D O.C.

May I start this a year early?....what is Andy Collin's 40 time?

OXY Oswald

The Tigers haven't tested yet this Spring.  As a matter of fact, they started spring ball this morning before the rain came into the Rock.

From what I've seen Oxy is going to be a much stronger/faster team this year, and we've had a lot of good recruits come through our campus.  Hopefully they get some financial aid this year.

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Would USD want to spend the money? They are a non scholorship 1-AA team. The reason they are the only school left from the WCC that still plays football is the non-scholorship status. Santa Clara many years ago and St. Mary's recently dropped football because of the cost. UC Davis is very much a scholorship program.

Sorry I haven't been around all that much to reply - I disagree with your comment regarding UC-Davis -

When Davis was a D2 school, they participated much of the time in the old NCAC which was a non-scholar ship conference for football. Supposedly Davis would award financial aid based on need, just like D3 does.

I did a little research and for the 2005 season, while transitioning to D1, Davis was considered a D-1AA Mid-Major School. By definition, Mid-Majors offer no or limited athletic scholarships. U-San Diego is a Mid-Major as well.

The date that USD had played Menlo last year is now being filled with a conference team as they are now playing a round robin. The only "smaller" school that USD plays in 2006 is Azusa Pacific..

All I can go is what is reported back by a couple of former students. One (he's also the son of a colleague) is on a full ride football scholorship at UC Davis. His comments concerning scholorships and future plans are what drove my comments concerning the future of UC Davis football.

Another student recieved a full ride to St. Mary's and then they dropped the program. Being so late in the recruiting game, scholorships were not available so he chose USD. He red shirted his freshman year there and then came back to our JC because USD was too expensive, no football scholorships. Looks like Fresno State or San Jose State for him now.

With Davis in transition, it wouldn't surprise me if they do offer football scholarships in the future.

I think that now there may be terminology problems. I know that for the longest time for Menlo, even when they were a 2-yr college, there were always people (including some students) saying that there were athletes on football scholarships. The thing was Menlo gave financial aid based on need and/or merit. But if you had a football player who was on a full ride based on need, some people thought that was an athletic scholarship. I think it is like people outside of D3 schools saying that D3's have athletes sign letters of intent. People's perceptions don't always match.

I may be wrong too - who knows - but based on what the NCAA says regarding mid-major 1AA's, Davis and San Diego are grouped together.

UC Davis offers football scholarships now. I just talked with the father of the UC Davis player (he is also our head coach and a Davis football alum himself) and he assured me that it is a full athletic scholarship. UC Davis hopes to be at the 1AA max of 66 full scholarships by the end of the transition period. They have around 45 now.

I also talked with the A.D. at St. Mary's a while back. The reason they dropped football is that they couldn't offer the scholarships the other schools in the league offer and therefore be competitive. They also didn't want to go the Pioneer League (1AA non scolorship) route like USD.

My son was recruited by Davis this year.  They definitely offer athletic scholarships, though many are partial scholarships so that they can spread them further.

Huge pickup for Chapman in hiring Bob Owens. He got things done when he was at Whittier. He is also well connected with many Los Angeles Junior College programs. Look for Chapman to be much improved within the next few years, especially if he gets the same caliber of athlete's he had at Whittier.

When I saw the headline on the front page of D#fooftball.com, I thought I was in a time warp - after all, Ken Visser who was Chapman's first coach when they started football again was from Whittier - wonder if there was some kind of connection -? (probably not - Chapman just got the best coach who fit with their program)

It would be nice to see Chapman bring it up a level.....

Gray Fox

Interesting comments about his ties to the SCIAC..   Is this a step to joining?

Gray Fox -

I don't think so -

Remember Coach Visser came to Chapman from Whittier - He was at Whittier for 3-4 years then Chapman for 12 - I really don't think they are any closer to playing in the SCIAC now than when they resurrected football.

Longtooth

CC is in the league.  When will they start to play the schedule in league, does anyone know?

rbaikie

Longtooth -

wrong league

Colorado College has joined the SCAC, not the SCIAC

Gray Fox

I wonder who the SCIAC teams will play to replace Colorado College.
