For the last Five seasons or so CLU has scheduled easier non-conference games, and have won early--but losing during conference play.  This year they play Central in their first game.  I do not expect them to win, but perhaps it will better prepare the team for SCIAC play?  We will see, but I don't see them winning more than 3 games this season.

I always liked Mike Maynard's approach of having one tough game in the pre season, NC Central, LF, MHB, even Trinity as they were coming up. If you win it really helps your Wild Card chances if you finish second in league, or if you win you have a chance of a home game in the playoffs. Plus we all know most of the time the road goes thru LF or Texas, so play them and get better.

Every now and again we win one of those big games, its fun hearing the excuses from their fans.

Are most of the SCIAC schools scrimmaging this weekend? Does anybody have any info on who they are scrimmaging against? I know Chapman plays Golden West College every year and Cal Lu usually plays against Moorpark.

UR has not scrimmage another school in a long time, 15 to 20 years ago...LV, CMS, PP, Whittier and Oxy...have not heard of any scrimmages lately. In recent times only Chapman and CLU. Its funny when you talk to Chapman or Golden West kids as to who did better, both side tell me they did...every year. GW is a lot bigger than Chapman, for sure.

Some guys that played 20 years ago might shed some light. I have been hit in the head to much.

We scrimmaged multiple JC's when I was there, jamboree style. West LA, Mt. San Jacinto, and few others over the years. Always at Redlands too.

RB, have you heard why Maynard stopped doing the scrimmages? I know LV used to do the same ...about 20 years ago too.

No, don't know why they stopped. I can say they were very chippy scrimmages though. Plenty of cheap shots and fights breaking out. It was the 90's though and just a different era of football where that was more normalized.

Week 1 score predictions are below.

Chicago 13 @ CMS 28 - Going to be a hot one even with a 10 AM kickoff... CMS with home field advantage will be huge.

La Verne 17 @ Willamette 21 - Willamette will be improved with a new Head Coach

Carleton 14 @ Pomona 35 - Well coached Pomona team and travel for Carleton will make it tuff for Carleton to win

Pacific 17 @ Chapman 38 - Interested to see how Chapman will come out and play with the game cancelation last year @ Pacific... Chapman will have too much fire power for Pacific to compete.

George Fox 14 @ Redlands 42 - Redlands will get off to a fast start with a healthy QB. Interested to see some new pieces for Redlands this year on both sides of the ball.

I'll have to disagree. While they're certainly not accustomed to cross-country travel, I believe Carleton gets into town today, which may help mitigate travel effects. Secondly, this Carleton team is also very well coached and they return nearly every starter from last year's team that beat P-P 45-24. I think the Knights win by multiple scores.

Really have enjoyed this series, I'm glad both schools get to play a like-minded peer institution across the country. I hope it continues, sort of like a D3 version of USC-Notre Dame.

Excessive heat wave for the next few days in SoCal. It's going to be uncomfortable hot on that field Saturday.

Minnesota is not cold in the summer -- it's hot and humid. The 96 degree temp and 40% humidity predicted for Saturday will certainly have an effect, but it won't have an outsized additional effect on Carleton. It should affect both teams.

Both games in Claremont have adjusted start times to beat the heat.

C-M-S and Chicago will go at 10 am PDT while Carleton and P-P will go at 5 pm PDT.

I presume Chicago's travel schedule makes playing later not an option, so earlier it is. If Carleton could start later, I would have thought they would go at 7 pm and get out of the sun almost entirely, but 5 pm will provide some relief (that warmup period is going to be rough though).

For sure, that's not lost on me. High of 107 today and 103 Saturday. 5pm start helps, but will still be a scorcher.

I am hearing the UR/GF game  has been moved to Claremont tomorrow at 10 am, due to the fires and air quality. Word is Jeff Martinez buying GF dinner tonight to not leave town.
