Seems a little boosterish to me.

Agreed, I wondered if it was one of our Redlands friends under a different poster name . . . figured it was nonetheless worth sharing.

Which Redlands friend could you be talking about? ;)

Tuxguy

U. of Redlands made him the equivalent of a full offer ???
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

That's one of the parts I found "interesting."  But, if websites are to be believed, he carried a 3.5 gpa and was considering some Ivy League schools . . . so he's the kind of guy Redlands would try to buy.

D O.C.

Sounds like a good deal for Redlands.

Now if they will just do the courtesy of introducing the lad to their sister school up north they will have earned his eternal gratitude.

About the 'full offer' term, I thought that d3 schools could not offer athletic scholarships but gave schollies on need, academics and other considerations....

That board that you posted sounds like a local one for SFV area......they all seem to know each other.

I saw his name in the Daily News and found this article on Calhisports
http://calhisports.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=559544

Crespi played in DX the last 5 years and won the CIF title the last two years.  They originally played in the Mission league with Notre Dame and others but got bumped down because they did not have enough kids to field 3 teams, fros, jv and varsity.  This happened because many outstanding players fled the program due to very poor coaching.  My son was one of them. Of those kid at least 5 are playing D1 football now or recently played.  I watched the debacle....it was awful......

New coaching came in and with them some good players, 3 years later 2 titles.  They are moving back up to Div 1 next year.  I believe they have 2 or 3 kids playing at Redlands next year.

and tooth....I am a fan of his, when you watch him play, you will know why....and he is the only thing I am familiar with right now in d3 football...I had to find something to spark some debate :D.........hopefully that will change soon. ;D

dgd, did you ever see Russell White play at Crespi?  He was electric.

As for your reference a few pages back to Tom Clements, you must be a Domer.  No one else would ever think of him.

That's right.  The person who posted the "full offer" statement doesn't know what they are talking about.  His merit scholarship may equal the cost of tuition but it can't be based on athletic ability.  Redlands has a reputation for giving out significant merit scholarship to kids that don't get anything at highly competative colleges.  That is quite a help for coaches in recruiting because, though they aren't directly involved in giving out the awards it is a much easier sell when Redlands is $20,000+ less than competing DIII colleges.  Basically what that shows is that each college has their own philosophy toward financial aid that is determined by a number of factors.

I saw Russel play twice in high school...all I can say is he was the best hs football player I ever saw.  He played with my nephew for one year.  I met him a couple times and he is simply put......a great guy.

Tom Clements is a good friend....we go back to grade school. He was a great qb at ND.  Loved the 'Bama game!   He is now the QB coach for Green Bay.  I talked with him over the weekend.  I asked him how the heck do you coach Bret Farve? ;D ;D  He said, you dont!

I went back and reread the post on the full offer.  What the guy said was , they made him the EQUIVILENT OF, a full offer.  That is a pretty vague term and can mean alot of different things without a full explanation from the author.

Wow tooth,  you seem like a pretty nice guy, those are pretty harsh words about Redlands.  I dont think BUY is the right word.  Remember, you are reading a post from a high school message board.  Who knows what was meant and whether the post is anywhere near accurate. Tell me one parent that isnt concerned about paying for a college education, especially at 40 K per year.  I know I am.

From my limited contact with Redlands I get the impression that ACADEMICS  is what the school is marketing.  If the kid had a 3.5 gpa at Crespi and, was being recruited by Ivy League schools, he is no dummy. Maybe that is why he , I hope, chose or might choose, Redlands over Louisville.

There is nothing harsh about what I said at all, and it was not intended as such . . . schools "buy"  students with scholarships all the time. A kid like Wabby w/ a 3.5 and assuming he has good SATs brings up Redland's stats.  Kids at the top of Oxy's pool who get offered good packages based on need and merit may go to Oxy because of the offer,  or choose to go to Pomona w/ a lesser offer because of its higher ranking in national polls.

I know a kid who has the same GPA as Wabby, w/ SATs in the 75th percentile . . . a football player.   He was accepted to Oxy and Redlands.  Redlands offered him a substantial scholarship based on need and merit.  Oxy offered him no money based on need and merit, just some loan packages.  He would have been at the top end of Redland's incoming class and made their numbers look good so he got the offer.

He chose Oxy.  Number one reasion?  Quaity of education/challenge of the academic program.  I know a kid transferring to Oxy from another SCIAC school for the same reason . . . wanting a more rigourous academic program.

I went to a lower tier law school because I got a nearly full scholarship as opposed to a higher tier law school where I would have had to pay full  boat.  My law school wanted me with my very high LSAT . . . the upper tier school didn't care . ..

Nothing harsh .  .  . merely reality . .  .  and while I know RFB will be very annoyed with my saying this, and will vehemently disagree . . . the SCIAC schools are not all equal academically.  Pomona and Claremont are at the top of the heap, with Oxy following closely.  All three are top 50 nationally ranked small liberal arts colleges per US News & World Report.

No other SCIAC school is in the top 250 nationally.

Redlands is a top ranked regional school, per that same publication, as is Whittier.  I believe that Cal Lu and LaVerne trail Redlands and Whittier in those evaluations.

Not making this up, merely stating the facts as I understand them.  Not saying that US News ranking means much . . .  except that  it is the perceived value in the marketplace of the educational product provided.  Not saying Redlands is bad or that any of the schools fail to deliver . . . but if a student wants to go to grad school and have a rigorous undergraduate program, not all of the schools are perceived as equal in the marketplace beyond this discussion forum.

I saw him play against Loyola his senior year.  Incredible talent, though I think the Cubs may have won.

I interviewed him when he was in law school.  One of the partners in our firm was a double Domer and went back to ND Law School each year for recruiting.  He couldn't wait to bring Tom out for interviews.  He was very quiet and reserved in the interview (to be expected).  That Sugar Bowl game against Alabama was one of my favorites.

Colleges "buy" students all the time.  They offer large academic scholarships to the type of student that the institution feels will add to their student body.  This may mean they are stronger than average students, multicultural students, etc.  Don't take it as a slap in the face DGD.  I worked in admissions at a DIII college for a few years and I saw it happen all the time.

I sure wish Redlands would buy my daughter!!!!!!!  Ouch 40 k is a chunk.   I quess I took the BUY word the wrong way, sorry tooth.  Kids choose schools for many reasons, financial aid is a big reason, sometimes the main reason for some.

Tom is a very reserved guy. He hated practicing law.  He was meant to coach. Sports has always been his life.  Tom will really open up after a few beers with old buddies.

redlands fan, how are you so sure he is going to Redlands?
