DGD,

Let me preface this with "It is very late, and I SKIMMED my earlier post to see what I wrote."

D.R. is Danny Ragsdale, the D3 Gagliardi Trophy winner in 1999.  D.R. had an ego so large, it might rival Allen Iverson.  He was an unbelivably good quarterback, but he had a big head.  My hope is that the guy you like so much could be as talented as that, and more humble.  So you and I DO share the hope that he will be as good as advertised - IF HE ENROLLS.  Please read the original post again before you respond to this one.  Then reread this one.  You will then see that only now am I being condescending to you.  Your knee jerk reaction is the kind of thing that bugs other U.R. posters.  I won't go so far as to say we don't like you, but turn down the unbridled rhetoric.  THis program has a lot of questions to answer before we start talking about going up to Linfield again.  We need to take care of business in the 909 first.

I'm more concerned with a OL Captain that is 3 bills at D3 and only has 24 pancakes over a 2 year period that is being touted as the best offensive player.  I don't think it bodes well if Mark Thom is the best we have returning on that side of the ball.  I'm not trying to rip the kid, because I'm sure he's a good player, but c'mon.  You gotta wonder a little bit.

Now can I please get some karma in here?  I've been gone so long and have earned it after today.  I'm almost going overboard on the objuectivity here - that has to count for something, right?

dawgs...first, check your messages.

I dont think I was touting Redlands or making any predictions.  I just said I would love to see them play Linfield who I guess is really a powerhouse.  Nothing more!  I am a firm believer in the old addage, one game at a time.

As to 24 pancake blocks in 2 years for the OL guy, is that realy so bad?  I dont know what percentage of the time he played, or what percentage of the time Redlands passed but those factors would certainly have an effect on his pancake blocks.  I have never seen him play and therefore cant really comment on his ability.

I talked to a returning Wr the other day who I know and he said that the receiving group is pretty good.  They just need someone to get the ball to them on a more consistent basis.

As to the recruit, he is coming to UR per a newspaper article I posted the other day.

Dawgs57 is just calling out all kinds of Redlands folks like he has a bone to pick with the program.

I call a spade a spade.  The program needs to be better, and there was a time when those kinds of ideas would have been considered to be no big deal.  Now we are emphasizing it?  To me it highlights that the program is in a down cycle.  I think RFB would agree that it's a change that we aren't used to, and don't like.  I want better for the program.  Plain and simple.

Mark Thom is a good player, but thats not the point, the kid works his tail off and all the coaches/players respect him.  Redlands has talent, you don't have to have your best player represented as a captain at all.  I was once a captain at the U of R and it was not because I was one of the top 4 players on the team, I think attitude, work ethic, passion, and other unmeasurables justified my teamates picking me to represent them as a captain. I think its the same with a majority of the teams across the country.

I was a senior when Mark was a freshman, he will be ok, trust me.

Truthfully, the point had little to do with Mark, I probably overstepped by mentioning his name, as I don't know the kid.  The point was what is being emphasized.  The press release could have read along the lines of what you mentinoed - that all of those things represent  "The Bulldog Way, or Mental Toughness and extreme desire, or the love and respect of his teammates etc.  The stat in and of itself does not do a lot of justice in that regard.  All the other attributes you mentioned do - and that would have been more poignant.

I'm realizing that my point can be construed as splitting hairs, but whatever.  I'm sure the kid is everything you mentioned - Maynard would not have a captain that isn't all of those things.  But I think the best player on the team should generally be a captain.  Think of some of the famous teams you know about.  John Elway was ALWAYS team captain of the Broncos - most of the time the best player on a team does embody most of those qualities.  (Here come the T.O. and Allen Iverson and Barry Bonds comments) but you see the point.

Its good to see some Redlands fans on the board and to know that I am not alone!!!!!!

I actually agree with dags57.  The way to rebuild or regroup a program is with intensity, hard work and desire.  I watched the Crespi hs team do it. they went from 1-10 and 0-9 in three years to back to back CIF Chmapionships.  They worked harder than everyone else, thats how you win.  I know I am old school but old school still works!

I dont think the best player has to be the captain, but I do think the team leader must be.

Yea didnt Crespi also get kicked out of the Mission League and moved down to Division X following those 1-10 and 0-9 seasons and before those two championships?  That might of had something to do with it, of course, along with the hard work they put in!
4 is the smallest composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 2. 4 is the smallest squared prime. 4 is the only number in the English language for which the number of letters in its name is equal to the number itself. 4 is also the number of titles in a row the tigers will have in '07!! Yes eye........they did, but other than ND there was little or no difference between the Mission League that they were originally in and the Del Rey League.  But that is not the issue, what  I was speaking of is, as a team, if the team is determined, and if they have the talent and if they put in the  hard work, they will be successful.

By the way, Crespi has moved up to D1...so that should say something about what I am saying.  Those kids wanted success and they worked hard for it, they rebuilt the program with their effort and now athletes are wanting to come to Crespi again.  Dont you think teams like Linfield are built on the same theory?  They work hard, they win and as a result, THEY GET TALENT WANTING TO COME! It is a selp perpetuating cycle.

Regardless,  why would you air that out in here?  If I called anybody involved with Linfield football, past or present, out in here I would hope and expect Wildcat 11 to fly down here and bitch slap me for being stupid.

Oxy posted this article a couple days ago.  It gives a little information on the upcoming season, but mostly highlights the football team making the preseason polls once again and Senior Andy Collins making preseason All-American.
