This is a WIN, WIN, WIN, for all.

Turbin gets a trip home.
The Hula Bowl sells tickets to the local guy's friends and family.
The SCIAC and d3 get great exposure.

Turbin already was home, so no free trip. :)

Another savings for the Hula Bowl.

They're ahead after selling a couple of tickets.

One thing that perturbs me is that if Maynard leaves, who is the premier coach in the SCIAC?  People can argue for Oxy, but they have yet to do it over a prolonged time.  The NWC had Frosty and now Locey, the obvious ones are Gags and Kehres from the nation.  in our football world where would happen to that distinction?  Long Live the Bulldogs!

There seems to be a popular misconception around here that Oxy just came up out of nowhere in the last few years.  Since 1983, they have had 8 SCIAC championships and 1 year were co-champs (for 9 SCIAC titles).  In that same period, Redlands has 9 SCIAC titles.  Coach Widolff has been winning at Oxy for a long time now, including some very dominating years in the 1980s (titles in 83, 84, 85, 87, 88, 89).

RFB

Widolff has been ay Oxy for twenty four seasons compared to eighteen for Maynard at Redlands. Both are great coaches but I would like to think that Redlands would have won a SCIAC title or two if Maynard was on equal footing.

I have to agree, great post XFactor!
Oxy Dominated in the 80's
Redlands Dominated in the 90's
and in the new century, it's all tied up 3-3
Redlands 2000, 2002, 2003
Oxy 2001, 2004, 2005
2006???

Eye of da TIGER

Hmmmm 2006................ Redlands or Oxy? My vote is for Oxy!!!! Go Tigers!!! 3-peat in '06
4 is the smallest composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 2. 4 is the smallest squared prime. 4 is the only number in the English language for which the number of letters in its name is equal to the number itself. 4 is also the number of titles in a row the tigers will have in '07!! Go Oxy

D O.C.

What's that make California Lutheran University, a spoiler?
Are they not the only SCIAC team (now) to beat LINFIELD?

OXY Oswald

Linfield isn't the only team out there that needs to beaten by the SCIAC playoff hopefuls, this year proved that.

And let's not call Cal Lu the spoiler, how about the dark horse.

Equal footing?  Do you mean if Maynard had started in '82 when Widolff began at Occidental?

I don't see the relevance of that, perhaps some better competition for the Tigers SCIAC three-peats?  I'll tell you what lets look at the tally when Maynard reaches his 24th year at Redlands -  :o wait a second, I forgot he's shopping around right now.

Yo Dens,

who cares if Cal Lu beat Linfield, what they need to worry about is winning the SCIAC!!! Its closing in on 10 years since the Kingsmen have won the SCIAC crown.  While they have had great success recently in the SCIAC, remember second place is the first loser.  While going 8-1 and 6-3 is fun, i bet if you asked any of the Cal Lu players, finishing in second place over and over again has left a bitter taste in their mouth.  I remember my soph year when we finished 7-2 and 2nd in the SCIAC with two very close loses to Pomona and Redlands......... we were pissed.  While 7-2 was a great improvement from 5-4, our goal was not 2nd place.  I wouldnt call Cal Lu the spoiler, they are a good team, they just need to show up and play in big games!!!!  You cant have meltdowns in big games if you want that SCIAC Championship!!

Now if you want to call someone a spoiler for the 2006 season I'm gonna go with Whittier.  While a 2-7 record is not much to write home about in '05, they lost games on average by only 7 pts!!  All we have heard from Whittier in the past couple of years is how they have a young team.  Well im sure they are all grown up now, so look for them to be your possible spoiler in '06.

Oxy Oswald,

Yes, I meant equal footing in Maynard having coached equal number of years as Widolff. Widolff has had six more years to coach in the SCIAC and Maynard has as many titles as he does in less time. And I would not be crowning a three-peat for Oxy just yet, it is a very hard thing to do. Maynard is still the head coach last time I checked.

Coaching news on a very different front - the new head coach of the Detroit Lions is a Cal Lu alum:

Here's hoping things go well for him in the Motor City, it's been a long time since the Lions had anything going in the way of long term success.

Speaking of coaching changes -

Has anyone heard any news at all about Maynard and the two jobs that he was in contention for?

I think both of them had said decisions would be made within a couple of weeks and that would be around now.
