Huge giant rumor from the SCIAC, Whittier College is dropping football.  The SCIAC may implode in the coming weeks/months.

Interesting.  Their official website does not list a head coach but does list assistants.

A terrible mistake, if true.

I've been expecting this, but it sucks none the less. California is becoming a graveyard of dropped football programs. The list is extensive, and continues to grow.

The only coach with some success in the last two decades at WC was Stratton (Vegas and Ventura roots) who took over for a local guy in Jellerson (played HS local but no local coaching). If they could pay someone something of a liveable wage for SoCal they may be able to attract a good JC assistant and get someone who knows how to recruit the area and get some local SoCal talent to stick around. Quit hiring guys from Central Missouri or upstate New York. Sad to hear that your Alma Mater may fold it's storied program (may be storied from 1900-1970 but nonetheless, storied).

The Whittier defensive coordinator appears to confirm this on twitter (assuming we can trust twitter anymore)

I wonder if other schools have secretly been on the fence about cancelling football as well. This could drive them to pull the trigger too. Scheduling games outside of conference play was already difficult, and losing Whittier just adds to it.

One coach listed on their site right now. Sucks to see it go and I wonder what will happen to the rest of the SCIAC.

I guess the silver lining, such as it may be, for the remaining programs is that the drop to a 6 team minimum for the AQ means no loss of Pool A status as long as the rest hold the line. Under the old 7 team standard, the ramifications would have been much worse for the league.

Double round robin? Huh? Who wouldn't love that?

That isn't likely and I definitely don't advocate for it, but the non-con games vs. conference opponents probably aren't going away now.

The ASC is going to be down to 6 (or fewer) teams very soon also, so maybe some Week 5/6 scheduling opportunities there between a couple of conferences that will have a common need.

Sad Day for sure in regards to Whittier. I guess enough of the old alumni have died off and they are not worried about their support anymore. Whittier has produced some wealth alumni from the 50's and 60's. If was the hot ticket for a while. I guess Whittier is ok giving up 75 to 100 more male students. Its going to be interesting on how healthy the school stays.

The trend is not our friend, my guess is LV could be next.

The Frontier Conference (NAIA) plays a 10 game league schedule, with teams having the option of a zero week game (11th). I think that idea makes the most sense at some point.
If the SCIAC goes down to 5 teams, SCIAC football is over, unless Arizona Christian or a school like that decide to drop NAIA status and go D3...The rumor has been out there before the AZ schools might go D3. It would be cheaper for the AZ schools to come to CA than play the schedule they play.
