Not a bad video.  Was that you playing QB in the black and white footage? ;)

One mistake though...they spelled Gagliardi, Galiardi.  Someone might want to fix that before next year.  Fortunately not many high school recruits know who that is.

Good one, thank God I am not that old. I didn't pick up on the Gagliardi typo. They should definitely fix that mistake. I would have preferred "Hells Bells" for the music but I guess that would not have worked for today's 18 year old and his parents.

Close enough.  The difference is that it isn't purely based on football.  Things like community service which are supposed to make the DIII experience unique are emphasized in the Gagliardi Award.  There's a seperate award called the Melberger that may be a better comparison to the Heisman.  I don't think it is as prestigious as the Gagliardi though.

By the way, don't ever say I haven't thrown some positive karma your way!

OxyCollins would almost appear to be a running back at the Qb position. However, he can wing it. I stated the proposition once and lived so again I say the last two years he could have been inserted into LINFIELD'S lineup and the WILDCATS would have been very successful.

Tom Brady

DGD-  You are from Thousand Oaks and are not a CLU supporter??!!  Doesnt surprise me, not many local residents are.
The new facilities are looking, well, just like they did a few months ago- No football field, no bleachers on the baseball field, dusty, but there is a big hole in the ground where the pool will be going.  Not too sure when the gym is opening but I assume it will be soon.  Looking forward to watching some football this year, but it looks to me like I might not be around for the OXY game.  Damn people getting married.

I went to a few basketball games at CLU because years ago I played with a few of their guys in a league.  It sure was a lousy gym, I hear the new one is great.  I only became interested in Redlands because of my daughter.

Rockcat, thanks for the feel good!  When I am able, I will return the favor.

The two awards sound like they are inspired by the true meaning of a combination of athletic competiton and higher education.  It sounds like d3 football is not big business like d1 sports and yet, has all the intensity and rivalries of d1.  The term, student athlete, isnt an oxy-moron in d3.  No pun intended! ;D

What's the delay in Cal Lu's field projects from?

Tom Brady

I am guessing the delay is simply normal construction delays.  It looks like the gym is pretty much done (cant wait to see the inside).  Not too sure why the other fields are either not finished or not there.  No matter what the cause is, thank goodness they will be out of the old gym.  I hope they do the rest of the campus a favor and blow that thing up.  I would suggest all the fans that come to CLU to watch a football game show up a little early and check out the new stuff.

OXY Oswald

Brady,

Is the new football stadium still expected to be completed before the season??

I sure would like to see the new facilities
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Tom Brady

Oswald-  I dont even see a football field out there.  I know they used the baseball field this year with temporary bleachers (at least I pray they were temporary) and that is the only facility I have seen that is open.  I am guessing they will be playing in the same stadium they have been.  Not too sure when all the other stuff will be done.
Here is a good picture of the new Gym (the one on top, not the boring video)

That's true, at least outside of Minnesota.  St. John's doesn't recruit outside the state, so if you're on the west coast you have to find John as he's not looking for you (Coach Gagliardi doesn't use "Coach"; players call him by his first name). And given what St. John's has done with just Minnesota kids, think what he might do if he recruited out of state.   Of course, with his coming induction into the College Football Hall of Fame next month maybe he'll become a little better known.

Austin Murphy, a writer at Sports Illustrated, spent a semester living at St. John's in 1999 and wrote a book about it called The Sweet Season.  It's a good read and a nice insight into D3 football.

While it is spelled Gagliardi, it is pronounced as "Galiardi" - in Italian - "gli" is pronouced as "lee".

I'm not real familiar with Cal Lu.  I checked out there website and the progress of their new facilities.  What has led them to upgrade all of those at the same time?  Where they given a large gift?  Are they trying to grow the size of the university?  One way of increasing enrollment is creating the ability to recruit more athletes.  New fields and a new gym would help.  Any Cal Lu apologists out there to explain?

Sabretooth Tiger

Rockcat,

As for why all at once . . . this may well have to do with the planning process.  Getting through the city with design and construction approval can be arduous.  If it is not all approved through a long term master plan, then it makes sense to do a lot of it all at once.  It is much more efficient and the institution is much more likely to get approval.  Also much more efficient (cost efficient) to do a lot of the work at one time.
