If you look at the d3football home page you'll find the SCIAC record in the NCAA DIII football playoffs since automatic bids were instituted.  You'll note that the SCIAC record is 2-4.

Who earned the wins for the SCIAC you ask?  Oxy, thank you very much.

As for who will dominate the SCIAC . . . we've already discussed the pointlessness of this discussion, but if it must be had, logic shows Oxy is the only logical favorite.  Look at the fact that the quarterback who has led them to two conference championships, two playoff victories and is the best athlete on the field, not to mention the SCIAC Offensive Player of the year and an all region selection is returning.  Look at the strength of the returning defense.  Oxy has to be favored in any rational, non-fan driven evaluation.

Look at the polls, including the SW poll that puts the Tigers 11th.  That suggests that the argument that Oxy has to be favored AT THIS POINT is valid.  Anything else is simply fan hyperbole.  And that is fine, but don't try to disguise it as neutral analysis so much as it is cheerleading.  The difference being between informed opinion and blind faith.

Both are fine, just don't confuse them.

As for what will happen in the SCIAC this year . . . we'll find out when the boys take the field.  Frankly, I thought Redlands was a much better team than Cal Lu last year, I was stunned when the Bulldogs lost to the Kingsmen . . . I'd have to guess that it was a mental letdown by the 'Dogs following their hard fought loss to Oxy.  Redlands certainly played Oxy a lot tougher than Cal Lu did last year.

But . . . in addition to dropping that game to Oxy, Redlands lost to Whitworth and Trinity at the outset of the season.  Cal Lu's defeat of the 'Dogs set it up for consideration in the playoffs . . . frankly, I think that if Redlands had beaten Cal Lu that even with the losses to Oxy, Whitworth and Trinity, that it would have had a better shot at a playoff invite than the Kingsment did.  Am I right?  Who knows and who cares, just my gut and not an analysis based on the selection criteria (which I've learned can be found on the d3football home page under FAQs).

I think Redlands will be tough this year.  Don't have much of a feel for Cal Lu, I think that they played a little over their heads last year . . . but that's just me . . . maybe the drubbing they took from Oxy was a fluke . . . or maybe Oxy just didn't play up to its potential against Redlands . . .

The key, as always, will be consistency, taking it one game at a time . . . and seeing if Oxy can get a good O line in place . . . that, I think, will be the key to how far Oxy can take it this year.

Io Triumphe baby.

QuoteThis board has me battered and bruised. Sad

Have some real fun and go check out the East Region, Liberty League board. They get a couple of teams into the playoff brackets. Most dare not post there

downtown...thanks, but my beef isn't a Redlands vs Oxy thing, it's that it seems some, not all, of the Oxy posters simply can't tolerate an opinion that they don't agree with or like.  Boards are for discussion, having some fun bantering back and forth and good natured smack  talking.  Some posters seem to think that the board is for posting about how great their favorite team is and if someone doesn't agree, well................and tooth I did say that Oxy probably had to be the favorite.

I cant wait for the season to start....then the fun will really begin......and by the way, I hate the Raiders. ;D

DGD,

You're not getting blasted . . . just educated.   8)

Blasted is more like what happened to an obnoxious Oxy poster last year.  He's history now and made your karma deficit look awfully mild.

Tooth,

Thanks for the education...is it free?....did I get a schollie?  Do I get the education without any consideration of athletics?

As to the karma stuff...you can smite all you want....doesnt matter.....what will matter is when a young freshman qb from Redlands plays against Oxy this year.......see ya at the game????????? ;D

Man I hope he doesnt go to Louisville, because if he doesnt......Oxy will have its hands full....thats my prediction and opinion.......do with it all you want.....lets have some fun. ;)

4 is the smallest composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 2. 4 is the smallest squared prime. 4 is the only number in the English language for which the number of letters in its name is equal to the number itself. 4 is also the number of titles in a row the tigers will have in '07!! Go Oxy

DGD:

1.  I don't have power to give or take karma (yet) . . . the smiting you suffer does not come from me;

2.  Here's what Redlands has published about quarterbacks in the upcoming 2006 season:

In the all-important quarterback position, Redlands looks to three top contenders, including returning starter senior Chris Saras (Rocklin, CA) who looks forward to his final campaign with the Bulldogs.  In 2005, he stepped in mid-season to tally a solid .526 completion percentage on 102-for-194 passing for 1,325 yards and nine touchdowns.  Junior Bryan Beaver (Brentwood, CA) and sophomore Dan Selway (Villa Park, CA) should also challenge him for playing opportunities.  Dark horses for the job include wily veteran senior Brian Ziska (Arcadia, CA) as well as the explosive sophomore Elias Allen (Hilo, HI).

And yup, I'm planning on bein' at the Oxy v. Redlands game . . . you can find me by looking for the guy wearing orange and black, yelling for Oxy.

Nice highlight reel . . . why does the word "ouch" keep coming to mind?

Is there a video of the entire game available online?

Ouch is not the only thing that comes to mind to me by watching that highlight reel!  Even though we lost

Okay obviously I don't have the edit button either (or the ability to be a karma god) ... what I was trying to say is - even though that Linfield handed us an @$$ whooping that I will never forget ... even in my old age, but even thought it might have no seemed like it I can tell you that oxy was trying.

DGD,
It might look like people do not have the ability to accept other peoples opinions, but we do.  What most Oxy fans are trying to say is that oxy is on top right now and until they can prove their status when the season start oxy will be number 1 right now.  That might change when the season starts.  Just as you have the right to your opinion ... you have to understand people have the right to disagree
As for your education or knowledge of the SCIAC, I would have top agree that your thoughts might be a little one sided being that you have not been around long enough to understand the SCIAC.  Just reading old game summaries and previews and rosters does not give you the history that it has.  I am not trying to sit here and bash you at all so please do not take it that way.  I just think that you need to see each team play so you can see the quality of athletics in the SCIAC.

I personally cannot wait until kickoff because as I have said before I think this is going to be a quality season for the SCIAC all around.  I love the banter that is going on across the board, but lets have a moment of silence for our beloved friend Liger ...  ::)

downtown.......wow.....I only had to watch half the film to see what a total (you know what) whoppin Linfield put on Oxy.........that was sad.......Where can I find the Redlands highlites...or are they low lights???? :)

el Tigre......I dont have a problem with you having an opinion....I respect what you have to say because you obvioulsy know more than I do about the SCIAC.  But respect for an opinion has to go both ways........I dont think mine is so outrageous that one might say that I am crazy.  I agree that not watching the games for years like you have means I am less informed.  However, if the Linfield -Oxy film is any indication of the difference in quality of play, the entire SCIAC in trouble.

As to the season preview, Redlands doesnt even know if the kid is coming yet from what I understand from the dad so obviously, they would look really silly to hearld him and then he goes to Louisville.  I discovered that Louisville was at the Shrine game that the kid played in...I don't dont if it was to talk to him or if they were recruiting another player.

I would think he has to make his mind up soon.  Hopefully, we will see some notification that he will be a Bulldog. ;D

Unfortunately for the SCIAC it has been that way for a while.  As posted earlier the entire conference has only won two games since the automatic bid era.  Oxy did a good job of earning some respect for the conference a couple of years ago but a team needs to get through the west for everyone to take notice.

Follow DIII football long enough and you'll find that there is quite a talent gap between the top handful of teams in any year and the everyone else, even the rest of the top 25.  I've seen St. John's, Mount Union, Mary Hardin Baylor and a number of Linfield games in person the last four or five years and it is clear that their long term success is due in large part to superior talent (the other factor being excellent coaching).

OOOH yeah those highlights are a little tough to watch!!!

DGD said "However, if the Linfield -Oxy film is any indication of the difference in quality of play, the entire SCIAC in trouble."

What you must understand is the Linfield team that Oxy ran into the last couple of years was definitely a special team!! With a QB who is now in the NFL and a WR in Casey Allen, (6'3'' 225), which made him bigger than anyone on our defense, and by the way he was faster, we were a little over matched!!! Not to mention Allen was covered by a freshman DB who was about 5'9" 165!!! The SCIAC is a conference that is definitely on the rise, and if all the programs continue to improve, not just Oxy, Cal Lu and Redlands, the improved competition within the SCIAC will prepare the Champion for the playoffs.  Whoever that champion may be.... ;)
