They recently had a similar discussion on the Michigan League board.  It wasn't JVs, but many other local options.

I think that with the overcrowing of the UC school system, the small private schools are becoming a good option for the Calif kids.......the academic requirements to get into a UC school as a student are absurd anymore.

With financial aid available, the schools like Redlands, etc are a great alternative.

Besides, I may be confused but California doesn't have a true all state team like other states.  Correct me if I'm wrong about that.

The only source I'm aware of that puts together an all-state team in CA is CalHiSports.com.  They do an all-state team for players regardless of school size but then also do all-state teams for medium and small schools.  Officially, CA is divided into ten sections each of which contains several leagues (except for SF and Oakland, where the section consists of a single league).  (See http://www.cifstate.org/.)  The leagues have official all-leage teams but so far as I know none of the sections have any sort of official all-section teams.  Some of the papers will do all-area teams, and NorCalPreps.com does teams for northern California, but CA is just too large for any of the papers to try to put together an all-state team.

rockcat

tm,

thanks for the clarification.  I knew about the division breakdown but didn't know for sure if there was an all-state team named by anybody.  I didn't think there was.

Dawgs,

Just worry about having Chris Saras as Redlands starting QB. If the incoming frosh beats him out to command the field, great. But saras is a good player. He did his best to keep redlands in the game against Oxy and for the rest of their games.

Btw---Although you might point out ( as "you did") that Oxy doesn't have a good schedule like Redlands, i hope that when you go to the Oxy-Redlands game you'll have a whole different prespective on how good Oxy really. Oh, you will be surprised.

I did say that Oxy did not play as tough a schedule as Redlands....I didnt say one team is better than the other becasue, I really dont know.....

Bur realistically, the preseason is only two games.......I dont know what difference it makes if the regular season schedule is all that counts for making the playoffs.......I guess if you are on the bubbble, two wins might be better than a split or two losses.  I dont know if they consider strength of schedule or not. 8)

And as to the starting Qb, I really dont care...I just threw the info on the forsh out to stir up some conversation.   But, I think he will surprise alot of people.........I cant compare him to Saras because, I have never seen him play and I dont know how the frosh will adapt.

Yes its a fact that Redlands does have a stronger out of conference schedule than Oxy.  I think the better preseason competition does in fact help a team out, especially when they reach the playoffs and are forced to play tougher competition.  But the fact remains that it doesnt matter who you played in the preseason and how good they were if you dont get it done in the SCIAC!!! Oxy is not dodging anyone, matter a fact I believe this is the last year that they will play Colorado College so it should be very interesting to see who they pick up to replace them. As a former player, i know for a fact that the guys on the team would rather play Trinity or Willamette rather than playing Lewis and Clark and Colorado College but we dont have a say in that.  It is what it is, those games end up being great games to get younger players experience. This year those are the two first games that Oxy will play, so they will be instrumental in giving new players a chance to catch up to the speed of college football.  After that hopefully its clear sailing through the SCIAC, again!!! ;D
4 is the smallest composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 2. 4 is the smallest squared prime. 4 is the only number in the English language for which the number of letters in its name is equal to the number itself. 4 is also the number of titles in a row the tigers will have in '07!! SCIAC predictions.....
1. Oxy
2. Redlands
3. Cal LU
4. Matters
5. Matters
6. Matters
7. Matters

Well because the conversations that dawgs keeps bringing up are ones that we have been over only about a million times. I want to continue with what rockcat brought up and that is SCIAC predictions.

1. Oxy (of course)
2. Cal Lu
3. Redlands
4. Pomona
    La Verne
6. Toss up
7. Toss up

Oxy will be back for their third SCIAC Championship.  Sorry Redlands fans ... I feel that Cal Lu has been really stepping it up a notch the last couple of years and with their new facility I feel that they will be giving the SCIAC a run for thier money, while Pomona and La Verne have a good chance of turning some heads.  They have been tugging at the ropes to the top for the last two years.  What about everyone else?
O.C. RAH!

From everthing I read, I think Oxy has to be the favorite.  I think that there are 3 reshman at Redlands, and I wont name them yet, that are going to be immediate impact players.  Wheter or not they can make a big enough impact to dethrone Oxy remains to be seen.

Living in Thousand Oaks,  I am familiar with CLU, some of the kids that they recruited last year were not good enough to start for some of the local high school teams. They may had had a better recruiting year this year, I havent seen their list yet.

I think that the Redlands -Oxy game will decide the league title......

GO Dawgs.......Go Deep

dgd has posted 59 times since June 12th and he has yet to see his first Redlands game.  I can't wait to see what happens when the season starts.  He might reach All-American status by week 2..especially if Redlands opens with a win against Whitworth.  I love it!  Thanks for making the SCIAC board entertaining in the offseason...

hey hey new to the board here to post represting La Verne.  I've been reading the board and noticed that Redlands and Oxy dominate the board, but here to represent La Verne.

A couple people asked about an outlook for other schools, so here is kinda what I know of the La Verne situation:

There will be a lot of new faces on the field in 2006.  The majority of the starters from 2005 have graduated creating voids to be filled.

Brian Guerrero (1st team All-SCIAC in 2004) is not returning for his senior season at quarterback due to injury.  The quarterback position hasn't been solidified as of yet.  At wideout there two of the top receivers have graduated, but the underclassmen receivers should make moves. The O-Line graduated 4 starters so there will be new faces, word is mostly JC transfers on the O-Line.

Defensively, the secondary with the exception of a cb will be entirely different as will the defensive line.  Nevertheless, think some quality defensive lineman should be in camp for La Verne.

La Verne should be ready to play in 2006, may suprise someone if taken lightly as they will definitely have the potential to win some games.

About the Redlands quarterback situation,  I know La Verne knocked out the starter last year bringing Saras in and he took the game in his hands.  I think he played at 1-AA Davis (a damn fine program) and I don't see a freshman unless he's Collinsesque coming in and starting over him, Saras knows the offense and has EARNED the position.

As far as the conference goes, I think Oxy is a good team but I think it'll go something like this...
1. Cal Lu
2. Redlands
3. Oxy
4. La Verne
5. Pomona
6. Whittier
7. Claremont

I think we all know that conference will be decided on the field this fall and that predictions are as substantive as a three dollar bill.

Having said that, however, I have to point out that those professionals who study and engage in the world of college football for a living offer this preseason prognositcation on as far as the 2006 national rankings go:

Street & Smith's:  Oxy no. 17 with no other SCIAC schools listed in the top 25.
Lindy's:  Oxy no. 17 with no other SCIAC schools listed in the top 25.

Given that Oxy still has Andy Collins and the quality and number of returning players, including the 8 starters on defense, this seems to make sense.

So I'd have to guess that picking Cal Lu and Redlands over Oxy in the SCIAC at this particular time rests more on dreams and wishes than analysis.  Not to say it can't happen, just don't think it has too much credence at this juncture.

Other notables:

With a new head coach and new QB, our good friends at Linfield are ranked at 8 by Lindy's and 10 by Street & Smith's.  No other NWC teams listed in the top 25 at this point.

Other ranked western region teams are UW-Whitewater (2/Lindy's, 3 S&S), St. John's (4/Lindy's, 5 S&S), Central (12 Lindy's, 18 S&S), Concordia-Moorhead (22 Lindy's), Monmouth (22 S&S)

The top 25s are posted at:  http://bridgewaterfootball.com/d3rankings.html and there is a discussion on the "General Football" boards.

The SCIAC champion gets an automatic bid.  The out of conference wins (there are three out of conference games for SCIAC teams) record is important for the second place team if it wants to get a bid (can't remember if this counts is a "pool B" or "pool C" . . . I'm not too well versed on the DIII selection process) . . . nevertheless, the W/L out of conference and the qualities of those wins certainly will weigh on the selectors minds as the brackets are formed.  Cal Lu was in the hunt for a bid last year.

Redlands plays Whitworth, Trinity and Chapman out of conference.  Redlands' 2006 season preview is posted at http://www.redlands.edu/x27419.xml.  Returning a lot of seniors including 8 starters on both O and D.  The Bulldogs will be tough.  Also note the QB discussion in the piece.

Oxy plays Colorado College, Lewis & Clark, and Chapman out of conference.

Cal Lu's schedule isn't posted (that I could find) but last year they played Menlo, Chapman and Pacific Lutheran out of conference.
