have had an IV or something at half, he came out rolling in the second half. I am sure the DC's in the league are not looking forward to the next three years. The real MVP is the defense,....you will see CMS use some of our tactics in the last week of the season.

This team has a long ways to go, need to be ready to play 4 quarters, need to stay discipline for four quarters, but its nice to be the best 3-5 team I have seen in a while.
What is ironic UR gave Linfield its second toughest game all season.

I'm from the Sacramento area, and follow HS sports there closely. Folsom HS is a top 10 program in California, and Tyler Tremain lit it up as QB there. When I saw his name on the roster, I knew it would not be long before he seized the position.

This past weekend was senior night for CLU and my son.  They played U. La Verne and lost!  It was sad to watch.  The team started off running the ball at will scoring easily on the first drive and stopped doing what was working?  The defense could not stop the run all season, and the coaching staff could never make the proper adjustments.  Despite terrible coaching and the loss of 3 out of 5 starting o-lineman (center, RG, RT), the team fought back to take a 1 point lead with 50 seconds left in the game after a converting a two point try.  The defense let up a TD in 34 seconds!!  The offense drove the ball to midfield only to have the freshman RT let up a strip sack to end the game.  It was just SAD!  The future is grim for CLU.

He looks like he is the real deal, very good first two steps, and a quick release but a bit awkward looking. Future is bright for sure, we need some of Folsom linemen.

It's how he torques his body into his throws that's a little different, but it works just fine. He's just going to continue to get better with more reps. He's fun to watch as well.

I really like what the staff has done with recruiting, but agree with your assessments regarding OL recruitment. Bigger doesn't always mean better, and would rather sacrifice size/weight for speed. If they are undersized coming in, a year or two in a college strength program will make all the difference.

And I hear you about Folsom. Great program, and Redlands should be camped out there snagging their under recruited players. Sacramento is a talent rich area for recruiting.

P-P made a couple of weird decisions in the second half that helped enable that comeback. The 4th down call in the 4th quarter was wild.  About 3:30 left in the game, up 7.  I get that if you get that, the game is essentially done, but you give 30-40 yards away to a FR QB in his second start if you get stopped and make his job 10x easier.  That's one of those that's great if you get it, but full bonehead if you don't.

The other was a deep shot on 3rd and 33 earlier in the half.  Deep ball is not a good play for Noble ever, he got intercepted, a decent runback set Redlands up in decent position.  Redlands didn't score on that next possession (stopped on downs inside the 10), but turnovers breathe life into a team and I'm not at all in favor of arm punts when you're leading.  Trailing? Sure, take a shot, maybe get a defensive hold or a PI or whatever, but when you're ahead there's no reason to give a pulse back to the team chasing you.  Gotta smash that thing up the middle and punt, or maybe run something short to medium and give yourself a look at a FG or a higher percentage conversion opportunity on 4th down.

Turnover Hat's off to the Redlands though.  They, and their season, were done at halftime and they simply wouldn't accept that.  Should be a fun one in Claremont this weekend.

I agree Wally, If we play like a 3-5 team in the first half...it will be over. CMS will just run the ball and clock down our throat with a couple hooks and outs....to keep us in check.

The 3-3-5, with our inverts and #33 a stud backer...effectively gives us 8 in the box on most of their sets.

CMS has the best running game and by leaps and bounds the best defense in the conference.  Only one team has score more than 12 on them all season.  During the first CMS/Redlands game, CMS's QB was playing his first start of his career.  Offense was very conservative.  Should be a different offensive game plan this time.

olddog

Stag,

How great of an underdog do you have UR ?

thanks

I put my money on Redlands.  Bulldogs beats Stags in my professional opinion!  See what I did there?

StagLove

Redlands gave up 38 points to Chapman, so I definitely think CMS can score.  I'm going 31-14 CMS.

StagLove

Stags should be 7-0.  The defense only gave up 10 points to a Whitworth team that typically puts up a lot of points.  Starting QB was benched after that game.  The new QB has improved each week.  Very athletic.  Should probably run more.

Redlands has been the perennial power in the SCIAC for 30 years. Mentality comes into play, so they will be ready. Should be a good one, that's for sure.

olddog

31-14, when CMS had a comeback win. Hum ok...My key to the game is not to give up 5 sacks (hope a more mobile QB helps now)  and win the turnover battle. Key for both teams.
I think our defense will stop the run, our DC knows how to do it. UR has always been stingy against the run. The real question is how much we improve at one cornerback spot.
Equating UR blowing coverages against the best thrower in the league versus a running team, is an interesting analysis. UR mentally beat themselves against Chapman, when there is no one within 7 yards, we melted down.

Redlands completely sold out against the run Game 1 and Edwards still had 122 yds rushing.  I'm sure that will be the game plan again, but the CMS passing game will be better.

olddog

Stag,

I guess we will find out, being a 17 point dog to CMS, is like Cal to USC this Saturday...
