I you don't want to give money, you can at least give emotional support.  Otherwise nobody will want to go there at all.

No business playing college football is a huge insult. Remember how many teams are even less successful than Redlands? There's lots of offensive lines out there.

It's not a participation trophy sport at Redlands, Pat. Maybe at some other schools, but not Redlands. There is a standard and tradition established by the hard work of Mike Maynard, and anything less than that is unacceptable.

Cool. None of that means "more than half of those guys have no business playing college football."

Perhaps you meant to say "no business playing football at Redlands."

Pat, in defense of RBF...I have been watching UR games since the late 90's....our O line play continues to decline.

I agree with RBF, expand your area your recruiting base, and move some nastier D linemen to the O line.

I'm not disputing this point, olddog. What I actually wrote was different.

Pat, have you watched Redlands offensive line specifically this last season or two?

No, but I know there are many worse teams and I'm sure many worse offensive lines. Have you watched a lot of the bottom 25 teams play? There's lots of really bad offensive line so again, going to say that the statement that "more than half of those guys have no business playing college football," is unsupported by reality. There is lots of college football worse than Redlands.

Well, I will say this. When I watch an offensive lineman struggle to get out of their stance, I'm more than a little justified to say they should not be playing college football.

olddog

Its a tough issue, a lot it boils down to recruiting and what kids the school can get in. Its so expensive if you are an upper middle class family aid will be limited, its just out of reach. Orange County kids seem to show up less and less on the roster.

Pat, as you know the SCIAC had Occidental and currently has La Verne, so the Redlands backers know how bad teams and Offensive lines are, since they play them yearly--and in La Verne's case, the only two wins this year.  I know you have to support the D3 athletes, but some teams and players do not belong playing.  I know that great programs like St. John's allows anybody willing to try to join the team and practice, so?

olddog

Now we have opened a can of worms. Lets face it, programs like UR and others are asking their HC to  bring in freshman football players to get their male enrollment up.

Most these D3 schools have their A list kids (15 to 25 they are going really hard to get), usually ones that are being recruited by D2, NAIA, better D3 programs etc...This is a kid who is missing one component from his tool box to make him D1...usually size or speed.
then their B (possible player in a few years)  ...and then C list, which is just bodies.

Looked at tuition and room and board at UR.  81K all in.  If a kid gets half in scholarships, they still have to pay 40K a year.  How many families can afford that, let alone qualify for 40K a year in loans.  Higher Ed finances are a disaster for middle class families.  I can afford to pay that money to send my kids to UR, that price tag is not worth it.  Linfield, St John's, the Texas powers, Mt Union, North Central are all about 2/3 to half that price.  If Maynard was in charge, then it might be worth it.

Still no OC hire at Redlands yet. I assume the position has been turned down a few times if it's taking this long.
