SCIAC seems down this year based on the first 2 weeks of non-conference play.  Thoughts?

sample size is so tiny that it's really hard to say:

Pomona at Carleton last week was a much more even match than the score indicates-Pomona just turned it over so many times (credit to Carleton) that  the yards they gained didn't result in scores.

The week one results were all relatively close but were also week 1 so I think they are hard to interpret.  I do think that Chapman was on their way to rolling over Pacific before lightning ended (wiped out) the game.  I think Chapman may be a leading contender in the SCIAC this year.

I think this week will provide a lot more clarity:

Whitworth at Chapman (
Linfield at Redlands
George Fox at CMS
Pacific at Pomona

Those should all be very telling results as to the relative strength of the SCIAC (and the NWC).

I don't think LaVerne will hang with UPS based on their result vs Willamette but stranger things have happened...

Oxy Bob and I watched a little of all the teams except Whittier, Oxy and LV, this season

CLU, a little better than last year, QB is better for sure
UR, Defense is just as good, QB better, a couple real nice WR and RB,  O line worse very very inexperienced
Chapman, agree might be in the pole position, very typical Chapman, fast team, QB is back etc
CMS, did not like what I saw, big but too slow, looked like they needed more practice, might be able to turn it around, figure out what works best after self scouting
PP, not close to the team they were last year...more middle of the pack versus top of conference but its early
LV, Lady president seems to be in charge of tackling drills
Less than two more years of Gavin.

I watched CMS in Chicago, PP at Carlton and Chapman's first game and I agree with your assessment.  I am not sure CLU will be better than last year.

Congrats to Linfield on the win. If I played defense for Redlands, I would be absolutely furious right now. Jim Good needs to fire himself as offensive coordinator, and focus on leading the program only.

Don't be fooled by that shotgun, spread formation because it's vanilla as they come. It has not evolved in years, and is devoid of any creativity. You have two power backs and some shifty receivers, so put the QB under center, run some misdirection runs with your receivers (wing tight or fly action), and put your two power backs in the backfield together and run downhill for damn sake. Play action football still works if you have forgotten.

And WTF was that **** in the last 6 minutes. Do you have a ****ing hurry up offense, Jim? You think taking your sweet time huddling up down 2 scores is acceptable. Here is the reality, Jim. You replaced a legendary coach that was beloved under ****ty circumstances, and don't have the good will you think you do. Another season like last and you need to go.

So ****ing pissed right now

CMS pulled Justin Edwards early out of precaution, which limited the run game.  They also rested returning All-Region Defensive End Joey Asta.  The defense is just as a good as last year.  Need to continue to tweak the offense.  Kulenkamp is very athletic and fast.  I suspect we will see more QB designed runs in the future.

I watched the game and there were concerns of an injury to Edwards, was there not?  I watched most of the SCIAC games Sat and the conference in weaker this year.  Gearge Fox is not very strong and was leading at half?  CLU stinks; PP lost the QB that made them good last season; Chapman is to small to compete with top D3 programs; and Redlands needs to open up the offense and has OL that is slow!  Staggs will win Conference and lose in the first round to Linfield.

That Kuhlenkamp TD run was special.  I kind of think he has to be the guy there going forward.

Gretzinger had a really strong game for Pomona on Saturday.  Not as gifted a runner as Noble, obviously, but I think he's a better passer.  If Gretzinger gives them a chance to be a respectable offense without relying on gadgets and running the QB 25 times per game, I think the Sagehens will be fine.  Notable that Q. Wimmer was a DNP Saturday and Pomona was able to come back and get that win with their best offensive piece out of the lineup.

I think it is difficult to judge the strength of George Fox this early in the season.   They were 8-2 last year.  They still have a very good defense.  Beat Pacific 14-9 the week before.

Poets going undefeated this year!
Glad we got rid of Oubre but not looking good at reestablishing a program..

Chapman was beating up Pacific before lightning, so?

The QB is pretty good and I am happy for him, but I can not believe the BS that Lugo is spewing about this years team as compared to his other teams regarding experience?  Last years team was loaded with senior starters?  My boy always said Lugo was full of crap, and now I understand.
